Ambient/Mellow Drum & Bass...

I know there are a few people that are into the Electronica beats.

I am in absolute love with Dark Jungle.

I also really like Drum N Bass...Mellow beats with deep basslines, But I only know of a few DJ/Producers that produce it.

I know of LTJ Bukem, Doc Scott..That's it, yes I know it's sad.

So I am asking you guys if you know of any Dj/Producers who are making some nice rolling Drum n Bass with that has maybe just a dab of darkness to it..But alot calmer than Jungle.

I wish I could be abit more clear of what I am looking for.

I hope someone out there can name a few that I can look for.

Thanks

Sounds to me what youre looking for is "Illbient"

Is that it.

A really good experimental D&B'er is Spring Heel Jack. I have a couple of his albums & his stuff ranges from mental drillcore to wacked out sample constructed ambient.

Ever heard of Plastikman? He started out with techno (i think) but a few years ago I got a record of his that sounded more D&Besque. Cant for the life of me rmember what its called.

You didnt mention Roni Size, Have you checked him out or is that not what youre looking for?

Ah yes...Roni Size...Fuck, and Goldie. How I forgot those two is beyond me.

But yes, That is exactly what I am looking for...Sounds good from what it says.

I have heard of Plastikman, Can't say that I have heard anything from him though.

I don't know what it is about drum n bass...But it lures me right in everytime. It soothing to the ears.

EDIT:

Hey did you ever hear the track Roni Size did with B-Real from Cypress Hill?

Alot of people didn't like it..But I loved the beat of that track.

Thing about D&B is its been called so many things, try looking for Hardstep, Jungle or techstep. I dont think a alot of the underground stuff made it over there (Canada right?) Ever heard of Jonny L? didnt think so. A few more: Metalheadz, Alex Reece, Dillinja, Ed Rush. When the whole Rave Generation thing was hitting hard over here you could buy 8-pack mixtapes for twelve bars. Now the only place youll find them is in second hand stores.

It looks like youre looking for something more laid back perhaps Trip & Bass or Drum-Hop. Look around for experimental D&B. Good Luck.

I love drum and bass.

I know a few people out in San Francisco that produce D&B. Aye~n, Ivory, Havok, DJ Qbert, Les Femmes Fatales (SUPER hot chick D&B DJs), Metalheadz (pretty dark and heavy), John B (does a lot of 80's remixes)

I cant think of any more at the moment, but ill shoot them over an email and see what they think.

The only Jungle I listen to is the stuff produced over in the U.K. I do also listen to some of the stuff being produced here in Toronto. There is alot of people who embrace Jungle over here...And I am one of them.

Some of my fav DJ/Producers

Aphrodite
Mickey Finn
Bad Company
Ed Rush & Optical
Total Science
Ray Kieth
Dillinja
Kenny Ken
Dom & Roland
Andy C
Dylan
Ram Trilogy
Future Cut
Klute
Grooverider
DJ Rap
DJ Brockie
Usual Suspects
EZ Rollers
Cause 4 Concern
Digital
DJ Hype

I could go on & on...But ya I have heard of the Meatlheadz, Johnny L..Actually I think I may have a Johnny L CD Somewhere.

You would be amazed at some of the mix tapes I have found in the record shops over here in Canada...Old School tapes from parties in Toronto from the early nineties to the present.

One tape that took me forever to get, Was Kenny Ken and Hyper D...It was Hyper D's last performance in Toronto before he passed. It is probably one of the best mix tapes I got.

Just this summer a Blackmarket Records record shop opened up downtown toronto. It was Founded by Nicky Blackmarket...I'm sure you know who he is.

So what exactly do you spin Magpie?

the whole ambient / chill DnB thing could go in so many directions...
I prefer stuff that's more along the lines of Eastern melodies.. the likes of:
Talvin Singh
State of Bengal
Loop Guru

but those can be hardly DnB at all, and more just ethnic drums...

I like twisted stuff alot too, so I'm partial to Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and similar groups that are impossible to find.. but with the drill'n'bass, they create some beautiful soft pieces... Nanou by Aphex Twin is heaven..

on the more traditional side of chill DnB... Pieter K, Psidream, and ooold John B, DJ Spooky..

happy hunting!

I have heard some good tracks by John B...I may just take a trip down to some of the record shops and ask about these guys that you have listed and see if they have anything in stock.
