Copy Protected CD's. One angry consumer
 

Today at lunch I bought the new <B>Iron Maiden</B> CD, "Dance of Death." After work I returned it, let me tell you why.

It seems that EMI Music group has decided to re-encode their CD's in some new format to deter pirates (yarrrr). That's fine, and I am not here to argue the ethics of pirate MP3's, that's been done to death.

The trouble is that this new format means that;
a)Windows Media Player won't play it.
b)Winamp won't play it.
c)Linux/Unix computers won't play it.
d)Realplayer won't play it (not that anyone cares)

But wait! EMI has a genius idea to solve all these problems. They embeded a NEW player that you have to install on your PC to hear the tracks. Here's the crappy part, the new player and/or compression-encoding format makes the music <B>sound like absolute garbage.</B> It was completely unbearable.

In my car it sounded just great, but goddamn it I payed $15 bucks for this CD I should be able play it anywhere.

Here's where it gets really crazy, <B>I could still copy the damn thing.</B> Just for giggles I tried to make a copy from the CD and it worked just fine, they sounded just as bad as it did thru their shite player, but I made a copy (which I have since destroyed) :hmm:

So keep this in mind as you are buying new CD's from here on out. The music companies now want to control when and where you listen to your tunes.

BTW: the CD rocked! I wonder where else I could get these tunes....:cool:

eh thats still not gonna stop mp3's from being made. its a good idea but it still isn't going to help. as far as i'm concerned fuck the $15 price tag. almost 5 years ago the government found the music industry in general guilty of pricefixing and costing the average cd consumer over 3 billion since the cd first came out. the were ordered to immediately lower their prices from $13 down to below $10 but what did they do? they RAISED!!! their prices over $14!!!!! whats up with that? bah!

I like how these stupid companies think that if they sell you a CD that you can't even play on all of your audio equipment that's gonna make you want to buy more.... What fucking idiots. Make CD's a reasonable price and I'll buy them. Until then I'll continue to download. Besides, copy protected CD's won't stop people from being able to rip them. If you can listen to it you can rip it and get it on your PC.

Is copying CD's any different from what us old timers used to do back in the 80's with making tapes for one another? I remember laughin my ass off at Metallica trying to protect their "music" when back in their early days, they would encourage their fans to make bootleg tapes to get their "music" circulated without the evils of the music industry. RIAA needs to get a life.

I don't buy CDs anymore. I've not bought one in over 10 years.

If a movie costs $19.99 on VHS/DVD, how come the CD is $15.99??? Once I thought of that... I stopped buying CDs.

There's a store that's on my way home from school that sells all new CDs for $10-$13. If it wasn't for them, I'd feel the same as you.

You could always have the situation that I came across once (but is prob more common than I know). I saw that the DVD of a concert was at the store for about $20 and the 2 CD version of the same concert was available for $25. Since the CD didn't contain anything more than the dvd, I bought the dvd and saved a few $$$ and was able to see the concert. I figured that if I really wanted to I'd somehow make a cd with the music from the dvd. (Note: I never made a cd with the music from the dvd)

There was a DVD I saw the other day at the store that included the whole soundtrack and cost about two dollars more than the CD soundtrack. That's damn fishy, if you ask me. "Percieved value," my butt.

And why is the tape (which costs more to produce) only priced at $7.99?

Exactly why the RIAA will never see another dime from me as long as I live. The only time I listen to music is when I'm on my computer(s). I'm sure as shit not going to carry every CD I own around with my laptop just so I can listen to music! Hell no! I bought that 60GB hard drive so I can STORE MY MUSIC ON IT! Hear that RIAA?? MY MUSIC! I bought the cd...it's mine, I'll do with it what I want. :mad:

You want to send a message to the RIAA? Don't buy music. It's simple business. If the price of something is to high, nobody buys it. The price goes down, people start buying the product. Everybody's happy. Of course this would never happen, as there are to many people willing to fork over their cash for outragously priced crap.

There's our problem. But I'm with everyone else who wonders why they think this bad "protection" scheme will make us want to buy more music.

with that said, i gladly buy some cd's. if it's not worth my buying, i may download it, but i generally listen to it for 3 days, if that, and then it just sits there. the only cd's i buy are those buy my favorites, and i'm gonna support them (especially since they haven't been asses about this whole thing like metallica and the RIAA). plus, you really can't find their new stuff online. not nearly as much mainstream popularity with them anymore. oh, and i'll buy up and coming bands taht i like. preferably straight from the band.

you don't understand! Lawsuits don't come cheap! How else are they going to pay for their lawyers other than by passing the costs on to YOU? :rolleyes:

Whats the betting the new player has gots lots of spy ware which will tell them what music you've got on your computer.

Metallica doesn't care about concert bootlegs, they still support that!

Agree completely. If a band wants to release music I can't play on my MP3 players, or in my car stereo, they can get fucked. There's a huge amount of music out there that I could be buying out of back catalogues or on non-crippled media generally.

If Iron Maiden don't want me to listen to them any more, fine; I'll give someone else my money.

Damn the new Maiden has copy protection! I've been waiting on picking up the new Children of Bodom cause it also has copy protection. I have a MP3 player I carry around with me leaving my CDs safe at home and I pretty much either listen to that or on my PC. Sucks with this stupid copy protection shit. Anyone know of any non marker workaround?

I try my best to support local and underground music. I like the music better, adn they don't treat me like garbage.

Alas, I will still probrablly buy those overpriced CD's though.

Now that just sucks. No wonder we download the raw mp3's off the net and erode their profits....
