This one just popped into my head as I was grabbing a Jeff Beck CD to throw in - it's been a favorite for a long time
Faces - Maybe I'm Amazed Wow, wow, wow. It's a live recording (I believe it's on "Long Player" but I don't feel like digging through the crates of vinyl right now to verify) and really incredible to listen to. Rod seems unsure of either himself or the audience's reaction at first but about a third of the way in, you can tell he's getting his legs in the song and the band is as well and by the last half, they are just _going_for_it_ Love Rod's intro; "You might know this song and you might not. If you don't, I REALLY don't know where you've been..."

The Replacements did a bad-assed cover of "Cruela DeVille" from 101 Dalmations. Also in the quirky category, Bob Mould did a very nice cover of the theme from the Mary Tyler Moore Show. And while we're in the classic alternative bands, REM's version of "King of the Road" cannot be forgotten.
Dead Kennedys did a bang up job of "Viva Las Vegas" which was revived for the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas soundtrack. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones do mean covers. They do "Detroit Rock City" particularly well. "Enter Sandman" is another good one. The best cover of all time is the Rolling Stones version of "Satisfaction." It's so signature that most people don't even know it is an Otis Redding song. However, Jimi Hendrix (already noted for great Dylan covers) kicking out "Like a Rolling Stone" live at the Monterey Pop Festival is unbelievable.

Neil Young's Cover of *Imagine* by John Lennon.
I can now, after 20 years of not being able to listen to it w/out crying, do so. *Across The Universe* cover of Lennon's by Rufus Wainwright, Sean Lennon & Moby. *Stop Your Sobbing* Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde) cover of Kinks. Many of the other covers I like have already been named, like Pettys' Rock & Roll Star... No flaming please, but what exactly is the almost uniform facination with Metallica about--Kirk Hammett, maybe? Last edited by Double D; 09-04-2003 at 06:45 PM.. |
