Some that come to mind:
1) Devo cover of Neil Young's Ohio 2)Cyndi Lauper cover of Disco Inferno 3)Tom Petty cover of So you want to be a Rock 'n Roll Star Worse entire CD of covers:Gloria Estephan.Straight rendition of originals. Her husband must have talked her into that one. |
I second SRV's Hendrix covers. I also really like Weezer's cover of "Velouria" by the Pixies, it brings a whole different feel to the song.
|

my kinda topic... good covers are a weakness of mine. Coming to mind as I've read down this thread...
Tom Jones - Kiss Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane Dynamite Hack - Boyz N Tha Hood Dwight Yoakam - Suspicious Minds The Clash - I Fought the Law Siouxsie and the Banshees - Dear Prudence Gourds - Gin & Juice SRV - Voodoo Chile Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower NIN - Get Down, Make Love Gipsy Kings - Hotel California Shawn COlvin - Every Little Thing He Does Is Magic Far Corporation - Stairway to Heaven Tool - No Quarter Kevin Gilbert - Kashmir Johnny Cash - Hurt Toy Matinee - Funeral for A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding Tom Jones - Kiss Cake - I Will Survive Dweezil & Ahmet Zappa - Hit Me Baby one More Time Beth Orton, Ryan Adams - Brown Sugar (even if Ryan got the words wrong) Kevin Gilbert & Jonatha Brooke - O Come Emmanuel Melissa Etheridge - The Weakness in Me Manfred Mann - For You (yet another Springsteen cover, but I always liked this one best) ELO - Do Ya Cheap Trick - California Man Jim's Big ego - Feelin' Groovy Buck Dharma - Don't Fear the Reaper (redid his own song a few years ago...kicks ASS) Racer X - Godzilla (who said Fu Manchu? Racer X is the bomb) RHCP - Higher Ground White Stripes - Jolene Paula Cole - Jolene (_completely_ different take on it) Laibach - Sympathy for the Devil Red House Painters - Follow You, Follow Me Red House Painters - Silly Love Songs Gilby Clarke - Dead Flowers Frente - Bizarre Love Triangle Januaries - Paranoid Dweezil & Ozzy - Stayin' Alive Dweezil & Donny Osmond - Stayin' Alive (why does Dweez dig that song SO much?) Eric Cartman's sweet, melodic rendition of "Come Sail Away" by STYX :)(:
|
Joe Cocker's version of "Summer In The City". He gives the right vibe and feeling to it, unlike the fast paced original that sounded like crap.
|
Holy SHIT! Foo Fighters redid Baker Street? I gotta hear that....
I say Metallica's cover of Turn the Page. Killer song to begin with. |
This one just popped into my head as I was grabbing a Jeff Beck CD to throw in - it's been a favorite for a long time
Faces - Maybe I'm Amazed Wow, wow, wow. It's a live recording (I believe it's on "Long Player" but I don't feel like digging through the crates of vinyl right now to verify) and really incredible to listen to. Rod seems unsure of either himself or the audience's reaction at first but about a third of the way in, you can tell he's getting his legs in the song and the band is as well and by the last half, they are just _going_for_it_ Love Rod's intro; "You might know this song and you might not. If you don't, I REALLY don't know where you've been..." |
"Velvet Revolver - Money"
Good cover of Pink Floyd. Gotta love the Wah-Wah pedal! :D |
elixirs cover of Eltonīs Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
superb |
The Replacements did a bad-assed cover of "Cruela DeVille" from 101 Dalmations. Also in the quirky category, Bob Mould did a very nice cover of the theme from the Mary Tyler Moore Show. And while we're in the classic alternative bands, REM's version of "King of the Road" cannot be forgotten.
Dead Kennedys did a bang up job of "Viva Las Vegas" which was revived for the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas soundtrack. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones do mean covers. They do "Detroit Rock City" particularly well. "Enter Sandman" is another good one. The best cover of all time is the Rolling Stones version of "Satisfaction." It's so signature that most people don't even know it is an Otis Redding song. However, Jimi Hendrix (already noted for great Dylan covers) kicking out "Like a Rolling Stone" live at the Monterey Pop Festival is unbelievable. |
1. System of a Down - Metro (Berlin)
2. System of a Down - Snowblind (Black Sabbath) 3. The Gypsie Kings - Hotel California (The Eagles) 4. Nirvana - Lake of Fire (Meat Puppets) 5. Nirvana - Plateau (Meat Puppets) 6. Anything by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes 7. Gob - Paint it Black (Rolling Stones) 8. Smashing Pumpkins - Landslide. (Fleetwood Mac) 9. Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams (Eurythmics) 10. MXPX - Summer of '69 (Bryan Adams) i think MXPX did this cover. And even though i really hate Metallica I am ashamed to say that i really like their cover of Whiskey in the Jar. Its just damn good. |
OK Go - Oliver's Army (Elvis Costello)
|
I love cover songs...always looking for more. Let's add Warren Zevon's Knockin' On Heaven's Door to the list.
|
Let's see here...
Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World (David Bowie cover), Where Did You Sleep Last Night (?) ...both from Unplugged RATM - Maggie's Farm (Bob Dylan cover) Audioslave - Seven Nation Army (White Stripes cover) Staind - Black (Pearl Jam cover) Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan cover) Dave Matthews Band - All Along the Watchtower (^) Fiona Apple - Across the Universe Radiohead - Sunday Bloody Sunday (U2 cover) Tool - Terrible Lie (NIN cover) Tea Party - Paint it Black (Rolling Stones cover) ... a really dark version of the song... it suits it perfectly No Doubt - Oi to the World Metallica - Whiskey in the Jar Avril Lavigne - Knockin' on Heaven's Door :o A Perfect Circle - Ashes to Ashes (David Bowie cover) Most of these haven't been mentioned, I think |
I didnt know Bob Dylan was the original singer for maggies farm, i have been trying to find out who sang it originally. thanks

Quote:
RATM's version and Bob Dylan's seriously couldn't be more different I didn't know who originally did Beautiful World, a but quick google search tells me it's by some 80's band called Devo. link where i got it: http://www.music-critic.com/rock/ratm_renegades.htm |

Ive always liked "Last Caress" covered by Metallica

Reel Big Fish's cover of Duran Duran's Hungry Like The Wold always make me smile. The introduction is hilarious, too.
Oh, and, agreed, Metallica's Whiskey in the Jar is badass. |
the vines - sorry miss jackson

"i fought the law" -the clash
|
metallica - turn the page
|
Neil Young's Cover of *Imagine* by John Lennon.
I can now, after 20 years of not being able to listen to it w/out crying, do so. *Across The Universe* cover of Lennon's by Rufus Wainwright, Sean Lennon & Moby. *Stop Your Sobbing* Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde) cover of Kinks. Many of the other covers I like have already been named, like Pettys' Rock & Roll Star... No flaming please, but what exactly is the almost uniform facination with Metallica about--Kirk Hammett, maybe? |
