RIP Slim Dusty

Quote:
State funeral planned

September 19, 2003 - 5:25PM

The family of country music legend Slim Dusty has accepted the NSW government's offer of a state funeral, a government spokesman said today.

Acting Premier Andrew Refshauge made the offer to family of the singer, who died today at his Sydney home, aged 76.

"The family will work with the NSW Office of Protocol to make the necessary arrangements once the date for the funeral has been set," the spokesman said.

Dr Refshauge said the passing of Dusty was an enormous loss to the singer's wife, Joy, his family, and to the whole nation.

"On behalf of the people of NSW, I pay tribute to Slim's perseverance, modest decency, hard work, and above all, his incredible talent," he said.

"Through an unforgettable career lasting nearly seven decades, Slim Dusty became part of the Australian legend that he celebrated in his music."

Dusty had won the first gold record received by an Australian, awarded for the iconic anthem A Pub With No Beer, Dr Refshauge said.
"Apart from the fact that it's a lovely song in itself, it has special relevance to those of us in the state parliament, having seen Kerry Chikarovski and Bob Carr sing it together," he said.

"It was quite an unusual event in state politics, and the rest of the parliamentarians joining in as a chorus."

Dusty had also won more gold and platinum records, and more Golden Guitar awards, than any other artist, he said.

"When we try to sum up what it means to be Australian, it's often the songs of Slim Dusty to which we turn," Dr Refshauge said.

"That's why it was so appropriate that Slim Dusty sang Waltzing Matilda at the Closing Ceremony of the Olympics Games in 2000.

"Slim Dusty - the undisputed King of Country has gone. But his contribution to Australian culture will live on."

AAP
well, America, and the rest of the world, has recently lost Johnny Cash...

but today we lost our undisputed King of Country.

Slim had more than 100 albums, with more than 5mil sales.

his most famous song, Pub With No Beer, was even sung in state parliament by all of the politicians.

RIP Slim Dusty.
youŽll be missed.

i realise that Slim wasnŽt well known out of Australia, so iŽve decided to post the lyrics of his most famous song.... so that yŽall can read some of his lines.

Oh it's-a lonesome away from your kindred and all
By the campfire at night we'll hear the wild dingoes call
But there's-a nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear
Than to stand in the bar of a pub with no beer

Now the publican's anxious for the quota to come
And there's a far away look on the face of the bum
The maids gone all cranky and the cook's acting queer
Oh what a terrible place is a pub with no beer

Then the stockman rides up with his dry dusty throat
He breasts up to the bar and pulls a wad from his coat
But the smile on his face quickly turns to a sneer
As the barman says sadly the pub's got no beer

Then the swaggie comes in smothered in dust and flies
He throws down his roll and rubs the sweat from his eyes
But when he is told, he says what's this I hear
I've trudged fifty flamin' miles to a pub with no beer

Now there's a dog on the v'randa for his master he waits
But the boss is inside drinking wine with his mates
He hurries for cover and he cringes in fear
It's no place for a dog 'round a pub with no beer

And old Billy the blacksmith, the first time in his life
Why he's gone home cold sober to his darling wife
He walks in the kitchen, she says you're early Bill, dear
But then he breaks down and tells her the pubs got no beer

Oh it's hard to believe that there's customers still
But the money's still tinkling in the old ancient till
The wine buffs are happy and I know there sincere
When they say they don't care if the pub's got no beer

So it's-a lonesome away from your kindred and all
By the campfire at night we'll hear the wild dingoes call
But there's-a nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear
Than to stand in the bar of that pub with-a no beer

- Slim Dusty.

the name is unfamiliar to me, but that is truly unfortunate. Sounds like a quite a muscian just from reading that brief quote in the first post.

Some of you with kids may be familiar with him from his appearances with The Wiggles too.

I'd have to say his most popular song outside of Australia may have been Waltzing Matilda though.

Waltzing Matilda will now be sung with gusto at the Rugby World Cup.

A true Aussie gentleman and a legend to boot.

Farewell Slim.

He is the only country singer I know. He is a true bard. He is to country music what Elvis was to Rock and Roll. And apparently he was a legend of a bloke too
