Its just the new era. Look back to Led Zeppelin when they were around, everyone dressed like them, cut their hair like them, its human nature for people to immitate popular and famous people, so that they can become more acceptable in society, and be part of the 'norm'. Unfortunatley these days, theres so many different walks of life, that the 'norm' is far from normal. You just have to live with it, and hope you don't become a hipocrite, and remain individual.

Yes. Avril is a product of someone's idea of what works for marketing to young girls. What mainstream music is free of that taint?

That said, would I rather have my daughter listen and aspire to be sex kittens a la Britney and Christina or would I rather have her listen to and aspire to be someone like Avril? Her message seems to be rather anti-authority and be a punk.

Both are extremely surface and both are being marketed at us and our kids as product. While I would hope she would recognize these attempts to mold her way of seeing the world through carefully crafted images... I would also hope that she would be able to take from this, or any pop culture, whatever can empower her.

I don't see the benefit in whinging about how manufactured some celebrity is... Let's face it... it isn't going away.

Her image is retarded? Not by marketing standards (as you pointed out - she does have a following). She's appealing to just another music market that is out there. Let her do her thing, and she will fade out or change her image just like other musicians (Cher).
