So Coldplay say this is the end of their soft sound.....

They told MTV that Rush of blood... will be the last CD they make with that kind of sound to it. They figure they've taken that sound about as far as they think they can and it's time for them to try something different. My opinion...they're trying to pull a Radiohead. I wonder if they'll be able to pull it off like Radiohead can though. Few bands can switch up their style and pull it off. Kinda makes you wonder what Coldplay will try next eh? I hope they don't try to sound hard cause....that just won't work. Prolly they just mean instrumental experimentation with a slight of vocal experimentation. Cause thats kinda what Radiohead did they didn't sound completely different....just....not quite the same. So what are your thoughts on this? Of course if ya never liked the band to begin with theres no need to reply but if ya feel the need to bitch about em feel free anyway :D Me...personally...I like em heh.

I have no idea what they'll do. I'm just sick of them being compared to Radiohead.

jwoody 09-17-2003 03:43 AM

They're probably finding it hard to write slow, sad songs about failed love affairs now that they're multi-millionares, hob-nobbing with the Hollywood crowd.

dnd 09-17-2003 07:28 AM

Well personally i feel Chris Martin is a genius, his lyrics just seem to do it for me....one thing i hate about him is my ex used to fancy the pants of him!
but seriously, i think they did change a little from parachutes to a rush of blood. ok the change was minimal but the sound became a bit more strong, they seemed to grow in confidence.
As in a way of a change, he prob will just became totally luvy duvy and write sonnets about gwyneth...
As of the radiohead thing, i really can't see any comparison apart from both out of england

mrcraptastic 09-17-2003 09:28 AM

this will be interesting to see happen. i don't think they'll be able to do a drastic change, much of their fanbase is people that like that kind of slower, sad songs.. if they change that, they could see themselves losing a lot of 'semi-fans'.. the hardcore coldplay fans will probably stick with them no matter what..

I love both Coldplay and Radiohead. Radiohead are my most favourite band in the world, im a Radiohead Freek! Coldplay, I think, are very different to radiohrad. Coldplay are more pop-ballad than radiohead. Its hard to choose what era of radiohead you can compare to Coldplay. Coldplay have been unique and individual, and it has been the best ever gig IVe been too. I don't know if radiohead really pulled off the later experimentalist albums. Pablo Honey and The Bends were similar, OK Computer was a great leap forward, and a very different album. Kid A was even more experimental, taking the electronic sound to extremes, but from there, everything seemed to stay the same. I really didn't find Amnesiac to be individual, especially for a band who was breaking trends on every previous album. It did have its differences, but was very similar to Kid A (Perhaps because they were recorded at the same time). HTTT is a mix of a few albums, namely The Bends, OK Computer and Amnesiac. I like the direction they have gone, with the songs being more like songs, rather than musical art pieces. Ill be interested to see what their new album will be like, perhaps back to their roots with plain old dirty rockin love ballads, can't wait!

K-Wise 09-17-2003 02:12 PM

Well I dunno if that was directed at me but I wasn't comparing Coldplay to Radiohead at all. I was saying they are try to pull a Radiohead and reinvent themselves. I can't really think of any band at this moment that sounds anything like Radiohead myself. It's these jackasses who dunno what the hell they're talking about who compare the 2. They just look at 1 factor...."Oh yeah he's got a soft whiney voice yeah thats radiohead....It's not? Oh well it sounds like Radiohead" Eh I like both of em but Radiohead are just few steps ahead of all these other emo-type bands.

Coldplay - The Scientist is one of the best damn songs I've ever heard. I hope they don't change too much; they really kick ass right now.

K-Wise 09-17-2003 03:26 PM

Be careful with that light saber. Slicing off bounty hunters heads by day and chillin out to Coldplay by night....right on.

Mr Scorcex 09-17-2003 04:21 PM

I'm with lasereth. I really like the piano driven songs, and hope they don't change too much. Guess that makes me a psuedo-fan huh?

K-Wise 09-17-2003 04:28 PM

Knaw not really. A psuedo fan would completely stop liking them all together and never admit to liking their older stuff.

DownwardSpiral 09-21-2003 12:02 PM

End of their soft sound, right. . .

sigma1042 09-22-2003 12:29 PM

they get lumped together because they sound similar for the first 90 sec that you listen to before you fall asleep because they are both boring
coldplay will reinvent itself, sure, as much as radiohead has, gotten worse through age
older radiohead was ok, the first coldplay was ok as well, but both have gotten too undeservedly big now
neither band is close to as talented as they are portrayed
both singers are not very good, martin is better, yorke is absolutely horrible,
lyrics are overrated, musically they are both decent coldplay is good because of simplicity, radiohead can be very good, but wastes too much on stupid electronic crap that a monkey can do

Realizm 09-22-2003 02:57 PM

Coldplay should not freaking change. Their music is wonderful the way it is now. Damnit.

K-Wise 09-22-2003 04:01 PM

Everyone says Coldplay sounds like Radiohead....no one makes a reasonable description...like say...Coldplay sounds like Bread. Much more sensible

Asta!!

MSD 09-23-2003 09:03 AM

I like their music, and I hope that whatever they come up with next is as enjoyable as their past work. I hope thta they aren't being pressured into another type of sound that their record label thinks will sell better.

Killconey 09-23-2003 11:13 PM

For those sick of a Radiohead comparison, maybe Ben Folds will work. I'm not talking about the sound of his music, but rather the way he transitioned from doing Ben Folds Five, which was a very strict sound, to his solo career. Now that was a successful way of growing without losing what you've got! Hopefully Coldplay will do the same. It would be a shame to lose them.

K-Wise 09-24-2003 01:33 AM

^^^ sounds reasonable enough.

Mr.Deflok 09-24-2003 02:23 AM

I heard they were gonna do punk. Word to your mother!

battlemouth 09-25-2003 05:43 PM

dnd 10-07-2003 05:49 AM

i know i am coming in late on this one...but does anyone have a link to this?? I am really exccited to hear what they have in store...

BTW, if you have a chance, see these guys live. I have seen them twice and loved it. (Although Foo Fighters and QOTSA blew them away at V-festival ;))

Doos 10-15-2003 05:53 AM

Gwyneth doesn't sing too badly actually. Less whiney than Thom Yorke :)

K-Wise 10-15-2003 08:24 PM

Gwyneth is like a lounge singer. Not too bad but could she do the band justice? Well we'll just have to see about that.

Asta!!
