David Bowie - Reality (New Album)
<center></center>
Well it's been little over a year since I was blessed with what is to me the greatest album of all time, Heathen by David Bowie was... no, is the masterwork of the music history. I was not too surprised however, Bowie's works are never anything short of brilliant, but Heathen still blew me away. About a month ago I heard that Bowie had a follow up album coming out this week and was shocked and amazed, how could I not have heard that a new album was in the works? I, who owns nearly 35 Bowie recordings? That amazed me, but what shocked me was how soon a new album was coming out. In my mind artists who release albums too soon after their last usually produce a half arsed missable coffee coaster. All the same, my loyalty towards Bowie provoked me to buy his new album "Reality" and at a first listening I was disappointed, not enough to make me say "no more Bowie, never again!". I didn't cry myself to sleep, instead I listened to it again, and again, and found myself humming the tunes to myself while not listening to the album and finding myself wanting to grab that CD and blast it in the stereo. I love this album now. I still don't hold it such high esteem as I do "Heathen" (or "Black Tie, White Noise" for that matter) but there it is, I love it. 'New Killer Star' and 'Pablo Picasso' are eclectic and exceptionally groovy. Driving around in the car playing those two tracks feels awfully stylish. I haven't yet psychoanalysed the album yet but through the perspective of how it sounds and feels it's tremendous. My one qualm with "Reality" is the placing of track number 4 (of 11 tracks), it's called 'The Lonliest Guy' and is very depressing as one can deduce by the title of the song. Now I find no fault in the depressing song but I feel depressing songs should serve as intro's or outro's to an album. But a simple track skip/program can remedy that anyway. All in all I'd give this album 4 out of 5 stars, "Heathen", "Black Tie, White Noise" and "Outside" in my opinion are much better than this outing but with that said this album is perfectly acceptable and greatly enjoyable. Highly recommended, especially in a market polluted with so much tripe, it's great to see talent shine through so strongly. -Mr.Deflok (Mayur Gandhi) Last edited by Mr.Deflok; 09-16-2003 at 12:04 AM.. |
