God of Thunder 10-15-2003 07:51 AM

Coming up on the 24-hour mark.

Hint: The one time lead singer of the band now has his own reality show.

Yes.

The Stonehenge joke in Spinal Tap is a reference to Black Sabbath's attempt to use the monuments in their stage show. They used props that were too large and apparently too heavy. While rehearsing for the tour, the staged buckled under the weight and the props were then put away and never used.

You're up jimk.

jimk 10-15-2003 12:53 PM

ok.........

"Train in Vain" Great song...even though most people thought it was called Stand By Me...but it was Train in Vain. Some copies of the vinyl had a "lock groove" in front of it, which meant that you had to pick up the needle & put it back down just past that groove in front of the song. Other copies just rolled right into it after about 1:30 of silence

I'll try & think of a question...give me a sec...

123123 10-15-2003 09:50 PM

OK, I've got one.

Uncle Kracker recently covered "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray. However, Dobie didn't write the song & it wasn't written for him originally.

Who was it written for & how did Dobie Gray come to be the one to record it?

jimk 10-16-2003 04:26 AM

123123, i did not know about the lock track thingy.....my old vinyl didn't have that.

123123 10-16-2003 07:36 PM

Yeah...I'd heard of "lock grooves" before, but not with the Clash. Then I guy I work with brought in a copy that had one.

So...no takers on the question? Need a hint? You'll kick yourself when you hear the answer...

I'm back..... and I know this one. Dobie Gray was friends with songwriter, Paul Williams, who's brother was also a songwriter and producer. His brother, Mentor Williams wrote the song and asked Dobie Gray to sing it and he'd produce the album.
That's the story, and I'm stickin' to it!

perripken 10-17-2003 06:07 AM

next question:
Who helped Guns n Roses write the classic song "You could be mine"?

Bernie Taupin and Elton John.

New question:

Before settling on the name Pink Floyd, the band tried several other names. One name ended up being used by a popular heavy metal band (though in a slightly different form). What is that name?

Close...I mean, what you said is true. But, the song was actually written for Elvis...Dobie was a demo singer. When Elvis heard Dobie's demo version, he said "I like...but that Dobie guy can sing it just as good as I can. You should just have him do it."

Granted, I did have some inside info on that question...Uncle Kracker told me that story when I interviewed him a couple months ago...but good job perripken.

So is my Pink Floyd question the currently active question?

Yes, it is.

Derwood 10-19-2003 06:04 PM

well it's been over 24 hours, so I guess it's officially a stumper.

One of Pink Floyd's original names was the Megadeaths.

Alright, an easier one:

What famous songwriter helped pen Elivs Costello's hit "Veronica"?

high_way 10-20-2003 12:02 AM

paul mccartney

Derwood 10-20-2003 02:19 AM

Excuse my absense, but all hell has broken loose here- just checkin' in to see what's happening. I don't know the answer to the RHCP question, but I love them.
Hey, it's great to see this thread doing so well!
G.O.T., are you still out there? I won't be able to check in as often until I get my shit together around here.

God of Thunder 10-23-2003 07:18 AM

I'm still here. I poke my head in to check on it on a regular basis.

I just haven't known the answers to the latest batch of questions though.

But, I'm learning a lot :D

I have a couple of questions waiting for when I do know the answer.

perripken 10-23-2003 08:46 AM

I'm learning too, guess that's what it's all about,eh?
Looking forward to seeing your questions.

high_way 10-23-2003 01:47 PM

umm i didnt think they had a name before they formed but i am pretty sure that slovak and/or irons played in a band called what is this and that flea played in fear before forming chili peppers. not sure about keidus

Chingal0 10-23-2003 07:27 PM

TFMMMM!?

Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem?

costello 10-23-2003 10:48 PM

eh high_way is close enough i suppose. flea played with slovak and irons in a band called anthem (fleas first band), but they later changed their name to what is this. flea then quit and joined fear, and later was playin some funky basslines with anthony, who he had met in a highschool fight. anthony said he had a rap that went with the line, and it ended up becoming "out in l.a.". they invited irons and slovak to come play with them, and called themselves tony flow and the miraculously majestic masters of mayhem. they then changed their name to the red hot chili peppers. your two responses delt with the answer in some way, and thats how it went down. peace :)

high_way 10-24-2003 07:48 AM

yeah that was a hard one costello, but i liked it. i dont have a quesiton and you got the right answer technically, so it is your quesiton Chingal0

Grinspoon got their name from a pro-marijuana activist named Dr. Lester Grinspoon. Dr. Grinspoon supports the use of marijuana for medical purposes, and has shown an interest in the progress of the band.

Chingal0 10-27-2003 07:35 PM

OMG i thought i lost!..... now i feel like shit for keeping you all hanging! ... ok here we go..

Milli Vanilli. What were the names of the ACTUAL singers?
