Ever want to just toss the coin, and impluse buy a CD from an unknown band?

I'm feeling that way right about now... random and dispersed... Just browsing through www.cdbaby.com, and previewing this band and that... If I hear what I like, it goes in the cart. Ever feel that way?

Suppose thats not much help. Not much of a useful thread either. So in the spirit of not taking up TFP's webspace in vain, I appeal once again to your helpfulness :D

I feel like...
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Mogwai
Sigur Ros

Anyone have suggestions for me?

supernova 09-10-2003 07:55 PM

Mogwai I would recommend. Try Dredg, it might be what you're looking for.

Nefir 09-10-2003 08:57 PM

I've already got more than enough Mogwai and Dredg :D

In fact, everything I've listed there, I have, and love... I'm just looking for a similar sound.

The coin has been tossed. The dice are in the air. The bottle is spinning.

Nefir has ordered a bunch of independent bands that nobody's ever heard of (most likely), especially himself:
EMERY REEL: ...for and acted upon through diversions
TUNGSTEN74: await further instructions
SH'MANTRA: formula orange
UNEXPECT: utopia
SCOTT MOSHER: virtuality
HEAVENSDUST: seven sins

World's King 09-10-2003 09:03 PM

All three of those bands kick ass.

Godspeed is fucking excellent. If you like that instrumental metal sound, check out a band called mono. Their cd is called "one step more and you die."

Nefir 09-13-2003 07:53 AM

Whoa... I've just been very pleasantly surprized! I've received an email from one of the artists whose' CD I ordered:

Quote:

Hey, thanks for the support! As an independent, self-financed musician,
any and all monetary additions to the ole'
coffers are appreciated, aid in the production and logistics of the
follow-up CD, and tend to make my typing hands
a little tempermental.

Seriously, I hope you enjoy the CD, as it is more than just a music
CD... It veers off into the complimentary and
symmetrical realms of digital art & personal philosophy, so VIRTUALITY
is truly a labor of love, and a production of
intense personal financial depletion. (LOL). Anyhow, feel free to email
me once you receive it and have had the
proper period of musical digestion, with your remarks, comments,
opinions and reviews of VIRTUALITY. If you like I
will post them in my Press section of the VIRTUALITY website, with a
link to your own homepage, free of charge, of
course!

Feel free to sign up for the electronic mailing list with monthly
updates (the ambient mind link, below) and details on the progress of
CD#3, entitled, INFERNO.

Again, muchos gracias for the support, and I look forward to hearing
from you.

This was really unexpected, and is a very nice touch. I never treated buying a CD as a personal experience, but now that I am venturing into independent labels and self-produced artists, it is time to rethink that viewpoint.

Nefir, try http://www.allmusic.com if you type in a band, they will recommend other bands that sounds similar/same to them. So that might help. However, I do live in Austin, Tx., where it's cheaper to go see a show than to buy an album. I have been tempted to just go see a random band. Will probably do that soon, just for the helluva it.

Last CD I bought was a toss of the coin situation. Heard one song playing in the background at the music store and bought the CD...Soilwork - Figure Number 5

Great CD btw :)

maximusveritas 09-14-2003 05:44 PM

Those are some pretty unique bands, its unlikely you'll find another band that does what they do as well as they do it.

SkanK0r 09-14-2003 07:45 PM

Oddly, I JOINED a band whose CD I randomly bought. I bought it because someone browsing next to me reccomended it. I loved it, went to one of their shows, met them, hit it off. My band opened for their band. Their drummer quits as my band dissolves. Gotta say... that worked out, eh?
