MTV gives Johnny Cash props

In an unexpected show of respect and regard for a musical founding father, MTV has nominated Johnny Cash's "Hurt" video for 6 VMA's. Doesn't mean he'll win, but I'm still impressed they did it. Normally MTV doesn't recognize anyone whose album didn't come out in the past 3 days.

It's one of the saddest videos ever.

Derwood 08-27-2003 06:41 PM

Wow, no one cares about the Man in Black, huh? Well damn

Plan9Senior 08-27-2003 07:17 PM

His cover of hurt is actually better and more true for him then the original is for Trent. Hope he wins one :) Johnny Cash is the man!

djtestudo 08-27-2003 09:20 PM

If that is the video I think it is, I can't even watch it. Too upseting.

kwIII 08-27-2003 09:28 PM

It really is, the old guy has been through alot though

HeAtHeN 08-27-2003 09:29 PM

I agree, that video always brings a tear to my eyes. Its so gut wrenching.

I hope he wins... its an amazing version of the song.

Derwood 08-28-2003 06:34 AM

If he doesn't win anything, I can live, so long as Good Charlotte somehow dies in a fiery pyrotechnic accident

tinfoil 08-28-2003 06:48 AM

That is quite possibly the best music video I have ever seen. It really says a lot about his life and that he was willing to share it with everyone speaks a lot about the man.

It made my wife cry.

Derwood 08-28-2003 09:38 AM

apparently Cash's family didn't even want to see the video because it was so sad. The passing of Cash's wife makes the video that much sadder.

In fact, that entire album ("American Recordings IV - The Man Comes Around") is very sad. Except the last track, which just makes you smile.

 +1

Mr. Spacemonkey 08-28-2003 07:58 PM

Yeah, the video was pretty good, but i think Trent Reznor did a MUCH better job singing the song than Johnny Cash.

hawkeye 08-28-2003 10:16 PM

That video was one of the few things to penetrate my mind over the last year. It means a lot to me, and I really hope he wins, because of it, and because of all the other things he has done for us all musically. (this being (NoM)TV tho, I don't count on it.)

K-Wise 08-29-2003 12:01 AM

Jonny Cash didn't win a FAWKIN thing!!

UTTER BULLSHIT! I gotta give props to that Justin mo fucka though for being classy enough to admitt he didn't deserve that shit. Missy Elliot also beat him out for video of the year. The world is goin to hell. If yer one a the people who voted for missy in any a her catagories stab yerself! Seein Madonna kiss Britney n Christina was fuckin great though. I recorded it:D Coldplay was good shit. Mary J was koo too. Just about the only good things about the show cause peoples taste in music these days is....well....non-existent. So wtf you got to say about all that?

Asta!!

Plan9Senior 08-29-2003 12:05 AM

That is unbelievable :(. By the way, about 3/4 through the awards I started to realize what utter shit music was released this year.

World's King 08-29-2003 12:06 AM

It's all fixed.

K-Wise 08-29-2003 12:18 AM

This is true. It isn't their faults really. They don't have minds of their own. It's a little known fact that record companies pay off Dj's and video stations to play their artists songs, and their songs only, a certain number of times a day. So if ya ain't rich enough yer music gets played whenever they don't have to play the "hot" shit. I'm just thankful groups like Coldplay are popular enough to make things worth watching.

Asta!!

yep.
bad situation.
poor...

You can see how I anticipated this and how let down I was in real time, recorded in my journal. Makes me look like a suckah...

never again...

K-Wise 08-29-2003 02:33 AM

Ahh yes. I just read. I share your sentiments my friend. Cash is fuckin great...he definitely deserved something. Sadly he's old and he doesn't look like Justin Timberlake so the grander sum of MTV viewers could give two fucks about him. Tis a sad world. The youth care more about voting the same chick magnet dude #1, 90 times in a row than voting once for the canidate they would like to run this country. Yep all they care about is will the guy keep MTV on the air.

Asta!!

quadro2000 08-29-2003 02:56 AM

I heard, as I'm sure you have, that Cash was hospitalized on Tuesday for minor problems but otherwise was planning on making it to the awards. I have a hunch that had Cash shown up, the Video of the Year award would have gone to him.

*still reeling from Madonna and Britney*

K-Wise 08-29-2003 03:02 AM

Highly doubtful my friend. That decision was made long before they even aired them. Cash would have sat there and watched Justin get it still. Of course after what Justin said I'm sure he would have called him up there with him....and maybe even handed it to him himself. I believe his words were "This is a travesty! I DEMAND A RECOUNT! I am definitely honored to be in the same catagory as people like 50 and Eminem who'm I'm a big fan of and admire greatly but...my grandfather raised me on Jonny Cash and I think he deserves this award more than anybody in my opinion..." something like that. Maybe not verbatum but pretty fuckin close.

Asta!!

wwcd101 08-29-2003 04:31 AM

Snoop gave Cash a couple nice complements. Said he was rooting for him to win. Every once in a while, Snoop surprises me like that.

He also appeared less stoned than normal.

Thanks for listening.

Averett 08-29-2003 05:00 AM

I think Snoop gave up the wacky weed ;)

Johnny Cash not winning at least Video of the Year is a joke. Missy Elliot? WTF ever. She makes the same lame ass videos every year. Remember the trash bag outfit video? Lame.

quadro2000 08-29-2003 05:09 AM

Well, even if they hadn't given him the award (I still think they would have), they would have done some sort of tribute to him. It's a shame. The honest truth is, though, that MTV barely even played the video. I saw it for the first time on VH-1 Classic, I think. I couldn't speak after I saw it. It's been a long time since any music video moved me like that. (Before this one, it was "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" by Wham!. That was a touching video.)

Averett 08-29-2003 05:24 AM

Every time I hear the song, I get goosebumps. I've only seen the video a hand full of times, first time online. Brought tears to my eyes. It's amazing.

Gortexfogg 08-29-2003 05:45 AM

How could Missy Elliot win? She was in some other categories and didn't win... unless her video wasn't "female enough" to win best female video or something.

And Cash should have won too.

KeyserSoze 08-29-2003 06:59 AM

You failed to point out that half of the award winners need to go back to school and learn how to SPEAK english or at least try getting close to pronouncing the words correctly.

The stupifiaction of Americas youth goes on

Ganguro 08-29-2003 08:09 AM

stupifiaction is a word?

Latch 08-29-2003 08:39 AM

I agree. Johnny Cash should have won for more than what he did...

His video brought tears to my eyes when I first saw it also. Even now I'll watch it and feel down.. you just can't help it. I think it's the most powerful video I've ever seen... it's just.. moving. I loved it.

tinfoil 08-29-2003 09:10 AM

Just goes to show that the general public is nothing more than sheep listening to what they are told to listen to.

Johnny didn't win because the sheep do not know how to recognize talent.

Sorry... I'm a little bitter.

Doesn't it make you sick that the uneducated majority of those award winners have a net worth higher then most doctors? :(

Derwood 08-29-2003 12:33 PM

The fact that Good Charlotte won the viewers choice award is enough to make us all just lay down a la Radiohead's "Just" video.

Maybe that is what they guy told them on the street..."This shitty ass punk wannabe band is going to be the most popular band on MTV in a few years"

Exactly what I said man. My sentiments exactly. It's really because of the way Record companies spend their money these days. Like I said before it's a little known fact that all the big record companies pay off the Dj's (Like Funk Flex for example. Mad peeps don't respect him anymore) and Networks like MTV to play their artists video's and their artists video's only! So basically if the company you work for isn't rich enough you don't get a lot of air play you just get play whenever they aren't obligated to play the other stuff in that small little branch of space. Why do you think you keep seeing the same videos over and over again even though they have thousands? Thats how the bullshit works and these stupid motherfuckers buy into it and think thats where it's at and thats what they're supposed to be listening to. It really pisses me off enfuriatingly. I mean you can see it in the faces of the people who work at MTV as well like Kurt, and Ian...they were like "BULLSHIT!" even though they didn't say it.

Asta!!

I think a VMA would have been nice for the most depressed human being on the planet earth.

Mark Romaneck is a kick ass director lemme tell you, he also did NIN's closer and the perfect drug and he did fiona apple's criminal and the most expensive video ever, michael and janet jackson's scream. Plus he recently directed one hour photo

tinfoil 08-30-2003 11:04 AM

Ah, the art of Payola, K-Wise.

azoz.com (I think) has some great material about that.
