Who's your favourite Male Rock Vocalist?
no biased poll like that other thread :)
Mine is Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip He has an interesting voice, and his lyrics just make you want to listen to them over and over. Not to mention that he's the best song storyteller I've ever heard. I also like Chris Cornell and Maynard Keenan. |
well, i guess it depends on your definition of 'rock' but:
jeff buckley davey havok cedric bixler zavala |
Lead Singer of Incubis Brandon Boyd. he rocks.
|
Chris Cornell without a doubt
|
my favorite right now is dallas from underoath...but he has/will be departing from the band
|
Lately I'd say the singer for Revis has a bad ass voice. And I dont tell anyone this but my favorite is prolly Steve Perry from Journey. Let the gay jokes commence...
|
I'd have to say Gord Downie too... what an amazing voice.
|
Serj Tankian is a favorite of mine. A very passionate and strident singer.
|
Trent Reznor and Mike Patton. That would be a mind-blowing colabo.
|
David Bowie, Peter Steele from Type-O Negative and Maynard from Tool
|
Ville Valo from HIM (HER in the US) I just happen to like his voice.
|
David Draimen
|
I could list quite a few, but Tom Petty would be on the top of my list.
|
Hm. I like nearly everyone mentioned, so I'm going to just give a nod to all of them and name Jason Miller from gODHEAD as my choice. He has a clear, striking voice that was obviously trained, and it's easily as excellent live as it is in the studio. (That's becoming less and less common these days.) Check the band out.
|
Robert Plant could do things with his voice and hit pitches that most peopl could only dream about. Jim Morrison also had a very melodic and trancy voice.
|
Chino from the Deftones... no question.
|
Chris Cornell, Mike Patton, Mark Lenagan, Devon Townsend
|
Layne Staley from Alice in Chains had the best voice in rock, in my opinion. Then would come Maynard James Keenan from Tool and Aaron Lewis from Staind.
|
Kurt Cobain, Serj Tankian, and Zach de la Rocha. They are just great.
|
Donald Fagen of Steely Dan. Nice and raspy/weary, while melodic.

MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN

I would have to say Chino from Deftones and Cedric Zavala from The Mars Volta/At the Drive-In.
|
older:
Robert Plant Layne Staley (rip) newer: Aaron Lewis Wes Scantlin |
Joe Strummer
Paul Westerberg Milo Auckerman Guy Piccioto Meatloaf (no im not kidding) |

Josh Homme and Mark Lanegan (the work he did with Queens of the Stone Age)
|
Chris Issaac, Adam Duritz and that motherfucker from Credance John Foggerty (or was it Tom?)- Swamp Rock, thats the shit. I'd also have to nominate Roger Waters and Billy Bragg.

Roger Daltrey. Hands down.
|
Bob Dylan for sure. No one can sing words with as much emotion or sheer power that he can. He can make the most plain line seem like something out of this world.
|
thom yorke...
|
Glen Danzig on anything after The Misfits. But James Hetfield is up there too. And Ive gotta mention God.... just because I got to see Motorhead with Maiden and Dio.......
For those of you who dont get that joke.... Lemmy Killmeister. |
Getty Lee isn't worthy of sucking my left testicle. If I want to listen to a Chipmunks album, I'll buy one that has been properly recorded, then sped up. That Lee guy's a crime against nature.
|
Mike Patton by far.
His vocal range is utterly amazing. |

Dan Andriano - Alkaline Trio
|
Maynard James Keenan from Tool and A Perfect Circle
Zack de la Rocha (Excelent lyrics and one of the few rappers I actually can stand :) ) Brian from Catharsis (Noone can scream like him, and his lyrics are just incredible) Simen Hestnes, the clean vocals on Dimmu Borgir Mikael Åkerfelt from Opeth (I just love they way he changes between clean vocals to deep demonic growling) |
maynard james keenan
jim morrison chirs cornell robert plant chino moreno |
Old: Robert Plant (Led Zepplin), Justin Hayward(The Moody Blues), Freddie Mercury(Queen)
New: Daniel Johns (Silverchair) I know what ya might say but Silverchair are definitely one of the most awesome bands I've heard of any time. Daniel Johns has one a the most versatile voices I've heard in a loooooong time. If you're a fan you'd know what I'm talkin about. I mean he can write/sing songs like Massacre, Spawn Again, Satin Sheets, etc. then do songs like Miss You Love, After All These Years, Favorite Thing, then yet again do awesome songs like Emotion Sickness, Black Tangled Heart, Tuna In The Brine. And on and on all types of different songs. I think their new album is fuckin great even though it's completely different. Eddie Vedder ( Pearl Jam) I can't believe no one mentioned him yet. I rarely see a performer who looks so rivetting on stage. Ya watch him sing he's passionate as hell it's fuckin great. No one sounded like them when they came out either. They're just fuckin great period. Hmm Brett Scallions always struck my fancy. I think his rasp is awesome n his screaming is great. I was a huge fan as soon as I heard Innocent. Then seeing him sing it it is pretty rivetting as well since he really gets into it and you can see all the veins poppin out of his head. I gotta give honorable mentions to Axel Rose, Chino (dude hits incredible notes), Chris Cornel (Hits even higher notes...or at least used to.) Serj is fuckin awesome too his vibrato is amazin I was hooked with Spiders on their first album. Geoff from Queensryche. Brian Vander Ark from The Verve Pipe hell I could go on for hours so I guess I'll stop here. Asta!! |
chris cornell
thom york trent reznor neil young and that guy from live.. |
Ian Gillan - Deep Purple
|
Chris Cornell
|
Cornell, Keenan, Staley.
|
Robert Plant at his peak. His voice had that edge to it
|
Easily the best Vocal artist has got to be Brian Vander Ark of the Verve Pipe, really nice guy, and makes amazing music.
|
Robert Plant, and Chris Cornell are my favorites.
|
Bono and Eddie Vedder
|
Maynard
Mike Patton Kurt Cobain |
peter gabriel. not necessarily my favorite artist (although he's up there), but his voice is my favorite.
|
Maynard James Keenan
I'm amazed by his phrasing and non-conforming vocal style. |
Chris Cornell
Freddy Mercury Jerry Cantrell Justin Hawkins of the Darkness |
Put me down for Maynard and Mikael from Opeth -- when he isn't doing his cookie monster impression, that is.
|
Eric Clapton, Roger Plant, and David Gilmore
|
Trent Reznor,
Dave Wyndorf (Monster Magnet), LEMMY, Bruce Dickensen, call me crazy but i like Bon Scott too, Freddie Mercury, Steven Tyler in the earlier days, |
maynard's prototype.... danny elfman.
|
Jerry Garcia. The most emotion I've ever heard is packed into his voice. His ballads will bring you tears and the rockers ("I wish I was a headlight on a northbound train") will have you moving like no other
|
Trent Reznor
Peter Gabriel Geddy Lee Jim Morrision |
Scott Stapp from Creed :|
j/k |
Kurt Wagner from Lambchop
Jeff Tweedy of Wilco David Lowery of Camper Van Beethoven/Cracker Britt Daniel from Spoon I think they all have very unique voices that you don't hear a lot elsewhere. Not sure how 'rock' they are, but they all are to some extent. |
Another vote for Chris Cornell. He can do pretty much everything with his voice.
|
Mine are:
Chris Cornell (Soundgarden and Audioslave) Maynard James Keenan (Tool and A Perfect Circle) Chad Grey (Mudvayne) Brian Fair (Shadows Fall) Phil Anselmo (Pantera and Down only) Mikael Akerfelt (Opeth) Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) Burton C. Bell (Fear Factory) John Bush (Anthrax) Both Jesse Leach (former) and Howard Jones (current) of Killswitch Engage Warrel Dane (Nevermore) Matt Barlow (Iced Earth) Rob Flynn (Machine Head) Tomas Lindberg (At the Gates and Nightrage) Mikeal Stanne (Dark Tranquility) Anders Frieden (Pre-STYE In Flames) Mike Patton (Faith No More and Mr. Bungle) Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction) Anthony Keidis (Red Hot Chili Peppers) Phil Labonte (All That Remains) Vortex (Dimmu Borgir) Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) |
Freddie Mercury - From "Queen"
Richard Manuel - From "The Band" Van Morrison Joe Cocker Elton John Jim Croce Leon Russell |
Ooo... Robert Plant, Dan McCafferty, Jim Morrison, I like Mercury... Many more...
What about Neil Young?...heh. |
David Bowie, no Axl Rose, no David Bowie
|
Robert Plant in his prime was unmatched, IMO.
|
OMG, went to see OAR on Saturday. Mark Roberge is amazing.
|
What the hell?
No one said Chino.. how in the hell can no one say Chino? |
I'm pretty sure I saw someone mention Chino. You should check again.
Asta!! |
Maynard James Keenan, from Tool and A Perfect Circle, and Marilyn Manson.
|
Zac Maloy - lead singer of the now defunct Nixons
|
Thom Yorke and Billy Corgan, just cuz theyre so unique, although Eddy Vedder is pretty good too.
|
Colin Meloy from The Decemberists
|
Mick Jagger
|
Maynard James Keenan of Tool/A Perfect Circle
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails Thom Yorke of Radiohead Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins Tom Petty of, well, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers |
Mikael Åkerfeldt - Opeth / Bloodbath
Maynard James Keenan - Tool / A Perfect Circle |
Quote:
Howard Jones from KsE rates up there too! |
Alrighty-
Freddie Mercury was absolutely without peer Mike Patton is utterly astounding Ian Gillian - Anybody who can front Black Sabbath and play the lead in Jesus Christ Superstar is AOK in my book. Other than that- Robert Plant Peter Gabriel (Old Genesis era was the best) Chris Cornell Fianlly, Tom Waits isn't exactly rock, and isn't what most folks would call a great singer, but there's something about the way he sings which really does it for me. |
william shatner. the man!
|
Wayne Coyne
|
Mike Patton
MJK Lenzig (Cephalic Carnage) Mikael Åkerfeldt (but mostly from his work in Bloodbath) Dimitri (The Dillinger Escape Plan) .... |
Brian Vander Ark (The Verve Pipe)
Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) |
I liked Scott Weiland back in STP and Chris Cornell when he was in Audioslave, but regardless they brought their awesome voices along with them into their new "super-bands."
Chris Cornell though, man, that guy has such a powerful voice. It's amazing. I wish I had that man's voice, god. His voice peels paint off walls. How about Eric Clapton too? He sings damn well! Oh yeah, one new one. The dude from Sevendust. That guy has a really good voice too. Aswell as the singer for Slipknot. You'd be surprised - on Slipknot's slower tunes that guy has a pretty damn good voice. |
I would have to say David Gilmore from Pink Floyd. Listening to that stuff while drunk is the best feeling on earth. Better than masturbation.
|
Ok, here's my picks, but with special designations:
Best Rock Vocalist Living: Chris Cornell (dude's got chops) Best Rock Vocalist Past: Freddie Mercury (dude had range) Rock Vocalist I Want Fronting MY Band: Scott Weiland (great frontman) Rock Vocalist I'd most like to hang out, get drunk, and pick up chicks with: Steven Tyler (there's no substitute for experience - and the gift of gab) Could name many others I totally dig, but these are the ones that stand out the most to me. Thank you for your time............and a great thread! |
matt barlow is god
geddy lee, bruce dickinson and halford are good too |
maynard from tool, or scott weiland(spelling?)
|
Maynard from TOOL
second would be Brandon Boyd from Incubus |
