Separating the Music from the Musicians
This thread was inspired by the "Name your Top 10-15 Most Hated Bands" thread.
I noticed a lot of mentions of Creed, Limp Bizkit and Metallica on a people's lists. Not to question people's tastes, but I feel like these are 3 prime examples of bands that people hate as much for the personalities of the musicians as for the music itself. I for one totally separate the two. Yes, the asshole from Creed and Fred Durst are two of the more outspoken asshats in the music business, but from what I've encountered, most "big name" musicians are dickheads. Some just do a better job at not projecting their shittiness all over MTV. What I'm saying is that if I didn't listen to certain bands because I didn't like the people in the band, my CD collection would be very small. I wouldn't listen to Oasis, Metallica, or any number of other bands whom I have gripes with the band members. I really don't think the whole "Creed Sucks" movement on this board (and others) would be if the lead singer wasn't a fuckstick. I think Metallica would be given more leniency with their music if Lars wasn't an unclefucker. You know what I mean.

it seems rare that the lead singer of a band can acheive any measure of success without being labeled an asshole. i think there are a few things at work here:
1) the singer IS an asshole. whether it's a chicken/egg thing is a another topic that can be dealt with on a case-to-case basis (was he/she always a prick, or did the adulation of many turn them this way?). 2) it's a long way to the top & you've probably gotta step on some toes to get there. from here the little clique-y pissing matches in the media can begin........ 3) by definition of the job, the singer is going to be, at best, a mild narcissist who thinks their opinions/feelings are important enough to broadcast to millions. i think the rest of any band has an obligation to themselves to either rein in the asshat (good word, derwood!) or suffer the consequences of alienating whatever sector of the populace said asshat has pissed off this week. all that said, i really think creed sux.

Well said.
I still think it's trendy to say Creed sucks on this board, as you are going to get flamed if you say otherwise. I prefer to say that Creed was shoved down our throats and we are sick of them. I liked them when they first came out, but then "Higher" and "With Arms Wide Open" wouldn't stop playing on the radio, and VH1 fell in love with them. I wouldn't buy their albums, but I don't run in fear when I hear them either.

I agree with the above. Creed got over played, and the lead singer has a God complex. But do they truly suck? I wouldn't say so.

Well I don't like Creed's music and don't like the singer, Eddie Veddar does it better. And I also don't like the band cuz its christian rock crap. Christian rock was already popular in the 80s with Stryper, do we really wanna go back to that?

But it would be very safe to say that Creed takes the easiest path to making money. They use a boring template that combines Led Zeppelin with the flavor of the month. They're dull, unimaginitive, & completely lacking in creativity.
But I could say that about most 'rock' music of the last 5 years - at least the shit that's played on the 'hard rock' stations like Limp Bizkit or Stained. |

Well, while i hate Scott Stapp and every member of Metallica a hell of a lot, I hate the music more. I hated Creed even before i heard Scott Stapp open his shitty mouth. Same goes with Metallica, their music just sucks. The fact that the musicians are asshats only adds to my hatred of the band.
I really hate Fred Durst, but i like a few of Limp Bizkits songs.

I don't like Creed or Limp Bizkit both for their music and for the people. But I disliked both before I knew anything about the people in the bands.
I've always liked Metallica though.

Glad to see some of you agree with me. I think you are losing out on some good music if you are too quick to judge a band by their personality.
Though I understand how the personality can make you hate a band even more than you did from just listening to the songs. J-Lo is a perfect example She is totally generic, but I hate her more than, say, Ashanti or Beyonce because she is such a raging bitch. But I don't hate the music BECAUSE she's a bitch.
