justin timberlake gets pelted with garbage

Quote:
In perhaps his most memorable cameo since donning a furry dolphin suit at a Flaming Lips performance, Justin Timberlake joined Mick Jagger and the rest of the Rolling Stones onstage during the veteran rock band's set at the concert for Toronto on Wednesday night. The afternoon kicked off on a low point for Timberlake when a concertgoer's sign questioning the singer's sexuality made it to the jumbotrons for about 15 seconds. Timberlake took to the stage with an obvious awareness of audience cynicism, beginning his set with a small attempt to mitigate the crowd's frustration: "This will be over before you know it."

During his mini-set of "Cry Me a River," "Senorita" and "Rock Your Body," Justin gracefully dodged water bottles flung by anti-pop audience members, and winced slightly at their less than playful jeers. After quietly thanking the city of Toronto for generally being welcoming to him and his tour crew, Timberlake left the stage to make way for more crowd-pleasing acts including the Guess Who, Rush, AC/DC and headliners the Rolling Stones.

Justin got his sweet revenge, though, when Jagger invited him onstage for what appeared to be an unrehearsed performance of "Miss You," in which Timberlake mimicked Jagger's signature sways and echoed his vocals. In a clearly forced but effective fusion of classic rock and bubblegum pop, Jagger even sang the words "cry me a river" for several repetitions with Timberlake. And though the audience still managed to sling a few bottles Timberlake's way, guitarist Keith Richards exhibited remarkable tenacity, as he angrily motioned to the crowd to show the pop star a little respect.

Timberlake hugged Jagger and thanked each Rolling Stone by his first name, then humbly (or perhaps strategically) made a quick exit.

I was there and my cousins were up front with sight-line to the stage.
Some people were throwing bottles of urine at him!

As for Justin, upon intrducing himself, he alluded to the SARs, but started going off on a tangent, which had those around us saying wtf is he talking about?

Except for a Quebec band singing in French and Justin, it was a great show-- an event.

I've never been much of a Justin basher, as I don't follow his music/career, so this was my first exposure to him.
He really does suck, and he looked like a total ass trying to mimic Jagger.
Word had it that Jagger's cute daughter, who was in the wings, had asked Daddy the prior day if Justin could sing with him. Obviously he acquiesed, and it was written about the morning of the concert, so it had to be pre-arranged.

I think it's stupid and rude. Even if you hate his music and think he is an awful musician, it's disrespectful.

Personally, I don't like his music, but throwing stuff, especially bottles of urine? Ugh.

Hmm

Why throw bottles of urine, do you want YOUR band to be walking all over YOUR urine and smelling it?

If you're throwing bottles of urine, I doubt you'd have the brainpower to realize that before the Stones had already slipped and slipped a disc.

I was there too... missed justin's afternoon performance because I was eating some ribs in the food area saw his song with the stones though.

I've never been a fan of his, but couldn't believe people were throwing stuff at him like that. as a side note, water bottles were being thrown around the crowd all day long.. which is freaking stupid because those can hurt... I watched a 12 year old kid get hit in the side of the face with one.

Tremendously disrespectful to throw them at a performer.. just let him do his thing

iŽd be angry as well if Timberfake performed at a Stones concert that iŽd paid to see.

did these people pay? or was this a free benefit concert?

good of Mick to bring him out with him later, though.

Considering the fact that for $20 (Canadian) you got to see The Stones, AC/DC, Rush and a whole bunch of other great bands for a day long concert, I think I could have dealt with Timberlake.
Personally I dont know why he was there, the line up was an A-list of classic rock bands, plus I believe some new local bands then there was Timberlake. Just totally didnt fit in.

I just read an article in Rolling Stone about the concert. Here's the appropriate part:
***
The most unlikely artist on the bill, Justin Timberlake, was booed and pelted with bottles during his set. "I'm the fish out of water here," he admitted backstage. "If I came to see AC/DC, I probably wouldn't want to see me either."...When Timberlake joined [The Rolling Stones] on stage, the bottles started to fly again. But they stopped as soon as Richards gallantly stepped to the front of the stage and glared the haters down. Timberlake himself kept it all in perspective: "This event will be something that I'll look back on ten years from now and say, 'That's something that you did in your career for all the right reasons.'"
*****
(Obviously with that last quote, he was talking about playing a SARS benefit, not playing with the Stones)

Sounds to me like an extremely mature point of view for him to take on the whole event. Regardless of whether you like him or not, people should recognize that the guy is WORKING up there and deserves respect. I'm not a huge fan of his music but I can respect the talent that he has and the work that he does. Anybody who throws bottles at him should get up there and try a few of those dance moves first.

I cant belive that they would schedule him with these other bands in the first place. Personally, I think it is a bit harsh...but hey...funny nonetheless.

The moron who booked him to play with the Stones and AC/DC should of had shit thrown at him/her.

Not because Timberlake sucks (Tho he does) but because anyone with an IQ higher than room temperature should have known Justin would not exactly be "warmly welcomed" when playing with the other bands.

People need to fucking grow up. Throwing stuff at people on stage is stupid. Even if they do suck.

If you ever find yourself throwing something at somebody onstage (intentionally trying to hit them), perhaps you should stop and realize how much of a jackass you are.
