Jane's Addiction - Strays

How do you like the new Jane's Addiction release "Strays"? (Especially when compared to their earlier releases)

From what I've heard, I think it is all in line with the older stuff. Haven't pick up the cd yet, but will, soon.

Couldn't stand it. Compared to the other 2, it sounds very corporate. Not at all what I expected from Perry & Co.

It's good to see Parry and Dave back together, but do we really need to see the album being advertised on TV?

I remember going to Jane's gigs in awsome little venues. Reading articles about how much Perry was pissing Warner Bros. off for not complying. Even supporting him thru his egotistical Porno days.

Now, over a decade later, his face is staring at me from huge billboard posters, and tv ad's are encouraging me to buy his new album 'NOW!'

I can't help but feel Perry has sold out. Capitol Records must have really squeezed him hard, and he must have been desperate.

Still I have to admit, I have liked what I have heard. It dosent quite bring back the good old days, but it is worth a listen. It's just a shame about the way it has been promoted.

Sounds like a lot fof comeback albums. It goes through the motions, and when a song comes on you know it's Janes Addiction, but I don't get the kick inside.

It doesn't sound as bad as most "comeback" albums. I mean you don't here the oxygen machine running in the background or anything, so it may be mostly in my head.

I think it's a good album. As for the promotion of, I haven't seen a single thing for the album. ha!

I happen to have the CD+DVD edtion and find the content worth while and a bit funny.

jane's has been one of my favorite bands since I saw them way back in the late 80's. I was in Germany for the last two weeks and just got back yesterday to go grab the CD.

My first reaction is that, yes, it sounds like good ole JA. The guitar tones are there, the new guy can play like Eric, and Perry still has the vox to pull it through.

I really like the first 4 or 5 tunes so far - in fact the opener is awesome. I'd like to see if the rest stands up over time. I'll be listening more today and will write back in a week or so.

If you haven't picked it up - do so immediatley!!!

If I try not to compare it to their previous three albums (Jane's Addiction, Nothing's Shocking, and Ritual de lo Habitual), then it's a great album, especially in the current mass market of music.

But it lacks the epic tracks like "Three Days" and "Ted, Just Admit It" that change tempo and pace throughout their 7 to 11 minutes. I read that they were trying to create epic songs without creating long songs, so I applaud their effort. "True Nature", the opener, is a great opening song for this album.

This may be being picky, but my biggest gripe with the album doesn't come from the content on the disc. My gripe is with the album cover! Look at their previous covers...the classic Nothing's Shocking cover with the naked female siamese twins with their hair on fire...the artisitic rendition of a week of love and drugs between three people on the cover of Ritual de lo Habitual. What do we get with Strays? A shot of the four members of the band in some lame pose. C'mon! I know it's been 13 years since they last released an album, but have they become that uninspired?

As for promoting the album...I was just at Lollapalooza this past weekend and sitting in the parking lot in front of the gates was a van painted like the album cover promoting Strays' release. After the show, they were handing out stickers and the likes. Didn't see any of the same for the other bands, many of whom seem to need the promotion more.

Metrodub is right - it does lack the killer opus that 3 Days brought on Ritual. Also - the "ballad" like song is the worst on the record. I miss Perry's Classic Girl, Summertime Rolls & I would for You tunes.

I am starting to like some of the songs later in the dics though. And the DVD is interesting...

Thanks for the input everybody. I agree with most of you regarding the earlier releases. I started listening to Jane's when I came across their first release (on XXX records) at a record store and I was drawn to their "raw" sound and emotion. I think success can take that energy away, and it never comes back. This album proves that the energy felt in the earlier releases was real, based on their emotions and feelings at that stage in their lives. The new release, while still good, just doesn't have that raw edge that was so prevalent on the earlier stuff. Time and money have dulled their sound a little, but I still love the band (especially Stephen Perkins on the skins!)

I've seen them live at the first round of lollapalooza, amazing stuff. That was a while ago though, lets hope Perry has kept to a healthy diet so he can deliver after so long.

I Also saw the porno for pyros tour, that was an excellent show.

I am not ashamed to admit that I like Songs Yet to be Sung. Perry has a great sense of melody - and some of those songs get me going. The slower ones are better IMO.

I saw Jane's back before Ritual came out (1988?) in Boston (Avalon) - then saw them again in Waltham MA (Brandeis) - then later at Lolla (Mansfield) and at their relapse tour (Worchester).

I had tix to see them two weeks ago at Lolla again - but had to go to Europe on a f%cking business trip...

Oh well...

"Just Because" is the single off the new album.

It sounds solid on the radio. I'd give it an 8.5 out of 10.

Thanks for listening.
