All Tool fans
To all Tool fans (and probably everyone else anyway), if you don't already know this, i just wanted to make you aware of Bill Hicks.
The album aenima, along with a lot of their other stuff is based on and inspired by some of his philosophies and musings (hence the deidcation in the album cover). To get a greater experience of Tool and pry your "Third Eye" open even more, try to get your hands on some of Hicks's material (he was a comedian/philosopher/truthteller). After listening to Hicks, every time i listened to Tool, the experience was even more profound than the last one, despite listening to Hicks is very insightful anyway... At the start of the song, third eye, you hear 3 little speech clips, all are from hicks's. One of them is my sig if you're not aware. Happy prying. |
yeah bill hicks was an incredible comic. i definitely concur with you on this one. everybody should listen to his material....or even just read the things he used to say. brilliant.
|
yeah i recognized your quote. its a good one :) a friend of mine got a hold of his rant in e minor cd and i listened to it. to my pleasant surprise, i then bought aenima to find the bill hicks tribute. eulogy is pretty much talking about him right? "he had a lot to say..he had a lot of nothing to say i'll miss him.." and i appreciate 'third eye' a lot more knowing the bill hicks background. it's my favorite tool song.
|
rock on. Hicks wa a genious and he is sorely missed. He comic routine is histerical and he is a freakin god. Tool and Hicks together is pure bliss.
|
yeah, bill hicks was great, once I found out about him, I was like, yay, finally a great comic that actually has smart humor, then i found out he was dead, and i was like, aw fuck. Tool is great too, their my favorite band, along with a few others. and eulogy isn't about him, it seems to be about a person they don't particularly like.
|
ya i heard of hicks before i heard tool, i dont know which one i like better, hard to compare really.
|
to me, eulogy more pertains to false martyrs, dying for inappropriate reasons and living false lives. Perhaps the idea of being a martyr and "someone above the crowd" (admired etc) was more important to them, than their beliefs, reasons or causes.
so for that, i'd hate for it to be about Mr Hicks.... Anyway, all songs are open for interpretation for yourself, so along as something, anything, resonates within yourself you should see it as it is for yourself. Thats another thing about Tool, they hate explaining their songs, they want the fans or people to work them out for themselves and within themselves. Which is really great, cause you can think for yourself, without getting hand feed something else which may not be true winthin yourself. |
I've always planned to aquire some Bill Hicks stuff but it's not exactly readily available...anyone know a site that covers his stuff? With quotes, mpgs etc?
|
actually, the song he is referring to is the LAST track on the albumn, not Eulogy. Eulogy is denotatively about Jesus, seeing as how Maynard is so Anti- Organized Religion, but the other message of the song is exactly as sleepyjack put it. Of couse these are just my opinions, except for the track number, That is a fact. >=)
|
this board is becomming a forum about eulogy. I'm gunna have to agree with SleepyJack. The song is totally about false martyrs. though as we hear in judith (kinda sounds like Judas) on APC maynard is anti religion. but thats not what this is about. though it is about false martyrs though, doesn't mean the guy he's talking about is hicks. he could be refering to something hicks once said about people who think they're more then they are. Just a thought. I've never listened to Hicks but i'mma go searching now.

i love tool and christ. weird.
eulogy def refers to christ IMO. but all false prophets in general. my personal favorite thing about TOOL is what they do with their instruments and maynards usage of voice. i've tried desperatly to find other music that picks and pangs and jars sounds out into harmony and i can't find anyone who does. the way Stinkfist and Eaulogy (sp) starts just makes me beam. its complete noise and jangled sounds.... turned into a rythem. |
i dunno if anyone's ever seen this book:
tool book its a great collection of song interpretations and whatnot.... there's a downloadable pdf file (80 pages). it's a great read for the O.G.T.'s out there. |
I agree that Eulogy and Judith are about false martyrs, but IMO, not about Christ exactly, but about anyone who puts himself upon a pedestal and preaches to others about what's right for them. Judith is similar, but recognise the emphasis on 'fuck *your* god', which seems to suggest that he's saying don;t put anyone on a pedestal above yourself.
Or it could be about Jesus and Christianity as you guys have mentioned, but the above is my interpretation. :D |
yeah. i use to have an issue with Judith until i say Maynard had commented that it is directed at pretty much any false gods and not 'the god'. hmm
anybody have any idea if any new work will be around? I just read that APC is releasing a new cd, so apparantly maynard is busy... |
i think i read somewhere that danny stated euology was written specifically with l. ron hubbard in mind. i'm not 100% sure but i do remember reading something along those lines.
|
Hicks is one of the most intelligent, well-spoken comics. Shame he died so early from Pancreateic Cancer.
|
My roomate bought one of his albums..totally kicks ass. I love the part about stupid people and drugs!
|
apc released their new single the other day. the hollow has a thread about it (sorry too lazy to link it). the new album will prolly be out in the fall (that is for america)
@soopafreak cheers for theat link. I am checking it out :) also, one of the underlying ideas from tool, is that we all come from the same place and made of the same substance, so we sould try to be empathetic with one another. another idea, i heard breifly about, was lachramology (sp?) which is the idea of crying to heal yourself. Thats why there are a lot of references to water (especially in aneima). Although since there are so many layers there are so many different ideas and interpretations, hence so much to get out of it. |
ive listened to and loved a perfect circle but never really got into tool, after reading all of this i might go out and buy a cd though, seems more interesting than i thought it wouldve been
|
My favorite part of Tool is taht they can be so spiritual and so serious then throw some bullshit in there just to confuse people. You are most likely never going to know the real meanings of these songs, simply because they are about "your" meanings.
I remember an interview with Maynard when someone asked him what disgustipated was about, he commented, "It's how life, feeds on life, feeds on life." I think if it was up to maynard he would want everyone to accept that there is no "real meaning" no golden answer to these songs. Oh yeah, and about "Lacrymology", Maynard made that up. It's a joke. |
Quote:
also i don't think people are searching for a golden answer about every song, just keep an open mind and whatever resonates within yourself as any meaning, then thats probablywhat it means to you. Although, Its always nice to discuss what other feel or see when they hear or experience something. |
hmmmmmm
posts seriously or posts silly. sounds familiar........ whoops. writes... |
