bands that sound the same
 

Alot of poeple say they hate a particualr band because they sound or feel like another. Now, its generally the idea that the band being copied is a band you like, for instance Creed copying Pearl Jam.
Now it seems illogical that you dislike this band even though they sound the same as another band you like. I sometimes do this myself, mainly out of disrespect that a band can't really think or try anything new so they have to go with a tried and true sound that they know works.

I know a lot of people do it, but what is your main gripe against bands that sound the same as others? (assuming you like the ones who are being "copied")

just thinking about it differently, i see it as illogical and might try to stop doing it myself.

Within reason, i don't like how poeple sometimes go on about bands copying each other and "borrowing" (borrowing is a better word than copying ;) ) styles of play, such that they completely discredit a band. If the music is good in its own right, without too much comparison to others, why can't we try to appreciate it for what it is? and not what it has borrowed, copied etc

I thought "Clocks" by Coldplay was U2 for the longest time. I actually lost a bet over it.

"Fly From The Inside" by Shinedown I think sounds like Alice in Chains and Soundgarden got together.

Hopesfall and Poison the Well are pretty similar at first glance, but upon listening to it Hopesfall is a more versatile and talented group.

all those pop-punk bands on mtv sound exactly the same. 99.9%of them are whining about high school or their girlfriends dumping them.. i dunno.. most of the blonde girls shaking their asses look the same. it's the formula of what sells. if one band is making money doing it.. the rest of them are going to do the same. it's not always a bad thing, but it can get boring.. to me anyways.. although i do like that one band's cover of boys of summer.. thats pretty rockin'.. but for the most part.. mtv's countdowns should be called "attack of the clones" or something...

I definitely agree with Shadow Wraith. I hate those bands (with the expception of a few Pearl Jam songs), mostly because they all sound exactly alike, but also because they just plain suck.

I think all the new "pop-punk" stuff sounds the same to. Most of them just borrow 4-chord progressions from other bands and add a lot of distortion

cannibal corpse kinda bands sound alike, granted its a good sound, but it can get old, and i say "cannibal corpse" cause i dont even know what its called anymore, death metal, whatever..who cares

Like it's been said before most pop-punk bands sound exactly the same. I had a CD with about 4 different bands on it and couldn't tell which band sang which song.

I totally agree alot of bands sound the same. I work in a research lab and there is a cd player 3 of us share on our side of the lab. This one guy loves to listen to Matchbox 20, Vertical Horizon, Default and Nickelback all the fucking time. I used to be able to tell the difference before I became desensitized to the crap known as WUSS ROCK.

Just about every mainstream rapper.


For the longest time, I thought I had never heard a Theory of a Deadman song, it turns out I've heard two, but assumed they were really bad Nickleback songs (as opposed to Nickleback songs, whcih are just pretty bad)

What was that crappy seattle wannabe band? Their hit song was something like

"I am. I am. I wanna sound like Alice In Chains"
"I am. I am. Our next song sounds like Pearl Jam"

They were losers.

And I heard the first Coldplay song like a thousand times before I found out R.E.M. hadn't released a crappy new album.

just about any gangsta' rap sounds exactly alike.. except with different beats.. every song is about shooting someone, or getting high, or effing the bitches...

i don't really consider rap real music anyway...

This couldn't be any further from the truth, IMO. You should listen to some of the new Third Eye Blind album and you may change your mind.

As for other similar bands, it seems as though the emo/emo-core/hard-core/punk-core scene is becoming so huge that a lot of the bands are starting to sound the same, but what makes the cool bands are the unique ones.

the singer for maroon 5 sounds a lot like jamiroquai

a lot of the screamo hardcore bands pretty much sound the same.. but i think genres that 'sound the same' are just things you aren't very specific/familiar with so don't hear much distinctions.

i thought a u2 song i'd never heard covered live sounded like the doves. and they're both british..

Creed COPIES Pearl Jam...
All hair bands copied Motley Crue...
N'Stynk sounds like the Backend Boys...

BUT...

There is VERY little originality out there. Why? Because it's ALL been done before.

So, better to copy a classic, than a pretender.
