guitar strings

I'm pretty new to the guitar, I play a peavy acoutic electric. I was wondering what types of strings you guys use, and what you'd recommend to a new player who wants good sound at an okay price.

hey man, so far you're doing pretty well to have a Peavey. As far as the strings go, Dean Markley make really good acoustic strings, But I am a devout fan of DR strings. They are really high quality and they make really durable ones too. Plus they are relatively cheap. A little pricey but well worth it. I have been playing for 5 and a half years now, and DR make the best strings i have come across. I use them for my acoustic and my electric.

P.s. read the thread "any guitar players out there" in this forum to see my setup. hope this helped.

You should definitely give Earnie-Ball's Earthwood Medium-Light's a try....they have an incredible, eathy tone with rich undertones...

Unfortunately, I havent been able to find them here in Vienna yet, so I have been forced to go back to the standard Martin Acoustics....blah.

And, by the way....DO NOT get taken in by the claims that Elixir's "Last 3 times longer, due to gore-tex" or some other BS. I bought a set of these, (15 quid, mind you!!) and they broke even faster than the Earthwoods.

rubbish, i tell you....RUBBISH!

I use Earthwood's on one acoustic and Elixir's on the other. I just like the tone they have on each guitar. The Elixer's have killer tone but if you play alot they'll go dead about as quick as any string and cost more. Check out the Earthwood's, for the $ they're great strings.

i use elixers on all my guitars. they last longer...if you do not break them (i.e. they don't dull as fast as other strings...supposedly). I don't really have a problem with breakage, don't see any reason why they would break easier than other strings. As long as you take the time to stretch them out properly and everything you should be allright. They sound spectacular, though. I used to use D'Addarios(sp?) until a friend conviced me to shell out the extra cash...used elixer ever since.

Nothing but Martin Silk and Steel's go on my Martin D28. Since ProSound prices all their sets the same, they don't cost anymore than any other 6 string set.

I like the D'Addario Phosphor Bronze (medium weight) on my trash guitar for the brassy contrast.

i agree with zenmaster, in my personal expierience, elixir's are trash. they cost much more, and if you play them a lot (like i do), they're not better than any other strings..

i'd say go for the earnie ball's... they give you the best bang for your buck... but it really all depends on what sound you're looking for...

good luck in finding the right strings.
