Greatest guitarists ever

Who do you think are some of the greatest guitar players of all time?
A few of mine:

Stevie Ray Vaughn
Jimi Hendrix
Steve Vai
Eddie Van Halen

Note: Two threads have been merged into this one, so some duplicate posts may exist.

daneo 04-22-2003 04:21 PM

My favourites are

SRV
Jimmy Page
Jimi Hendrix
Roy Buchanan
Tony Iommi
Joe Satriani
Slash
Ritchie Blackmore
Robert Johnson
B.B. King

BulletBob 04-22-2003 04:32 PM

Ok, so i'm probably going to get some flack over this but recently I came to the conclusion that John Frusciante is the greatest guitarist ever. Let me explain..

Nobody and I mean nobody plays with the style that he does. Every lick in a RHCP/Frusciante song has a purpose. No notes are wasted. Add to that his improvisational skills and the fact that he's created some incredible, timeless songs and you've got what is in my oppinion the best guitarist ever. A few of my other favorites.

David Gilmour
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Tom Morello

daneo 04-22-2003 04:50 PM

How the fuck could I forget Gilmour :o

Frusciante is great, but he's not the best ever. He hasn't evolved any new techniques or brought anything really new to the music world like for example Robert Johnson, Hendrix or Van Halen did. His style is pretty distinctive however and his coorporation with Flea is breathtaking to say the least. I'd place him in the category right under Guitar Gods. Here's my rating system complete with examples.

Guitar God
- Hendrix. All of those mentioned in my above post.

Very fucking Good
- Frusciante, Jeff Buckley, Tom Morello

Good
- Keith Richards, Adam Jones

OK
- Kurt Cobain

Meh
- Guys from bands like 3 Doors Down or Jimmy Eat World. They're probably allright, but I can't be bothered listening to them.

You shitting me? This is bad.
- Tom Delonge, guy from Linkin Park.

I'd rather masturbate with a broken glassbottle than listening to this shit again
- Some Nu-Metal bands I've been lured into hearing around the net. These people actually think they can play worth shit.

N00b
- It's not their fault they suck...

merkerguitars 04-22-2003 05:06 PM

The two best I know of:
Charlie Bingham of the Hoopsnakes...this guy is a god...Many have said he is better than Clapton...and yes he is. I would highly recommend buying a hoopsnakes album.........Best Blues...EVER

Tommy Bolin I would have to say is the second best in my book.

gibber71 04-22-2003 05:25 PM

Just a few who have influenced me;
Jimmy Page
Pete Townsend
Lenny Breau
Wes Montgomery
Jeff Beck
Joe Pass
Mike Stern
Michel Cusson

continued from last post....i hit tab by accident

ice cream man solo, and any live solo. he is far from a one trick pony that im guessing most people think he is, because of his tapping technique.

RAMONES!!! 04-22-2003 05:40 PM

HENDRIX!

HunterDevourer 04-22-2003 06:24 PM

I'll add a new one...Yngwie Malmsteem! The SPEED!

Tophat665 04-22-2003 06:44 PM

I can't believe no one has mentioned <b>Frank Zappa</b> yet.

Then there's Paco De Lucia - best flamenco guitartist ever.

Clapton. People used to write "Clapton is God" on walls without a trace of irony.

Robert Fripp. From the anal retentive school of perfection.

As for the rest - All the ones that folks have mentioned here in all honesty are great (Heck, Steve Vai was Zappa's "Stunt Guitarist").

Eddie Van Halen could be the greatest guitar player in the world, but he has a goofy image that will never go away until he is old enough that people confuse him with Andres Segovia. C'mon, you name your kid Wolfgang Van Halen and you cannot expect to be taken seriously no matter what you play.

josh_s08 04-22-2003 07:26 PM

Jimmy Page
and Hendrix

2 of the fathers of modern rock...

When Frank wasn't fuckin' around, he could blow ANYONE away; suggestion: "Shutup an' play yer guitar" Truly deserves the word AWESOME!!

<Ready to duck>

Ace Frehley

b1m2x3 04-22-2003 08:15 PM

most definatly hendrix....... he could just go off on about anything

Lebell 04-22-2003 10:45 PM

No Question.

Clapton.

'nuff said.

strife 04-23-2003 12:11 AM

Satriani <----- mah savior :) I saw him live at the House of Blues in Chicago and he did a three hour set with just him, it was great if I do say so myself.

Jimi
Clapton
Page
Malmsteen

Those are my favorites with Joe being on the top. There are more, but I can't remember them right now.

And what about great bass players?

Stu Hamm?
The guy who plays with bela fleck a lot, can't remember his name...Oh! Victor W00ten?

I don't know many bassists but was wondering who poeple consider to be a great?

forgotten_dream 04-23-2003 01:23 AM

Clapton, absolutely the best blues EVER.
Hendrix, cuz he could do some crazy shit while he was playing.
Eddie Van Halen
Slash from Guns and Roses

paddyjoe 04-23-2003 04:21 AM

Duanne Allman
Dickie Betts

Live at Fillmore East is all the evidence you'll need.

cinnles 04-23-2003 05:11 AM

I'm actually surprised noones mentioned mark knopfler yet (sp?)

My favourite guitarists (not necessarily the best, mind):

Jimmy page
Eric Clapton
David Gilmour
Robert Fripp
Adam Jones
Jeff Martin
Jimmy Hendrix
Joe Satriani
Dean DeLeo
Tommy Emmanuel

bullgoose 04-23-2003 05:19 AM

I'm kinda surprised that no one's mentioned Carlos Santana or Mahavisnu John Mclaughlin; they did an album together back around '74 called "Love, Devotion, Surrender"; about 50% crap and 50% blow-you-away-good; very uneven, but worth finding!

Lebell 04-23-2003 08:41 AM

Good point, cinnles.

Knopfler also is good. (and I like Jimi too, but Clapton still rules.)

If you want to hear a good jazz guitar player, look up Larry Coryell.

AxByC 04-23-2003 08:54 AM

Brad Delson of Linkin Park ofcourse. :D (note had to look that up :) )

no, I'm not sure you guys have covered about all of them.

Unknown Poster 04-23-2003 10:38 AM

Anyone ever listen to Adrian Legg?

Check out his song "Reckless Love".

Spanky Johnson 04-23-2003 05:15 PM

Well, I agree with a lot of what's been said. I'll throw one more out: Alex Lifeson (from Rush). Not so much on their newer stuff, but if you listen to the older stuff (say Permanent Waves and earlier) and particularly their live albums (Exit, Stage Left, All the World's a Stage) he's great.

soccerchamp76 04-23-2003 05:53 PM

Hendrix, Cobain, Clapton.

apetaster 04-23-2003 05:59 PM

To me, Gilmour and Satriani.

Gilmour is so slow and feely and that vibrato...

Satriani used to be (Extremist Days) the perfect balance of virtuosity and 'listenability.'

Peetster 04-23-2003 07:10 PM

Eric Clapton during his heroin charged "Cream" days. None better.

snowy 04-23-2003 07:57 PM

Clapton. Hands down.

Porkchop 04-24-2003 04:26 AM

Not many have mentioned Mark Knopfler he was excellent in his time.

  • Dimebag Darrell Abbott
  • Dave Mustaine
  • Kirk Hammett
  • Randy Rhodes
  • Tony Iommi
  • Zakk Wylde
  • Scott Ian

forseti-6 04-24-2003 03:05 PM

So many to list...

SRV
Hendrix
Clapton
BB King
Freddie King
Albert King
Albert Collins
Buddy Guy
Tony Rice
David Gilmour
Alvin Lee
Duane Allman
Stephen Stills
Doc Watson

So many more....

bryanzera 04-24-2003 03:23 PM

You are all going to jump down my throat, but here's my contribution:

John Mayer.

No, I'm not talking about the current, glammed-up, playing-what-the-record-companies-are-paying-him-to-play, adding-instruments-for-no-reason John Mayer. I mean solo-acoustic-guitar John Mayer. Check out the finger work on his acoustic version of 'Neon'. At one point, he had the handwritten tab for it on his website, and I couldn't fathom how some of it was physically possible.

KWSN 04-24-2003 05:44 PM

There are really too many for me to name... but personally I think that the craziest solos come out of...

-Zakk Wylde

-Kirk Hammett

-Tony Iommi

-Eddie Van Halen

Those four, are, to me, in a league of their own as far as soloing goes. As for more general guitarists, these guys also come to mind...

-Billy Corgan (VERY underrated)

-Jack White (VERY VERY VERY VERY Underrated... sure, the White Stripes may seem like all power chords to most, but you have to see him play solos with a slide in person to really get a feel for how talented he is... also, he can sing and play rather techical stuff at the same time, which is REALLY hard... for non-guitarists, think rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time... times 80,000,000,000.)

-Frank Zappa (He's just plain awesome)

-Steve Gaines

-James Hetfield

vermin 04-24-2003 07:08 PM

The omission of Ritchie Blackmore, Larry Carlton, Walter Becker, and Jeff Beck from this thread has thus far been blasphemous. Good thing I was here to save the day.

Oh, yeah, and Mustaine rules (Rust In Peace).

vermin 04-24-2003 07:35 PM

Forgot Curt Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets. Very underrated band.

bundy 04-24-2003 11:03 PM

Mark Knopfler
Keith Richards
Ronnie Wood

Greatest Guitar Players

Who are your favorite guitar players?
Some of mine:
James Young and Tommy Shaw from Styx
Jeff Beck
Jimmy Page
Trevor Rabin from Yes
Jimmy Hendrix
Guitar player from Jethro Tull (Isn't it terrible I don't even know his name?)
Craig Chaquico sp? from Jefferson Starship
Eddie Van Halen
Glenn Tipton from Judas Priest
I know I left a bunch out.....

big_bubba 04-25-2003 10:34 PM

I totally agree with Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix, but what about Kurt Cobaine (not too often though) and the other dude from Nirvana? :D

spacecowboy 04-25-2003 10:40 PM

Hendrix is the best but just short lived

Atomic Pinkie 04-26-2003 02:50 AM

Kirk Hammett

Show the love....

and as just a reminder...the FIRST inductee into the Guitar Hall of Fame

GuttersnipeXL 04-26-2003 01:03 PM

This is easy,....Frank Zappa, Robert Fripp, John Mclaughlin, Jerry Garcia, Steve Hillege, Steve Howe, Duane Allman, Dickey Betts, Dave Mustaine, Kerry King.
Kind of a wide range, but I listen to everything....FZ comes first though.

I'm a big Zappa fan myself; I never got to see him live, and I've always regretted that. I'd like to throw out another guitarist that. oddly, seems to be overlooked on this board - Carlos Santana; great talent, and the ability to select band members who really compliment his style; let us not forget Donald Fagan, either

nate_dawg 04-27-2003 06:22 PM

doesn't anyone like SLASH? c'mon guys......

Dustallica 04-27-2003 07:50 PM

Hammett doesn't get enough credit anymore besides the Guitar World Induction(I think Hetfield should have gotten in before Kirk but its cool). EVH is great. My favorite guitarists usually fall into the virtuoso category like Satriani, Vai, Petrucci and Gilbert. All of those guys just blow me away every time i hear them.

I can't believe I left out Carlos and Donald Fagan ( I love Steely Dan) There are quite a few I left out, and probably will leave out more- but that's the great thing about this.... we're all reminding each other of the greats! By the way, wasn't Adrien Beleu the main lead player in Zappa's band?
How about:
Slash
Keith Richards
Don Felder
Joe Walsh
Tony Iomee(SP)
Richie Blackmore
(what was the guy's name in Extreme? He was awesome, too)
keep the list going folks!

Yeah, Adiran Beleau was with Zappa; so was Stevie Vai. In the early '90's, Steely Dan released a four-disc set called "Citizen". It's all 8 studio albums from the '70's-'80's sequentially; the sound quality is fantastic; definitly worth locating.

in a slightly different direction:
Johnny Marr (Smiths)
Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500, Luna)
Blixa Bargeld (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Einsturzende Neubauten)

and Bob Weir can really throw down - I'm surprised I haven't seen his name yet.

warrrreagl 04-28-2003 11:06 AM

Has anyone noticed that the days of the guitar virtuoso seem to have gone on holiday?

Spungfoo 04-28-2003 11:53 AM

Zappa
John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
guy from Watchtower/Spastic Ink (I forget his name)
Chuck Shuldiner (Death)
Mike Ammott (Arch Enemy/Spiritual Beggars)

there's more but my brain's not working right now

Ratman 04-29-2003 04:46 AM

Stevie Ray Vaughn. Otmar Leibert. As well as most mentioned already.

bullgoose 04-29-2003 06:25 AM

How about Alvin lee, or Leslie West, or Chuck Berry, or Dick Dale? Gimmiee some time, I'm sure there's a ton more I've forgotten (much to my chagrin).

perripken 04-29-2003 07:13 AM

Me again, the thread starter.
I heard two songs last night that reminded me that I left out two of my fav's.
Robin Trower
Ted Nugent

What about :
George Harrison
Pete Townshend
Chet Attkins

yes, yes, yes to all three GTO, and did I forget to mention Bob Weir?

bullgoose 05-02-2003 07:41 AM

Ok, I'm REALLY ashamed of myself, and all the other posters in this thread ought to hang their heads in shame too!! We've gotten this far and not one swingin' dick has mentioned the root-user of ALL modern guitarists; LES PAUL!!! God dammit, that's just inexcusable!!

Dude from Nirvana being Pat Smear? (I always laugh at his name). Was he technically a memeber of the band? *shrugs*

I heard a Bob Weir...hell yeah. Jerry too, he's a crazy pickin fool. Especially for only having four fingers.

Being a female...I have to give some props to Nancy Wilson for being one of the first females to rock effin out.

Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton are two remarkable guitarists.

Ani DiFranco really impresses me.

I agree with your selections; if you want to hear a great female guitarist, find some stuff by Memphis Minnie McCoy; she was a blues musician from the '30's-'40's. Imagine a black woman in that time period in what was a primarily male dominated industry that was good enough to be successful and have a fairly long career; she was recognised as a fine guitarist, and a great singer.

Booray 05-03-2003 06:59 AM

As far as female guitarists go, I don't think there's one I like more than Susan Tedeschi.

I agree with a bunch of the above names. Some others that haven't been mentioned:

Mark Knopfler
Steve Kimock
Al diMeola
Paco deLucia
Keith Richards

Yeah, I've heard some of Susan Tedeschi's music; she's good.
There's not enough recognition of female musicians; I personally knew a lady who played a 12-string guitar better than Roger McGuinn; she did it for her own pleasure, but she was good enough to be professional; she always said it was not something she wanted to struggle with, male dominance of the music industry was too hard for her to fight; too bad, she was great!!

Kirk Hammet stands out as one of my all time favorites, with of course James Hetfield as a close second.

To Dustallica.. James is a frontman, and a rif expert, and a very talented musician. But.. And he would tell you himself, as I have heard him say in many interviews, he could never write and perform a guitar lead anything like Kirk. And that to me is what makes Kirk Hammet a great musician. Now.. Could Kirk come up with rifs with the crunch and growl that James pours out? I doubt it. But thats not his job. And that is what makes Metallica the well oiled metal machine that they are. And now with Rob Trujio, they WILL be unstopable.

My personal favorite, far and away is Jimmy Page followed closely by Neil Young.
Maybe that's why my technique is so sloppy:cool:

Technically Les Paul is the greatest IMHO

Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.

jwoody 05-22-2003 05:31 AM

What about Steve Craddock, of Ocean Colour Scene. Not old enough or dead enough to be legend yet, but he could kick the arse of most of the above. Shame he hooked up with such a crappy band.

Thank you double....I was wondering when someone was going to mention him - he is absolutely amazing.
Eric Clapton deserves another mention as does Carlos Santana. Oh, and Eddie Van Halen.

???

What about Eric Johnson & Neil Schon

The greates gutarists ever!

Its not a horribly long list, but perhaps you can help me lenghten it. I feel that some of the best guitarists that I have heard are:

Yngwie Malmsteen
Jason Becker (hes only 17 and he's fucking awesome)
Vinnie Moore
Steve Vai
Randy Roads

What do you think? Can we add some more?

BulletBob 06-11-2003 06:15 PM

Uhh.....Hendrix? Maybe you've heard of him? He sorta created modern guitar as you know it? I don't understand what people find so great about Yngwie and Jason Becker. Yeah, they can play fast and are pretty good at finger tapping but their music sounds like shit.

Anyways, my top 3....

Jimi Hendrix
John Frusciante
David Gilmour

Personally,I like alot of guitarists.

Page,Beck,Clapton.
Wes Montgomery,Joe Pass

But the one guitarist that makes me sit and marvel at his genius
Lenny Breau.

urgodhere 06-11-2003 07:59 PM

i cant believe that i forgot about Jimmi. I feel sort of dumb now. But good work. I'll have to check out some of those guitarists gibber. Keep the stream coming.

This was done already.

Michael Schenker and Steve Howe from Yes should be included in the mix

Hey Doc34465

Long overdue for a reply but i haven't seen this topic for a long time.

I wasn't trying to say Kirk didn't deserve to be in the Guitar World Hall of Fame. He deserves it as much as anybody. However i do think that James is the better overall player. He wrote and preformed the solo in Nothing Else Matters and that is undeniably(dp?) one of the best solos the band has done. However, I do agree that James should let Kirk handle the fretwork on the faster stuff.

I haven't read the list entirely but has Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top been added at somepoint? If not he should be...his fretwork is amazing all the way around. Almost as cool as his beard.

Conclamo Ludus 06-17-2003 07:06 PM

Clapton
Hendrix
SRV

P.S. All who owe it to a long list of people prior.

Honorable Mention for Potential: Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

meepa 06-19-2003 03:52 PM

Maybe not the best, but McCready deserves good mention!

Jason is alot older now; he was 17 when he made Perpetual Burn. He's definately my #1 favorate. Its too bad what happend to him. Now he composes his music with eye movement, if you havent checked out his site, listen to "Higher".

Yngwie, but not because of his speed; its his vibrato that I'll always love. I dont care for anything after Fire and Ice though.

I agree with Vinnie Moore "Minds Eye" is a great album.

Tony Macalpine

Al Dimeloa

Allan Holdsworth

Marty Friedman
