Ok, so i'm probably going to get some flack over this but recently I came to the conclusion that John Frusciante is the greatest guitarist ever. Let me explain..

Nobody and I mean nobody plays with the style that he does. Every lick in a RHCP/Frusciante song has a purpose. No notes are wasted. Add to that his improvisational skills and the fact that he's created some incredible, timeless songs and you've got what is in my oppinion the best guitarist ever. A few of my other favorites.

David Gilmour
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Tom Morello

How the fuck could I forget Gilmour

Frusciante is great, but he's not the best ever. He hasn't evolved any new techniques or brought anything really new to the music world like for example Robert Johnson, Hendrix or Van Halen did. His style is pretty distinctive however and his coorporation with Flea is breathtaking to say the least. I'd place him in the category right under Guitar Gods. Here's my rating system complete with examples.

Guitar God
- Hendrix. All of those mentioned in my above post.

Very fucking Good
- Frusciante, Jeff Buckley, Tom Morello

Good
- Keith Richards, Adam Jones

OK
- Kurt Cobain

Meh
- Guys from bands like 3 Doors Down or Jimmy Eat World. They're probably allright, but I can't be bothered listening to them.

You shitting me? This is bad.
- Tom Delonge, guy from Linkin Park.

I'd rather masturbate with a broken glassbottle than listening to this shit again
- Some Nu-Metal bands I've been lured into hearing around the net. These people actually think they can play worth shit.

N00b
- It's not their fault they suck...

The two best I know of:
Charlie Bingham of the Hoopsnakes...this guy is a god...Many have said he is better than Clapton...and yes he is. I would highly recommend buying a hoopsnakes album.........Best Blues...EVER

Tommy Bolin I would have to say is the second best in my book.

ice cream man solo, and any live solo. he is far from a one trick pony that im guessing most people think he is, because of his tapping technique.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Frank Zappa yet.

Then there's Paco De Lucia - best flamenco guitartist ever.

Clapton. People used to write "Clapton is God" on walls without a trace of irony.

Robert Fripp. From the anal retentive school of perfection.

As for the rest - All the ones that folks have mentioned here in all honesty are great (Heck, Steve Vai was Zappa's "Stunt Guitarist").

Eddie Van Halen could be the greatest guitar player in the world, but he has a goofy image that will never go away until he is old enough that people confuse him with Andres Segovia. C'mon, you name your kid Wolfgang Van Halen and you cannot expect to be taken seriously no matter what you play.

When Frank wasn't fuckin' around, he could blow ANYONE away; suggestion: "Shutup an' play yer guitar" Truly deserves the word AWESOME!!

I'm kinda surprised that no one's mentioned Carlos Santana or Mahavisnu John Mclaughlin; they did an album together back around '74 called "Love, Devotion, Surrender"; about 50% crap and 50% blow-you-away-good; very uneven, but worth finding!

Good point, cinnles.

Knopfler also is good. (and I like Jimi too, but Clapton still rules.)

If you want to hear a good jazz guitar player, look up Larry Coryell.

Well, I agree with a lot of what's been said. I'll throw one more out: Alex Lifeson (from Rush). Not so much on their newer stuff, but if you listen to the older stuff (say Permanent Waves and earlier) and particularly their live albums (Exit, Stage Left, All the World's a Stage) he's great.

To me, Gilmour and Satriani.

Gilmour is so slow and feely and that vibrato...

Satriani used to be (Extremist Days) the perfect balance of virtuosity and 'listenability.'

You are all going to jump down my throat, but here's my contribution:

John Mayer.

No, I'm not talking about the current, glammed-up, playing-what-the-record-companies-are-paying-him-to-play, adding-instruments-for-no-reason John Mayer. I mean solo-acoustic-guitar John Mayer. Check out the finger work on his acoustic version of 'Neon'. At one point, he had the handwritten tab for it on his website, and I couldn't fathom how some of it was physically possible.

There are really too many for me to name... but personally I think that the craziest solos come out of...

-Zakk Wylde

-Kirk Hammett

-Tony Iommi

-Eddie Van Halen

Those four, are, to me, in a league of their own as far as soloing goes. As for more general guitarists, these guys also come to mind...

-Billy Corgan (VERY underrated)

-Jack White (VERY VERY VERY VERY Underrated... sure, the White Stripes may seem like all power chords to most, but you have to see him play solos with a slide in person to really get a feel for how talented he is... also, he can sing and play rather techical stuff at the same time, which is REALLY hard... for non-guitarists, think rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time... times 80,000,000,000.)

-Frank Zappa (He's just plain awesome)

-Steve Gaines

-James Hetfield

The omission of Ritchie Blackmore, Larry Carlton, Walter Becker, and Jeff Beck from this thread has thus far been blasphemous. Good thing I was here to save the day.

Oh, yeah, and Mustaine rules (Rust In Peace).
