They're not near as underground as the rest of these mentions, but I'll have to say Seether. I'm afraid they're going to become one hit wonders for Fine Again, and alot of people haven't even heard THAT. But they are a DAMN good band.

STYX!
I'm not talking about the newer (post 80's Styx)
You probably can't find any of the early to mid 70's albums on CD but there is a CD called Styx "Lady" that is a compilation of their best earlier stuff. They were very heavy rock and roll in their early years, not the sappy love song shit that most people associate them with. If you like stuff like "Miss America" and "Suite Madam Blue", you should listen to the earlier stuff.
I'm probably the biggest Styx fan, I own every album (CD), and I think their best stuff is their old stuff.

They didn't actually break up, it's just that their singer, Andy Khachaturian, left the band for (as of yet) undisclosed reasons... they might as well have broken up, though. He WAS the band. I just hope when they get a new lead singer he's even HALF as good as Andy was.

Oh, and another to add (Chamberdweller said we could do more than one)...

Norma Jean

Incredible hardcore band, the best I've ever heard (Dillinger Escape Plan and the aforementioned skycamefalling are a close second, Nora is third). They used to be called Luta-kriss, but they had to change their name when they got confused too often with Ludacris (fucking stupid, if you ask me). They've pretty much disappeared since releasing their album Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child, but until they release something else, DEFINETLY check that album out. It kicks major ass.

They are sort of an industrial band that likes to add in bits from orchestra, latin, swing type stuff. Raymond Watts from KMFDM does lead vocals.

One band, eh?

I'll pick King's X (talented, good ol' rock)
Make that Racer X (extremely talented metal)
Nah, how about Devin Townsend Band (excellent, ambient, and loud)
Or maybe In Flames (melodic, fast, heavy metal)

EDIT: Just thought of someone else: Rob Dougan. Some of you may have heard of his work for The Matrix movies. Listen to some of his other stuff at www.robdougan.com

Yeah, his music's pretty cool. I saw one of his videos recently... I forget what it was called but it was all feet and legs. Weird but cool.

They're Native American and the guitarist Mato Nanji is probably the best blues guitarist since Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Just one band?

I'll fudge less than others and say

16 Horsepower, and the David Eugene Edwards solo Woven Hand project.

Woven Hand blew every other CD released in 2002 out of the water (imho)

Most of the the 16 Horsepower stuff is gotha-billy, with lots of dark spiritualism. The later stuff has gotten more folky, but it's all powerful stuff. Maybe if some more people listen to them in the states they'll return from their permanent tour of Europe.

I'll second the Talib Kweli nod above, I'd kind of always shortchanged him as the other funny-looking guy following Mos Def around (Dave Chapelle being the primary funny looking guy), but Quality was excellent. When all the other hip-hop artist started chasing after soul, jazz and other fusions, Talib proved that hip-hop can excel on it's own.

The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. With an ethos of upbeat nihilism and ample dosages of Lovecraftian lyrics, they are so very very cool.
