King Crimson. Maybe thats just because they influenced both my favorite bands, NIN and Tool, but they are really great. They have lots of different styles, because they split up/got back together multiple times, each time with different members and a disticntly different style. 21st Century Schizoid Man definetly doesn't sound like it was from over thirty years ago. But also i would have to seccond Dredg. they are great

My one pick would be.....Soul Coughing. Self described as "Deep slacker jazz."

Pacifier aka Shihad. See my first journal entry for more info.

The Lords of Acid (sexual techno), Gaelic Storm (really, really good Irish band), and Stept On (local band from central PA).

Society 1

The Tragically Hip.... my favourite band, but pretty much unknown outside of Canada.

I also agree with Dredg and Talib Kweli, Kenna as well(I have the CD it's pretty good but he techno'd it out a lot cause of Chase Chad of the Neptunes handling the production) but since I have to pick one band I'll pick Silverchair I'll probably be the only one to pick them too but I think their latest CD is far too good for it to get as slept on as it has. I also would like people to check out Ours and Haven as well. Those 2 are pretty good. Asta!! |
Portishead

good call KWSN. but its spelt Hi 5. http://kidscentral.mediacorptv.com/c...s/hi5alive.jpg their music is perhaps a little young for me... and Tim and Nathan are a bit camp for my liking as well... but i do appreciate their talent. look out England, they´re on their way. |

Hawkeye is my hero! A reference to Neil Gaiman and the love of Saviour Machine; how much cooler can you get? For those of you who don't know, these guys have been working on a project called Legend which spans four cds and covers the entire end of the world. Absolute genius!

Bela Fleck and the Fleck Tones.
Victor Wooten is a bass virtuoso, quite possibly one of the best that has ever lived. Bela is a genius on the banjo, Jeff is a wind horn god and Futch... well he is just bizarre, but brilliant in his own way. He plays an instrument he invented and custom made which he calls a synth axe or drumitar. It's a series of synthesized percussion sounds incorporated into a electric guitar frame. Instead of strings he has a bunch of buttons he manipulates to generate his sound. The band has no drummer. Just Futch, who generates the sounds and rythms of an entire percussion section with a few of his fingers. Amazing. Simply amazing. If your into talent or just appreciate gifted musicians, these guys will blow you away. -bear |
Just one band?
Allright, since Opeth is allready mentioned I'll have to go with Catharsis, an American metal/hardcore band. Their destructive anti-establishment and self searching lyrics are just incredible and fit so well with their near blackmetal and hardcore mix. The music is so destructive, but it also has a strange beauty thats hard to describe... While it truely describes the darkest sides of our society and our own existence, it also shows that there is still hope. It really is exactly what the name of the band says, a catharsis. Too bad they're on a hiatus at the moment, and I doubt they'll ever come back togeather again, but you can still check them out on: www.oddshaped.com/catharsis |
