Godspeed You! Black Emperor

I have been a metal-head for quite a few years now. Nightwish... In Flames... Blind Guardian... But lately I've been straying towards more progressive bands like Spock's Beard, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, etc.

Even more recently though, I've ran into a band which, from the moment I heard the first track, I could literally feel it changing and warping my musical tastes.

The band is Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I already own four of their albums - Slow Riot for a New Zero Kanada, F#A# Infinity, Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven, and Yanqui UXO.

Its music is a waking nightmare. You know the kind of dream I speak of - where everything appears to be normal, just like real life, except for a lingering feeling of dread and wrongness, that grows stronger and stronger until you wake up screaming... That is the kind of nightmare I speak of...... It is addictive.

Anyone else share similar feelings towards this band? And more importantly, tell me, TFPers, who else plays like GY!BE?

Exactly how you feel. And when they go out on tour again go see them. They are simply amazing live. So many people on stage and so much to watch.

I recommend some Mogwai and Radiohead. Absolutely listen to Sigur Ros, they are awesome. Yo la Tengo might be for you as well. And listening to dredg is a must. They are a great band. Porcupine Tree would be another fine choice.

For some heavier stuff you must listen to Tool and A Perfect Circle. I assume you've heard Tool by now, but they have to be mentioned. You also must listen to Opeth.

That's all off the top of my head.

pm me if you want anything.

I just picked up the new(est) Yo La tengo album, it's fantastic. GYBE is one of my favorite bands.
I know it's been talked about before (here), but I'm really hooked on The Postal Service right now.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Personally I've never seen Godspeed live, but one of these days I have to make the time for it. I'll give Sigur Ros, Yo La Tengo, and Dredg a listen. I really appreciate the suggestions.

My band has opened for godspeed a few times over the years (cuz we're friendly, and fellow Montrealers), though we're not in the same vein musically.
Oh, and get this. Godspeed's first show ever, there were only three members then, and they opened for US! And now I'm jealous of their success, heh heh. Not really. Well, a bit.
I actually don't like seeing them live, as their music tends to be something I have to be in the right frame of mind for. And when I'm out & about, I guess I'm more inclined to try to socialize/booze it up/have fun than to curl up fetally and introspect shit, or whatever. So I save their stuff for at home, when the conditions are right for me personally. That's my two cents worth anyway.
Enjoy those new suggestions!

Actually, I recently heard a band that may be of interest to GYBE fans, Explosions In the Sky.

Check them out.

add pink floyd to the recommendations, although you'd think that'd be by default or something.

Pink Floyd, Tool, etc. really fall under the "not owning at least one album is a criminal offense" category, so yea, I definitely have more than enough Pink Floyd
Some bands really pave the way to something different.

Anyhow, I've tried out a bit of Yo La Tengo, Sigur Ros, Dredg, Opeth, Mogwai, and Explosions In the Sky. I like it!

/me goes shopping

Hmm...

I really like GY!BE, and I think that the recommendations so far have been really fitting, so I don't have much to say along those lines.

Except for one thing, I think the recommendation of Opeth for a GY!BE fan really only goes as far as Opeth's Damnation album, which is all mellow stuff. This is, obviously for anyone who knows Opeth, because Opeth are normally a Death Metal band. However, Opeth has some mellow stuff scattered around their death metal albums as well, such as To Bid You Farewell on Morningrise.

Edit: Now that I see this:

The Opeth recommendation seems all the more fitting. Carry on.

Disclaimer: The following is most likely uneducated bs from a GYBE newbie. Take it for what its worth

Shokan, do you mean tracks as in individual songs? Or do you want album recommendations?

Either way, here are some recommendations:

1)Turn the speakers up, and the lights down
2)Expect GYBE songs to build up to climax slowly
3)I reccommend you start with the Yanqi UXO album, and the first track, 09-15-00, which within 16 minutes will determine whether you love GYBE or hate it.
4)If you want a good example of "something REALLY nightmarish and powerful" listen to Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls.

Dead Flag Blues from F#A# is also an amazing song, but for someone like me, it would have been a bit too much of a contrast if I listened to F#A# before Yanqi UXO.

Here's the order that worked for me:
1)Yanqi UXO
2)Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven or Slow Riot For A New Zero Kanada
3)The one you didn't pick for 2)
4)F#A#

Rockets fall on Rocket Falls is a simply amazing track. It slightly differs from their other stuff, in the sense that the crescendo is immediately identifiable, without a lot of the preamble most their other tracks employ. East Hastings is pretty terrific, Providence another spectatular showing.

As has been mentioned, Sigur Ros, Radiohead give similar vibes. The former following more closely to the sound of GYBE than Radiohead. Thoms stuff is so varied, its, fairly hard to pin it down to just one genre

I saw GYBE live.
All their songs sounded exactly the same.

Wow, I never thought anyone else had heard of Godspeed. My friends and I are really into indie rock, and I've been listening to them for about 2 years. I think they are amazing. If you are ever looking for a kind of music that completely defies the established norms, then Godspeed is for you

never heard of Godspeed black emperor.. I will look for some info on them.. thx..

Btw.. I will be at the L.A house of blues to see OPETH and PORCUPINE TREE on the 30th of this month. It will be a mellow show with OPETH opening playing the entire DAMNATION selections.. and from what I have heard from peeps that have seen the show in other states... BENIGHTED, FACE OF MELINDA, ... umm... and maybe one other mellow track from past releases.... ... and of course the PT set will be amazing.
