Innovative Music!?
Hi, my name is Nick and this is my first post here. I found this place by searching for a forum with people who have an appreciation for the creative, innovative, and just plain thinking outside the box. I think I may be at the right place.
In any case I am in desperate need of new and creative music. There's millions of bands doing the same old thing, but as a composer/musician myself, I take the approach of creating music that involves a harmonic balance of the extremely experimental hyper-creative with an accessibly melodic beauty. I look for this same idea in the music I enjoy listening to. Something that sounds magical, really. I was wondering if anyone could post some recommendations of music like this. I appreciate some artists of every genre, but preferably when they combine many genres, or sound completely outside of genre! I also thought I would share some of my own work like this for anyone who likes the sound of this... My latest project is called Coloringbook (one word). It involves taking extremely small clips from songs all throughout my music collection, and then remixing/layering/looping and putting them together in brand new ways like a puzzle, for an entirely new sound. Many artists have made sampledelica, but I try to create a brand new sound. There is a concept behind this project, where each song is supposed to represent a brand new color (never before seen!). In order to see the new color, you must listen to the song. This concept is inspired by a condition I have called Synesthesia, and my intention is to induce synesthesia in anybody through these songs as it is a very visual sound experience. Here is the myspace page for listening: myspace.com/coloringbookmusic The songs have strange titles like Wenkweur and Turflown. Each title represents the name of a newly discovered color, but you must hear to see Enjoy! p.s. If you are thinking that this is a spam post, it is not! I promise you I am genuinely interested in sharing and communicating with like-minded people. |

I checked out your Myspace and I like your stuff. All that sound is color stuff is a bit much for me but the first three tracks were pretty enjoyable.
While I can't suggest anything truly innovative (what would that even sound like anyway), I can suggest a few pretty interesting new things which, to me at least, serve to put an interesting spin on stuff that's already been done. James Blake - To Care (Like You) It seems the whole internet is abuzz with James Blake talk as he's put out two insanely enjoyable EPs chopping up everything between dubstep and r&b and a conundrum of a full-length album that's as much an extended exploration of vocal and rhythmic deconstruction as it is effortlessly pleasurable to listen to. Seriously good and weird stuff that makes abundantly clear that what you're hearing is as much the artist's construction as it is your own projections into the sound. The embedded video is only there for those that don't care to click-through to the second link which is a much better example of all of this.

Thanks for the response! I'm really lovin some of this James Blake (listening to the self-titled album right now) Some of the autotune vocals are kinda bleh, but his music has some wonderful moments, and a nice bit of original sound. Thanks for the tip! This track called "The Wilhelm Scream" better actually have the legendary wilhelm scream in it.
You're right about it being impossible to be truly completely innovative, as the root of invention is about building upon/upgrading/applying the ideas and inventions of the past in new ways. Everyone's inspired by something, and that influence often shows. Honestly I pretty much over-hyped the whole "new color" synesthesia element of my music. All-in-all it's really just a gimicky fun thing. All though I am releasing the album as an actual coloring book, with full color cover. I think albums should be made into collector's items for extra incentive to actually spend money on them. You can see some of the crazy color-able pictures an artist made for the book on the myspace page. |
