Is anyone else sick of rap music?

I like rap...hell I liked rap alot back in the day. But is it just me or has rap gotten so extremely lame that its not worth listening to anymore? I mean all they sing about is bitches and hoes and how much money they got and how they're gonna kill you for looking at them wrong. Ohh and I forgot the drugs....they like them drugs.

Now dont get me wrong. I still would listen to rap if it were worth listening too anymore but it seems like all you need nowdays to get a record deal is a couple of songs that talk about the aforementioned that havea bitchen beat. Its gotten to the point where techno seems like its the best alternative because at least there you have good beats with different stories behind them.

Not some doushbag singin about his baby girl and his ICE.

"Ohh look at you...you got diamonds....yippie fricken doo dah"

There arn't many good rappers out there anymore. Everyone is slow and mumbles alot. Look at 50 cent. What an ass. Can anyone really say he's a good rapper? I can write songs as good as he can. Its not hard to write a song that rhymes the word fuck and shit 20 times, especially when you pen it before you sing it.

I think the only people I have respect for anymore are the ones who can free style or rap hella fast. Like eminem and busta rhymes. Eminem is fast as hell and he can free style with the best of them. And busta...well we all know busta.

anyway...I think I'm gonna write me a rap song...produce a sweet ass beat on my friends keyboard and release it on the net. Maybe piss off some gangsta wannabees.

By the way...sorry I havn't posted before...I was a leech...my bad....I'm broke in the cash department but not in my mind. I'll make up for my selfishness.

Rap suffers from what every other genre suffers from; overexposure and statistics. Corporate heads decide what sells the most records and sadly that means we get to hear a lot of the same stuff over and over again. The odds of a new sound hitting it big are slim and therefore the big backers of the RIAA are not going to be pumping the money to unproven sounds.

Ok, my cynical side believes that maybe the general public suffers from bad taste, but I think there is more to it than that…

In any case, there is good rap music I am sure… It just isn’t likely to be found on the radio and TV so stop looking there to find it. However, I am not one to recommend any good rap songs or artists as that genre is not really my forte. Hip-hop is sort of close… Some Hip-Hop artists I like include Mos Def, Common, and Dead Prez. Of those I would especially recommend Mos Def and Common. Though really hip-hop is isn’t really my specialty either, so if there is anyone else out there with better recommendations I would be interested!

I'd like to suggest that you turn off the radio/TV and look somewhere else for rap/hip-hop. Check out Underground Hip Hop and do a search for some underground hip-hop sites. There are some really talented people out there, you're just not going to hear them on the radio/TV.

I hope you find something you like out there. Good luck.

Macheath 07-15-2003 03:47 AM

I hear that in the rest of the world (like Brazil and South Africa, etc) they rap about stuff like Aids and unemployment.

In the US, big corporations force people to listen to stupid, bling bling hip pop.

Spinach_Indeed 07-15-2003 04:13 AM

That's nice. This should be in the Music Forum.

Ganguro 07-15-2003 05:57 AM

Yeah, I'm getting sick of rap music somewhat, I just don't really dig this new shit. The only quality rapper out right now is Fifty Cent. I can't wait for DMX's new album. Or Nas, or Eminem, or even Nelly.

shinji 07-15-2003 12:28 PM

xavier 07-15-2003 01:57 PM

no, rap music is the shit.

Stare At The Sun 07-15-2003 02:46 PM

I think rap music is shit. Personally. But, I'm a big metal/industrial guy myself, i can't stand rap -_-. I hate what it spawns, and i hate the look of it, and im sorry, but most rappers(mainstream) dont even write their own shit anymore. Its fucking pathetic. I have respect for certain rappers, like 2-pac(cali love is a decent song) and old guys like that, but more and more, its just turning into bitches and hoes, ice and escalades on dubs, im fucking tired of it. Not as if any of that ^ matters, cause its gunna stay the same still people stop buying the records, so stop buying them!

90degree 07-15-2003 03:45 PM

is anyone not tired of rap? heh.

darksparkles 07-16-2003 02:06 AM

i'm not that familiar with a lot of rap, mainly because most of the new mainstream rap is getting harder and harder to tell apart.
i adore snoop, tupac, dre, dj quik and suga free.

perripken 07-16-2003 08:05 AM

I've mentioned this before, and I'm going to say it again. I can't stand rap, but everyone has a right to their own opinion... hell, this is America. But..... my opinion on 50 cent is that he doesn't give a shit about his fans. He did a college concert recently here, showed up an hour and a half late for the show and only was on stage for 40 friggin minutes. That, my friend, is not quality! I've never been to a Rock and Roll show that didn't last at least 90 minutes. Shame on that butthead!

The big problem I think has been in the crossover between hip hop and R&B. To make it big as a rapper, you have to have this split personality: On the one hand, you have to be hard, smacking up bitches, flashing your bling, and leading the thug life. On the other hand, you have to whore yourself out to the pop world by doing duets with Ashanti, Beyonce or Mya.

Who among us didn't immediately lose all respect for Ja Rule, DMX, Jay-Z and countless others the second they put out what I call a "love rap"? Shit, Ja Rule has put out a whole album of them!

The hip hop I like comes from artists who take the standard stereotypes of hip hop lyrics and making them ironic or funny. Missy Elliot, Ludacris, Beastie Boys, etc.

monkeydriven 07-16-2003 11:25 AM

you nizzle to chilizzle fo' shizzle ma man.....

gibingus 07-16-2003 01:03 PM

aside from the issues brought forth already about how un-insipired the general topics of most rappers today (guns, beeyotches, money, bentleys, drugs, whathaveyou), the thing that really gets me down is the lack of originality in the backing tracks.

sampling was all the broohaha years ago when mchammer bootlegged james brown riffs and vanilla ice ripped off under pressure. today it is just accepted.

what really freaks me out though is when the representatives of aftrican american culture are sampling the beegees and led zepplin to use in their rap... i mean, granted they are at opposite ends of the musical spectrum, but you can't get more white than led zepplin and the beegees.

there is no originality in music anymore. for that, i blame the FCC ownership rules for radio stations.

Jesus Malverde 07-16-2003 01:38 PM

I think rap is doing pretty good right now. I agree that Eminem is a better rapper than 50 cent, and almost no one can rap faster than Busta Rhymes (except Twista and Krayzie Bone). I like the more agressive rap, like three 6 mafia, they never rap about "ice". Lil Flip only does freestyle, like I mean he goes in the recording booth and lays down his rhymes, and thats how they come out in the album. He's my favorite rapper, and as long as guys like him and Eminem and UGK and all the other freestylers are around I will still like rap. I dislike it when, as mentioned above, rappers come out with "love" raps. I hate jarule now, and I used to really like him. I guess it always comes down to whatever sells the most records.

GunslingerCold 07-16-2003 05:38 PM

Lil Flip and Del are the best rappers out right now. There songs actually have different lyrics in most of them which is more than nearly every popular rap artist can say. LIl Flip - Tonite is the best rap song Ive heard in quite a while.
Gangster rap was good in the earlier days when there was NWA or Tupac, Biggie, and Snoop. Now its lil bow wow talking about growing up rough because he didnt get his ferrari till he was 12.
Also, direct effect was good when it first came out because they would have battle raps and good artists but now its unwatchable. When bone crusher is one of their most played artists, its really a problem.

Soothe 07-16-2003 07:37 PM

Del and The Roots overrated? Whaaat?

clues_blues 07-17-2003 07:55 AM

i would have to say that black thought of the roots is completely underrated...

just my 2.

YaWhateva 07-17-2003 09:33 PM

I cant stand little kids like Lil' Bow Wow who wanna rap, or do hip hop or whatever. They anger me.

The only rap i really like is DMX and Eminem. And even them i dont really like either of them that much.

Slims 07-17-2003 09:50 PM

I am sick of all the little bastards that are running around my neighborhood trying to pretend that they live in a ghetto.

It's not the music that bothers me so much as many of the people who listen to it.

I don't know whether I should tell this story, but I will anyway:
When I was a junior in high school, my best friends younger brother (8'th grade, I think) started telling everybody to call him "Smoke Dawg." The next day after school I go over to my friends house, and he is out front spray painting a freshly cut sapling white. When I asked him what he was doing he said "I am going to beat the black out of him" and he proceeded to whip the snot out of his younger brother. About a week later, we went into his house and found his brother, and two of his brothers friends all splitting a single beer that they had stolen from somewhere, and laughing and joking about how drunk they all were (I shit you not). He went and got his stick again.

The story goes on like this...

Eventually, my friends brother started to drop the thug routing and not act like a complete dumbass. Coincidentally, my friend started to listen to rap.

blindside 07-17-2003 09:50 PM

im only sick of 'gangsta rap'

im a fan of del and hieroglyphics
outkast (old skool)
the roots
stuff like that

WhoaitsZ 07-18-2003 11:08 AM

like metal; turn your radio and mtv shit off.

my biggest bitch are the fucking 'LOOK MOM I GOT ELBOWS! HONEST!' shots in videos......... i dunno why but it bugs me.

and i am sick of these people with a five billion dollar tooth that proves, yes, i really am a fucking idiot.

if you have a story to tell, tell it. but if you live in the subburbs and then wish to talk about you hard ghetto liffe STFU.

for me, not being the biggest fan of rap but i don't hate it, i will stick with ATCQ, the roots and some older shit.

Magpie0001 07-19-2003 02:09 AM

PYRATE??? Where are you?

slunk007 07-19-2003 01:46 PM

I haven't listened to the radio or Much Music (I live in Canada) for quite some time. The main reason for not listening anymore was the fact that rap (and R&B) have completely consumed the mainstream music industry. I'm more of an alt-rock fan. I simply do not see enough VARIETY in mainstream media as there should be. When I turned on Much Music and all I saw was (c)rap or R&B being played all the time, i gave up and turned elsewhere.

Thank you internet!

Somebody let me know when it is safe to listen to the radio again please.

Glory's Sun 07-19-2003 05:34 PM

this is an easy question to answer. YES I'm tired of rap.. well umm I always have been always will be.
