Musical progression via YouTube
The premise is simple, post an original song from YouTube followed by various versions from its original artist or memorable/interesting/notable covers. Post the videos in chronological sequence (if known) and include trivia if possible.
Here's a start. A classic The original - 1958 Live - 1958 The Beatles Live at the BBC - 1964 Jimi Hendrix Live Elvis live Hawaii -1973 Peter Tosh live - 1983 Johnny Winter - 1984 Marty McFly and the Starlighters - 1985 Judas Priest - 1988 Jerry Lee Lewis and Friends - 1989 A more obscure song, but a very good one.......... The original version - 1964 the Moody Blues version - 1964 the original line up of the Moody Blues with Denny Laine (Wings) singing Denny singing with Wings - 1976 Ozzie - 2005 Simply Red - 2008 In this case the Moody Bues version was the hit, but clearly the orginal was a masterpiece. The other covers, well maybe not so much. Your turn..... Last edited by Craven Morehead; 03-21-2010 at 06:17 AM.. |

Baby Please don't go
Big Joe Williams originally recorded the song in 1935. This is an early 40s version. Lightning Hopkins and other blues artists covered the song in the 40s and 50s. Billy Lee Riley in 1957 Bob Dylan in 1962 This song wasn't released until 2005. Amboy Dukes covered the song in '67. Nugent still performs this song live. Them with Front man Van Morrison covering the song in a 1967 demo. The song changed a little on the Them In Reality Album from 1971 Budgie from 1973 ACDC covered the song on their High Voltage album in 1975. This is my favorite version. Muddy Waters covered the song in 1953, Here's a performance from 1979 Ray Charles in the late 70s, early 80s. Aerosmith's blues album from 2004 This is just a selective list of recordings of this great song.

Nice, All along the Watchtower is great in every form. To quote John Cleese, ...and now for something completely different. I think this song has evolved nicely over the years. I started out with some songs I liked more, then switched to songs with more popular covers but I just liked the way this one evolved and went in different directions.
George Michael's Careless Whisper -1985 Pedro Fernández sings it in spanish - Late 80s Tamia - 1998 Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright - 2004 The Gossip - 2007 The Lost Fingers - 2008 Seether - 2009

Who doesn't love Careless Whisper? The Gossip's version is pretty awesome, no surprise there, and The Seether video is perfect.
Just adding one more version of All Along the Watchtower, from the Battlestar Galactica soundtrack. (Musically, it makes a lot more sense in the context of the rest of BSG's music... it probably sounds really odd without that context )
