Just an album recommendation thread for albums that are really amazing but people probably don't own it. For instance, don't put "Man, you should totes buy Synchronicity by The Police!" [in fact don't ever put that. in any post. ever] Because even though Synchonicity is a solid album, half the world owns it.

So my albums are!!!

Twin Cinema - The New Pornographers [one of the most underrated albums of all time. I mean it was praised but it's an incredible collection of music]

Easy Tiger - Ryan Adams [his newest and, apparently, last solo release. I think, and don't shoot me, this is his best album. It's a collection of 13 incredibly written, phrased, and performed whiskey rock]

A Fever You Can't Sweat Out - Panic! At The Disco [Who knew that pop-punk/dance could actually be good?! This album is an incendiary mix of dance hall pop rock and vaudevillian disco rock. Really great hooks]

Rooney - Rooney [a great mix of pop rock and synth pop. Lots of great pop hooks]

Colin Hay - Going Somewhere
Colin Hay, aka that guy from Men At Work, has an awesome acoustic folk kind of sound. Songs like Waiting For My Real Life To Begin and Beautiful World are what make this album in particular stand out.

Ben Harper - Welcome to the Cruel World
I love this album. It covers a wide range, from what I consider to be a strong contender for most romantic song ever (Waiting On An Angel) to an almost Reel Big Fish level of irreverence (Mama's Got a Girlfriend Now).

The Allman Brothers Band - At Fillmore East
Anyone interested in classic rock ought to have this album. The 23 minute live jam of Whipping Post is possibly the longest track to ever get significant airplay. The amount of passion Gregg put into his vocals serves as an inspiration to me.

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
One thing I've always loved about Tom is that he's constantly reinventing himself. Rain Dogs has a very strong narrative, though, and contains what I consider to be some of his best lyrics.

Robert Randolph and the Family Band - Colorblind
Some of you may remember me raving about these guys after they completely stole Clapton's show last summer. It's just good tunes.

Pulp - Different Class
Ever wonder what brit pop was all about? Listen to this album and you will know.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Facing Future
A lot of people know his medley of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World. Other tracks I enjoy include White Sandy Beach of Hawaii and his cover of Take Me Home Country Road. A good album to put on and escape for a while when the weather outside turns cold and nasty.

I'm certain that "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" will be at least tied for the most beautiful song I've ever heard. I've never heard such an incredibly simple and perfectly captured image of that process as that song.

I don't want to turn this into a Colin Hay thread, but his lyrics are some of the best I've ever heard. That song made it hard to pick between Going Somewhere and Transcendental Highway, but overall I think I like Going Somewhere better.

I'll toss in "Mood Swing" by The Nails, released in 1984. You might remember the novelty single "88 Lines About 44 Women". But it is a great, moody album.

Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning

Post-Soundgarden and pre-Audioslave. His first attempt at a solo album didn't really sell, but I think it's great. It got lots of good reviews, but never caught on for some reason.

Truly funny, good tunes and yet unique IMO because it's a blast from the past....college and high school antics rolled into one gigantic salty home made pretzel.

Lots of people in North America surely own their album Urban Hymns, but in my mind, they're missing out. I feel sorry for all those people who think the Verve is only about "Bittersweet Symphony".

the first martin mull album!

the one with loser's samba on it--an all-time favorite. when i was in graduate school, i had a custom of putting that on during parties, when everyone was trashed. i still remember a verse from it:

Thanks for the flash back to a lot of laughs. I saw Martin do a One Man SHow in Dallas and he sang 'em all. He's such an underrated genius/comedian.

I paid 6 bucks for that album in high school. Never ventured past Blueside but that track is well worth the money. I'll give the rest of it a shot some day...




Nerd rap at it's finest. Nothing about guns and stardom but rather the struggles of being a starving artist and making music that will reach very few people and interest even less of those who hear it. And of course it's about women as well.

The last track on the album entitled Dope is probably the best rap song I've ever heard. Laced with latent meanings and double entendres, both artists liken their struggle and hunger as artists to a heroin addiction.

Genius.
