80's English Rock-Pop

I used to have an album from an English group I believe, circa mid-late 80's....I would describe the music as maybe more folk, than rock. Anyway I can't remember the groups name or album name, but I do remember one of the songs...it was a song about how to make a decent cup of tea...seemed the song made fun of the way Americans make tea, and then it described exactly how to 'pour the boiling water'over the tea....yada, yada......Does that sound familiar to ANYBODY? May be a shot in the dark but I was hoping someone would be familiar with it......thanks.

Was it "Cups and Cakes" from the Spinal Tap album?

markd4life 03-13-2009 02:57 AM

No, but thanks for the try...seems like maybe the album had a bicycle theme or a bicycle or something on the front cover...seems it was black and white.....or maybe it was the drugs back then...i dont know..wish i could remeber something else about it.

There's no song about tea that I can think of, but the rest fits...

Daniel you rock for trying thats for sure. Nope not it, damn good choice though.......no I am pretty sure the group that did it is pretty obscure....probably not even known here in the States, I was hoping somebody like you on the other side of the pond would be familiar with it....thanks keep trying...

Got any more hints?

Instrumentation?
Musical complexity?

Have some toast while you wait...

markd4life 03-14-2009 09:45 PM

Thanks for the toast. I really don't have any more clues...the only lyrics I can think of for sure is.......'take boiling hot water'...that song basically described how to make tea correctly....and they seemed to make fun of American tea...anyway its just one of those things that drive me crazy that I can't remember....cheers

So, technically, it was available in the 1980s...

(OK, I fess up, I thought it was 1980)

Tully Mars 03-15-2009 04:38 AM

I'll fess up I bought it when it came out. The poster alone was enough to motivate a HS freshman.

I could get you a song about making Ramen noodles ("Bring to Boil", by The Bobs), but that won't help.

I've also re-posted your question on a humor music forum, and I'll let you know if anything comes of that.

I'd never heard of this, which is sad, as I like Ginger Baker.

Given that the lyrics are:

Quote:

Now this is serious! If theres one thing in this country that really bothers me
Is the inability of Yanks to make a good cup of tea
Instructions are printed on the teabag
But either they can't read
Or they think it's a gag

Pour boiling water over the tea
How simple and clear can the instructions be?

They bring you a cup with a lemon slice
And an unopened tea bag beside it (How nice)
And a pot of water and it may be hot
But boiling it isn't so tea you have not

Why CAN'T we
Get our tea
We need tea
To set us free

It's boiling water that brings out tea's flavor
With a dash of milk you've a real brew to savor
They drink luke brown water that looks like gnat pee
And it's got nothing to do with a good cup of tea

Pour boiling water over the tea
How simple and clear
Can the instructions be?

Pour boiling water over the tea
Pour boiling water over the tea
I think it's exactly the right thing. Not 80s though. 1992.

markd4life 03-20-2009 11:19 PM

JUMPINJESUS! Thats it! Oh my God, damn that brings back memories....yeah I thought it was a 80's release, I think I found the album at a used record store in 93-94? I assumed it had been out for awhile, never checked production date.....I knew somebody would remember it. Thanks JumpinJesus, and thanks Daniel for your help.

My sources failed me, glad that JJ could get the answer for you.
