What he said

My daughter just started playing about a year ago and she has a guitar and a bass and she wants another. I want her to get better before she gets more. Although she's pretty good for only playing for that long imho.

Same with me. It also depends on what kind of guitars... like 5 classical guitars equal maybe one 12 string electric...

IMHO you have too many guitars if you need to pay other people to restring and tune them I have 5 (3 electrics, an acoustic and a bass). Haven't touched them in months though.. I really should play more (or at all!). I have my tele by my computer.. er.. maybe I should strum a chord or three.

I have 6:

1 Schecter
2 Ibanezes (WTF is the plural of Ibanez, anyway?)
2 Washburns (one is a bass)
1 Epiphone

And I want more... I don't have a seven string and I would really liek one. My wife thinks I am insane as well. And I need to get the BC Rich bodyart for August... as art, of course. Think of it this way.... you'd pay 500 for a nicely framed origional of ANYTHING, and a BC Rich is only what, $299? I have yet to make my wife see this logic.

I just have one American Fender Strat. It's had the same strings on it for about 4 years, and I fear that the neck is warped. The action is way too high. I don't play enough to pay someone to fix it though. Sigh.

It does look sharp though. It's an orange sunburst finish, and I replaced all of the white hardware with black.

arg. i only have a washburn acoustic. i don't play often. but every now and again i get the inkling to be more motivated again.. i want a classical guitar w/ the nylon strings. and an electric guitar and bass of some sort.. but then i hesitate bcos its an expensive hobby and i dont know what the point is when i'm not even in a band or anything.. but you have to start somewhere i guess. but i'm so fickle with my motivation >_<

I think it all depends on what you do with them. If you're a marginal player that doesn't even play that much, a couple might be too many. If you've got the money and can afford them, more power to you. If you're a musician and play them all, you really can have too many. At one point I had 9 Martins and 3 electrics, I play professionally, and I thought that was too much. So I cut it down to 2 electrics and 3 acoustics. Seems about right now.

Had an Ibanez Bass, and POS Hondo 3/4 size electric (but a great punk thrasher ). I traded the bass in for a Charvel acoustic/electric a couple weeks ago and I've been playing daily. I'm really glad I got back into it, but now I want a hollow body electric!

i just have a taylor dreadnought and a telecaster now. through the years there have been many that have come and gone, the ones i miss the most were an alpine white les paul and a highly customized heavy metal edition strat. now that i am not gigging any more, the need to have a lot of different sounding axes isn't so important.

it's easy to rationalize multiple acquizitions, since guitars are all so unique in sound, playability and feel. you need a twelve string, you have to have that double cutaway to reach the high frets, slide guitar just isn't the same unless you are playing on a dobro, the hollow body for that super clean sound, and nothing sounds like a rickenbacker.... if you aren't a heavy player/performer and are collecting for the sake of having them, one tell tale point of insanity is when you cross into the vintage realm. you've gone another point when you try to fill out the straight and want to own the mustang, jaguar, strat, tele, and jazzmaster or the royal flush of les paul, es335, flying v, explorer and emporer. if you are looking at cheap guitars, that's one thing, if you find yourself lusting after high-priced signature models, this is a clear sign of a dangerous condition.

but i personally think you've passed the point of reason when you are seriously considering buying a double-necked SG.

Gibsons make good guitars, but the thing is they're so overpriced. 2K for a Les Paul? Don't think so, I'd rather buy a PRS McCarty.

lol... I have two: 1 electric, 1 acoustic.

Acoustic is a Simon & Patrick Luthier (a good guitar for beginners like me). I love acoustic!

Electric was bought off a friend. It is a Cort guitar from the 70's and it is of those that are missing the tuning head (it happens to be on the body). It is old and the pickups have rust on them and the neck is not so good. Action is decent however.

When I graduate in December, I'm buying myself a new acoustic and it will definitely be an Ovation.

I am very jealous of all of you.

I am a little overstocked considering that I have always been a "living room guitar player".

Kramer strat (junker)
Les Paul studio (paid for a name but it sounds good)
Yamaha Acoustic
Esteve classical (secret favorite)
Applause elec/acous
mandolin

I would never sell any of them (well, maybe that Applause my wife bought me without asking, strings are too close together) and think I need at least a decent strat and someday maybe a high-end acoustic. It is alot of work to keep them strung up good, I sort of cycle through them over the years.

Let's see

One red vintage gibson hollow body (circa 1964)
One black goth Gibson SG
One black American Tele
One red Satch Ibanez
One blue Saber Ibanez (with many plastic flamingoes glued to surface)
One Yamaha acoustic
One pedal steel hauled back to Boston from Nashville
One Warlock bass

I guess that's eight. I'd better get on that...

I've got 2.75 guitars.

My Taylor 710 (spruce/rosewood) is the one I play. Not a bad guitar at all. I would so like a Bourgeois, though.

A Mexican tele... not bad sounding, but I'm mostly an acoustic player.

A 3/4 Airline acoustic. My dad had this when he was 10. The strings may have been changed once. But I learned to play on it, so it has sentimental value even if it does sound like a milk carton with strings.

And yeah... I think you can have too many guitars. If you have some that you don't play, then you have too many. That's not to say that you shouldn't hold on to that electric that no one has ever heard of and has a sound like nothing else that you haven't quite figured out a use for. Just don't let them collect dust. Spread the love!

I have two basses... An ibanez 6 stringer and a fender 4.

I don't need anything else.. there is nothing I can't do on those two that I can on another machine.

My guitarist has 12 at last count.. He doesn't even know exactly. That's when it gets to be too much.

He claims it is so he can have one for each tuning we *may* play in, but invariably it comes down to around three guitars which he continually changes the tuning in.

Annoying.
