how many guitars is too many
Ok players my Wife thinks Ive flipped out how many people have multiple guitars and how many do you have. Like AA I guess I'll admit to 14
3 strats 2 tele's 2 Ovations 1 Washburn 1 Gretsch 1 a BC Rich bodyart (wall hanging) 1 gibson les paul 1 gibson L6-s custom 1 fender speedster travel guitar and a ovation Mandolin which she counts as a guitar even if I dont |
i say keep it proportional to your skills...
for example, i have 3... though that's probably too many ;) |
You can NEVER have too many guitars.

My daughter just started playing about a year ago and she has a guitar and a bass and she wants another. I want her to get better before she gets more. Although she's pretty good for only playing for that long imho. |
I have one, and its directly proportional to my skill...

Thanks for your input the skill argument is a good angle ive played for 22 years so ????
|
I've got 2 basses and 3 guitars.
Fender P-Bass Fender J-Bass (My current baby) Danelectro acoustic/electric (My first guitar) Strat A plastic elmo guitar |
Mine got stolen recently :(
|
I've got one, although proportionally to my skills, I probably shouldn't own a guitar at all.
|
IMHO you have too many guitars if you need to pay other people to restring and tune them :D I have 5 (3 electrics, an acoustic and a bass). Haven't touched them in months though.. I really should play more (or at all!). I have my tele by my computer.. er.. maybe I should strum a chord or three.
|
I think your problem isn't too many guitars, it is the fact that you need more Gibsons!!!!
|
I have 6:
1 Schecter 2 Ibanezes (WTF is the plural of Ibanez, anyway?) 2 Washburns (one is a bass) 1 Epiphone And I want more... I don't have a seven string and I would really liek one. My wife thinks I am insane as well. And I need to get the BC Rich bodyart for August... as art, of course. Think of it this way.... you'd pay 500 for a nicely framed origional of ANYTHING, and a BC Rich is only what, $299? I have yet to make my wife see this logic. :) |
I just have one American Fender Strat. It's had the same strings on it for about 4 years, and I fear that the neck is warped. The action is way too high. I don't play enough to pay someone to fix it though. Sigh.
It does look sharp though. It's an orange sunburst finish, and I replaced all of the white hardware with black. |
arg. i only have a washburn acoustic. i don't play often. but every now and again i get the inkling to be more motivated again.. i want a classical guitar w/ the nylon strings. and an electric guitar and bass of some sort.. but then i hesitate bcos its an expensive hobby and i dont know what the point is when i'm not even in a band or anything.. but you have to start somewhere i guess. but i'm so fickle with my motivation >_<
|
I think it all depends on what you do with them. If you're a marginal player that doesn't even play that much, a couple might be too many. If you've got the money and can afford them, more power to you. If you're a musician and play them all, you really can have too many. At one point I had 9 Martins and 3 electrics, I play professionally, and I thought that was too much. So I cut it down to 2 electrics and 3 acoustics. Seems about right now.
|
Had an Ibanez Bass, and POS Hondo 3/4 size electric (but a great punk thrasher :D). I traded the bass in for a Charvel acoustic/electric a couple weeks ago and I've been playing daily. I'm really glad I got back into it, but now I want a hollow body electric!
|
i have 3, 2 guitars and a bass.
a dean, a cheapo guitar that i painted orange and a squier p-bass |
When you start buying semi hollows for the fun of it is when it gets out of hand. :)

it's never too many :)
|
I have 3, a 1970 no-name classical acoustic, an OKAY Ibanez Talman, my starter guitar. I now have an American Strat, although I want a Gibson Explorer :) I need more power!
|
i just have a taylor dreadnought and a telecaster now. through the years there have been many that have come and gone, the ones i miss the most were an alpine white les paul and a highly customized heavy metal edition strat. now that i am not gigging any more, the need to have a lot of different sounding axes isn't so important.
it's easy to rationalize multiple acquizitions, since guitars are all so unique in sound, playability and feel. you need a twelve string, you have to have that double cutaway to reach the high frets, slide guitar just isn't the same unless you are playing on a dobro, the hollow body for that super clean sound, and nothing sounds like a rickenbacker.... if you aren't a heavy player/performer and are collecting for the sake of having them, one tell tale point of insanity is when you cross into the vintage realm. you've gone another point when you try to fill out the straight and want to own the mustang, jaguar, strat, tele, and jazzmaster or the royal flush of les paul, es335, flying v, explorer and emporer. if you are looking at cheap guitars, that's one thing, if you find yourself lusting after high-priced signature models, this is a clear sign of a dangerous condition. but i personally think you've passed the point of reason when you are seriously considering buying a double-necked SG. |

My mom complains that there are to many in the house but my dad highly disagree
List of guitars in the house. Mine Homemade strat style one of mine....my baby My Strat Squier that I hotrodded to hell. My brothers His Ibanez ...($500 guitar he got for $200) Schecter 7 string got it for cheap cause of a gouge in the body Old 80's gibson. Has a weird compress sawdust body....looks like a les paul Schecter C-1+ beatiful guitar.....looks just like jerry hortons but flame body. My dads Epiphone acoustic jumbo body guitar. 1977 Fender Jazz Bass hotrodded and almost unplayable due to wore out frets. ESP bass...can't remember the type. Carvin 5 string...decked out to beat hell. |
lol... I have two: 1 electric, 1 acoustic.
Acoustic is a Simon & Patrick Luthier (a good guitar for beginners like me). I love acoustic! Electric was bought off a friend. It is a Cort guitar from the 70's and it is of those that are missing the tuning head (it happens to be on the body). It is old and the pickups have rust on them and the neck is not so good. Action is decent however. When I graduate in December, I'm buying myself a new acoustic and it will definitely be an Ovation. I am very jealous of all of you. |
I am a little overstocked considering that I have always been a "living room guitar player".
Kramer strat (junker) Les Paul studio (paid for a name but it sounds good) Yamaha Acoustic Esteve classical (secret favorite) Applause elec/acous mandolin I would never sell any of them (well, maybe that Applause my wife bought me without asking, strings are too close together) and think I need at least a decent strat and someday maybe a high-end acoustic. It is alot of work to keep them strung up good, I sort of cycle through them over the years. |
Let's see
One red vintage gibson hollow body (circa 1964) One black goth Gibson SG One black American Tele One red Satch Ibanez One blue Saber Ibanez (with many plastic flamingoes glued to surface) One Yamaha acoustic One pedal steel hauled back to Boston from Nashville One Warlock bass I guess that's eight. I'd better get on that... |
I've got 2.75 guitars.
My Taylor 710 (spruce/rosewood) is the one I play. Not a bad guitar at all. I would so like a Bourgeois, though. A Mexican tele... not bad sounding, but I'm mostly an acoustic player. A 3/4 Airline acoustic. My dad had this when he was 10. The strings may have been changed once. But I learned to play on it, so it has sentimental value even if it does sound like a milk carton with strings. :D And yeah... I think you can have too many guitars. If you have some that you don't play, then you have too many. That's not to say that you shouldn't hold on to that electric that no one has ever heard of and has a sound like nothing else that you haven't quite figured out a use for. Just don't let them collect dust. Spread the love! |
I've got "only" 4 Guitars.
1 Strat 1 Gibson Marauder 1 Yamaha Pacifica 1 Washburn acoustic. Does it for me, allthough I'm thirsting for a Gibson SG Classic! |
I have two basses... An ibanez 6 stringer and a fender 4.
I don't need anything else.. there is nothing I can't do on those two that I can on another machine. My guitarist has 12 at last count.. He doesn't even know exactly. That's when it gets to be too much. He claims it is so he can have one for each tuning we *may* play in, but invariably it comes down to around three guitars which he continually changes the tuning in. Annoying. |
2 basses 2 guitars would be 3 of each but my acoustic and my first bass met my friend tragedy and are no more
|
i'm still living with my parents, and collectively we have an acoustic, two electrics [danelectro heresay and an esp, not sure what model], an electric bass [yamaha, not sure what model] and an acoustic bass [not stand-up]. only the esp is soley mine, but i still get lots and lots of shit about having more guitars than most of my friends.
|
yep, it's final! im buying another guitar. a Dean Time Capsule ML (i might even get it custom, we'll see)!!!
|
I have an Ibanez 12 string, A classical Takamine(ea60c with a tap plate installed) a couple no named junkers and my love a Shelton Farretta blanca. I will admit the Ibanez deserves a better life but it breaks my fingernails. And, I dont think you can have too many guitars cause if you do you can call yourself an antique collector.
|
3-5 is probably enough, as long as you like them
|
Main: '75 Gibson Les Paul Custom (so awesome, there aren't enough words...)
backup: some SG copy Ol' Slidey: some high volume, high-strung copy of a copy Oh, and a classical that laughs at me when I play it. Stupid log. Some of you got me drooling a little. |
Not to start a flamewar, but you can get more tone out of a Hamer than todays Gibsons. I have 6 guitars a bass and a banjo. Some people own 3 houses. Is that too many? Depends on what you think.-
|
too many guitars?
i live for new guitars, you can never have too many!
|
I have
-a toneless acoustic (My first guitar) -a Yamaha Pacifica electric (Nice guitar but I never play it) -an Ozark electro-acoustic (Just bought it last week and for £250 it's got an absolutely gorgeous sound And I'm looking to learn the banjo and mandolin and maybe pick up a 12-string in the next year or two. I don't think you can have too many guitars as long as there's a significant difference in quality between new ones and the most recent ones. |
It depends on how hungry you are.
|
I have a cheapo bass that I need to learn how to play.
I'd love to have a 5- string Fender Stu Hamm Urge II. someday.... Either that, or an upright bass So I can pretend I'm Jimbo Wallace... :) |
I only have one Martin acoustic. I had an Electra- Gibson Les Paul copy back in the 80's, but lost that due to a nasty nose candy habit. Man... what a waste! I would like to get a real Les Paul someday, and maybe an SG. And as for the proportional idea... I shouldn't even own a guitar either!
|
no such thing as too many of ANY musical instrument. Each one is different and suits a different style of playing.
For myself I have an electric 6 string, a bass, a takamini classical (my favorite by FAR), and a backpacker's guitar for camping trips. I still haven't figured out how they can cut like, 90% of the guitar's body away and still make it sound good. |
too many guitars ... hmm ... only if there's so many that you have to move out of your house into the shed, maybe not even then if it's a nice shed
|
can never have to many. GAS (gear/guitar acquisition syndrome) hits everybody. and it hits them hard. guitars are like kids. and they don't stink up the joint.
here's a favour... one of the places that i frequent (sort of my current internet-home) is www.guitar.com a great resource for guitarists or enthusiasts alike of any skill level. Great forums with some really helpful people, and if your in for a good old fashion flame-fest, filled with assholes, controversy, photoshop fun, and generally a l33t good time, swing by the Misc section of Guitar.com, but watch out ;) |
Started out with a Peavy Indianola Accoustic
Then moved to a Squire double fat strat Now I've got an Art & Luthrie accoustic (made in Canada, not a bad guitar for $340) and my girlfriend gave me her squire strat since mine went to shit. My friend has a Baby Taylor that he never plays, so I'm thinking of stealing it one day. A fine instrument like that deserves to be played. |
do it, baby taylors are really sweet.
|
Well after playing for 22 years you have the right to buy as many guitars as you want. For my two years of experiance I have this OLD OLD ASS Harmony no name and I have no clue where I got it from and I just bough an '84 vintage Tokai Silver Star off ebay. Still waiting for it to arrive from Japan. One guitar for every year you play I guess.
|
i love harmonies and i love crazy japanese guitars. way cool stuff.
|
i have one electric guitar but i want more. so i am jelouse. u better be puting them to good use
|
interesting thread--i cant tell if it makes me happier to be a pianist or not....
|
You have too many when you have to pick them up to walk, or you have to start stacking them in storage. You're a guitar addict when you miss work to play, or if you buy a new one instead of making a mortgage payment.
|
or if an avalanche of your stacked guitars crushes you to death ... although that might make a good sound if you tuned em to strange chords first ... anyone?
|
To many is when you have to go out of your way to play all of them once in a while.
*Edit* I have a Tele |
