Not to start a flamewar, but you can get more tone out of a Hamer than todays Gibsons. I have 6 guitars a bass and a banjo. Some people own 3 houses. Is that too many? Depends on what you think.-

Crazy

I have
-a toneless acoustic (My first guitar)
-a Yamaha Pacifica electric (Nice guitar but I never play it)
-an Ozark electro-acoustic (Just bought it last week and for £250 it's got an absolutely gorgeous sound
And I'm looking to learn the banjo and mandolin and maybe pick up a 12-string in the next year or two.
I don't think you can have too many guitars as long as there's a significant difference in quality between new ones and the most recent ones.

I have a cheapo bass that I need to learn how to play.

I'd love to have a 5- string Fender Stu Hamm Urge II. someday....
Either that, or an upright bass So I can pretend I'm Jimbo Wallace...

I only have one Martin acoustic. I had an Electra- Gibson Les Paul copy back in the 80's, but lost that due to a nasty nose candy habit. Man... what a waste! I would like to get a real Les Paul someday, and maybe an SG. And as for the proportional idea... I shouldn't even own a guitar either!

no such thing as too many of ANY musical instrument. Each one is different and suits a different style of playing.

For myself I have an electric 6 string, a bass, a takamini classical (my favorite by FAR), and a backpacker's guitar for camping trips. I still haven't figured out how they can cut like, 90% of the guitar's body away and still make it sound good.

too many guitars ... hmm ... only if there's so many that you have to move out of your house into the shed, maybe not even then if it's a nice shed

can never have to many. GAS (gear/guitar acquisition syndrome) hits everybody. and it hits them hard. guitars are like kids. and they don't stink up the joint.

here's a favour...

one of the places that i frequent (sort of my current internet-home) is www.guitar.com a great resource for guitarists or enthusiasts alike of any skill level. Great forums with some really helpful people, and if your in for a good old fashion flame-fest, filled with assholes, controversy, photoshop fun, and generally a l33t good time, swing by the Misc section of Guitar.com, but watch out

Started out with a Peavy Indianola Accoustic

Then moved to a Squire double fat strat

Now I've got an Art & Luthrie accoustic (made in Canada, not a bad guitar for $340) and my girlfriend gave me her squire strat since mine went to shit.

My friend has a Baby Taylor that he never plays, so I'm thinking of stealing it one day. A fine instrument like that deserves to be played.

Well after playing for 22 years you have the right to buy as many guitars as you want. For my two years of experiance I have this OLD OLD ASS Harmony no name and I have no clue where I got it from and I just bough an '84 vintage Tokai Silver Star off ebay. Still waiting for it to arrive from Japan. One guitar for every year you play I guess.

You have too many when you have to pick them up to walk, or you have to start stacking them in storage. You're a guitar addict when you miss work to play, or if you buy a new one instead of making a mortgage payment.

or if an avalanche of your stacked guitars crushes you to death ... although that might make a good sound if you tuned em to strange chords first ... anyone?
