Fans of Southern Rock/Americana/Indie Country Unite!
This "genre" (loose as it is) is probably where I spend most of my time musically these days. There seems to be a dearth of good straight up rock music these days, but the indie country/southern rock scene is exploding. The roots of the genre also take up a good deal of my time.
Current favorite bands in the genre: Drive-By Truckers Blue Mountain Neil Young & Crazy Horse Bright Eyes Split Lip Rayfield Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit North Mississippi All-Stars The Dexateens and then, floating around the edges of the genre, are bands like My Morning Jacket, The Black Keys, The Whigs, Son Volt, etc. The next bands I want to get into are Uncle Tupelo/Wilco |

Drive By Truckers, fuck yeah.
![]() Thank you for the list--I know a few of those, but am always interested in getting to know more. Good to hear that there are other Truckers fans around here.

If you like Son Volt - especially given the fact that they effectively peaked with the first song on their first album - you'll love Uncle Tupelo. That's not a slam on SV, just that this particular song is that amazing.
Wilco will take longer to get into since they don't really believe in radio-friendly songs, but they're pretty damn good. "She's A Jar" is a favorite. Personally, I've been getting into The Old 97's (early stuff), The Bottlerockets and Reverend Horton Heat, which I think all qualify here. I'm going to have to give some of these others a listen.

Bright Eyes is probably about as far into the genre as I can go and I'm really not a fan of his last album. It's too country for my tastes and it seems the better a musician he becomes the less interesting his music becomes.
Carry on.

you know, some might take serious offense to associating neil young with southern rock...
![]() if you've never listened, you should check out Billy Bob Thornton's group the Boxmasters, funny stuff. p.s. this discussion can't be had without mention of Willie. ![]()

What, no Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Georgia Satellites, .38 Special, Marshall Tucker, ZZTop?
Neil Young isn't southern rock. He's California rock, ala The Eagles. Southern Rock makes you want to drive fast on an interstate while playing air guitar on the side of your seat. Neil Young makes you wanna hold up a protest sign.....

Anyone who wants to see a great southern rock/blues/etc event would be wise in going to the Wanee music festival in Live Oaks Florida. I made the trek down there from NJ last year and plan on doing the same this year. Lots of old and new bands get together down there. Nothing like listening to Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi at 2 AM on the mushroom stage
