M83 - Electronica - 'shoegaze' music

I went out to a bar this weekend and the DJ played this song, that I loved.

I liked it so much that I had to ask who the band was.

She told me it was M83.

I had never heard of them but have since heard a few of their songs and am pleasantly surprised. The band is of French origin and started in 2001.

The music is electronica with a heavy use of effects (sometimes called computer pop) and apparently it falls into the genre "shoegaze" music. It's an unfortunate label because it comes from the fact that these kinds of bands, originating in the UK, often have a motionless performing style, and gaze at their shoes. The music uses a lot of synthesizers and '80's style sounds but in a contemporary way I'd say.

Even so, I like their sound and thought I'd share. If you know any other interesting bands in this style, please share with us too.

Here it is, the specific song I heard was Skin of the Night, by M83:

Edit - lyrics as an afterthought, because they are like poetry:

Like a moth she moves to the red light
Her blood warms and boils there
She skims the sweat like a new milk
And pops the buttons off her wet blouse

Oh Queen of the Night!
Well she is deep inside!
She is haunting me!
(All of her soft parts call to me
She could be mine)

She digs her nails into her naked chest
Miles of veins fan out like a road map
She pulls back the skin to show her ribs
That twinkle like shooting stars.

Whether we write or speak or do but look
We are ever unapparent. What we are
Cannot be transfused into word or book.
Our soul from us is infinitely far.
However much we give our thoughts the will
To be our soul and gesture it abroad,
Our hearts are incommunicable still.
In what we show ourselves we are ignored.
The abyss from soul to soul cannot be bridged
By any skill of thought or trick of seeming.
Unto our very selves we are abridged
When we would utter to our thought our being.
We are our dreams of ourselves, souls by gleams,
And each to each other dreams of others' dreams.

I got a copy of their album "Before The Dawn Heals Us" from a friend of mine after hearing it at his house. I like that album, but I don't know anything else by them...

I may have to look in to getting more of their stuff, now that you've made me think of it.

You will probably also like:

Mum
Efterklang
Ulrich Schnauss
Low In the Sky

and only vaguely similar, but everyone loves The Flashbulb

also The Postal Service kind of falls into the description you gave, however the producer of that music (who should get way more credit than that singer guy from that band), is Dntel, who sounds somewhat similar to the song you posted, sometimes.
Ratatat sounds nothing like Dntel, but a lot like a lot of M83.
Copy is a better version of Ratatat but not as popular.
Air (also from France) can be mixed well with M83.

All of this music is better than M83, I promise.

I am PulpMind on SoulSeek, if you use it.

Dead Cities, Red Seas, & Lost Ghosts is an amazing album especially to put on while you're doing work.

I haven't heard much of their new stuff but I've been told its good.

I'd really recommend Mum as well (note there is an accent on the u), I saw them live and they were amazing.

I have Before The Dawn Heals Us and Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. They are ok for me when I want something off the wall from my usual listening..

I think I came into knowledge of them from the Rescue Me intro and the Pontiac commercials.
