There are precious few genuinely affecting love songs out there.
Derek And The Dominos - Bell Bottom Blues (less overexposed compared to Layla) George Harrison - If Not For You (way better than the Dylan version) Bob Dylan - Sad-Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands (possibly the best love song ever) Yeah, I'm in an oldies kind of mood. |

Half of all country songs known to man.
The other half are about the opposite, heartbreak. I'm very sure you don't want any country, but just in case, I'll list some anyway: It's Your Love-Tim McGraw When You Say Nothing at All- Allison Kraus Austin- Blake Shelton and the TWO best Country love songs, by THE best Country artist: Carried Away Unconditional by George Strait |
From Autumn To Ashes - "Short Stories with Tragic Endings"
Poison The Well - "Parks and What You Meant to Me" In Pieces - "The Anchor", "Your Switch to the Sun", and "A Mistake I'd Make Again" --not love songs in the traditional sense, very abstract, but if you get into the lyrics and hear the emotion, its there. Led Zepplin - "All of My Love" more traditional type love song. |
D'Angelo - Untitled (How Does It Feel)
|

Nirvana - Heart Shaped Box Pearl Jam - Last Kiss (Cover) Red Hot Chili Peppers - I Could Have Lied Stone Temple Pilots - Sour Girl Sublime - Santeria Foo Fighters - Everlong (Can't Believe no one said this song yet) Limp Bizkit - Hold On Led Zepplin - Thank You |
Cool topic... it's harder than it looks cause a good love song should have both the lyrics and the music to go with it. I therefore choose as my number one, Paul McDermont's cover of a Hunters & Collectors, Throw Your Arms Around Me. Of note, it was purely lyrics, sabra cadabra and 16th Floor would tie for first. Here then is my list in order I think of them...
Pau Kelly - 16th Floor Black Sabbath - Sabra Cadabra Paul McDermont - Throw Your Arms Around Me The Beatles - Hey You've Got To Hide Your Love Away Jeff Buckley - You Should've Come Over Bob Dylan - Tangled Up In Blue Smashing Pumpkins - Said Sadly Dire Straits - Water Of Love Dire Straits - Romeo And Juliet Hmmmm That'll do donkey, that'l do (If you get this joke, you have seen Shrek too many times and/or are a toonphile) |
For me, it's "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye. Having said that, I have the urge to state that "High Fidelity" was a great film, and the original book by Nick Hornby was a great... well, love book, so to speak.
|
I Let Love In - Nick Cave.
|
Nirvana-Heart Shaped Box
Led Zeppelin-Whole Lotta Love Three Dog Night-One Iron Butterfly-In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida :D:D:D Something about a 8 minute drum solo is cool to me. Damn, reading this thread made me dig out the old vinyl. I'm listening to "Solsbury Hill" by Peter Gabriel right now, And I'll break out Zep 1, 2, 3, 4, and Iron Butterfly later. Anybody who tells you a CD sounds better than a LP that is cleaned properly and played on a good turntable needs to be shot. |

Unless you're being sarcastic - but you never can tell... |
The Beach Boys "Gog Only Knows"
The most realistic love song EVER written. I may not always love you But as long as there are stars above you There'll be no need to doubt it I'll make you so sure about it. God only knows what I'd be with you. If you should ever leave me Though life would still go on, believe me The world could show nothing to me So what good would living do me? God only knows what I'd be without you. |
Beauty Queen-Roxy Music
|
no one has mentioned:
0) Smoke Gets in Your Eyes - The Platters 1) A large portion of the songs that Big Crosby made famous 2) Darling Je Vous Aime Beacoup - Nat Cole is my favourite version 3) More than a few Sinatra songs 4) Bei mir bist du shoen - Andrew Sisters and I could name many more with a bit of thought from the 1910-1950 range. |
The song "Lovesong" by the Cure. Not only is love song in the title, but the lyrics are just something to behold. They just speak of such love. Robert Smith even wrote the song as a wedding present to his wife, as he said "Yeah, it was cause me 'n' Mary got married last year and I couldn't think of what to give her, for a wedding present (laughs), so I wrote her that song... cheap and cheerful... she would've preferred diamonds, I think, but... I dunno... she might look back and be glad that I gave her that. "

Cowboy Junkies: To love is to Bury
Bono: Can't Help Falling in love with You Waterboys: A man is in love "To love is to bury" is by far the most beautiful song about love that i know. The Bono cover of "Can't Help Falling in love with You", might be a tad controversial but damn it is beautiful too... "A man is in love" is a simple catchy little song with a nice, if predictable, punchline... If "To love is to bury" is a "downer", then "A man is in love" is a definate "upper" :) |
Everlong, of course.
"And so it goes" by billy joel, more a song about remorse in love, but it's still utterly beautiful "The way you look tonight" by Frank Sinatra, it's romantic and moving with slipping into a kind of sappiness. "Sarah Brown Eyes" from the musical Ragtime, i know, not the kind of music we're really talking about, but still one hell of a love song there are more, but none are coming |
Can't believe nobody mentioned this....
Beatles - Yesterday Guns N' Roses - November Rain Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing |
A lot of you people are NOT putting love songs you're putting songs of love lost (You've lost that loving feeling) soft songs that aren't really loves songs (2 out 3 ain't bad) songs that say "Lets make love" but aren't love songs (Lets Get It On) and some are just ridiculous. Whole different kinda love song all together...movin on Tracy Chapman - Baby Can I Hold You Tonight Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels can't forget broadway eh?:D All I Ask Of You frm The Phantom Of The Opera Bush - Letting The Cables Sleep Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around And Fell In Love The Everly Brothers - All I Have To Do Is Dream The Five Satins - In The Still Of The Night John Denver - Annie's Song Paul Anka - Put your head on my shoulder Connie Frances - Where The Boys Are The Chi-Lites - Oh Girl Starship - Nothings gonna stop us Foreigner - I Wanna Know What Love Is Franki Valli - My Eyes Adored You I'm beat....me n moms can't think of anymore.
