There are precious few genuinely affecting love songs out there.
Derek And The Dominos - Bell Bottom Blues (less overexposed compared to Layla) George Harrison - If Not For You (way better than the Dylan version) Bob Dylan - Sad-Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands (possibly the best love song ever) Yeah, I'm in an oldies kind of mood.

Half of all country songs known to man.
The other half are about the opposite, heartbreak. I'm very sure you don't want any country, but just in case, I'll list some anyway: It's Your Love-Tim McGraw When You Say Nothing at All- Allison Kraus Austin- Blake Shelton and the TWO best Country love songs, by THE best Country artist: Carried Away Unconditional by George Strait

From Autumn To Ashes - "Short Stories with Tragic Endings"
Poison The Well - "Parks and What You Meant to Me" In Pieces - "The Anchor", "Your Switch to the Sun", and "A Mistake I'd Make Again" --not love songs in the traditional sense, very abstract, but if you get into the lyrics and hear the emotion, its there. Led Zepplin - "All of My Love" more traditional type love song.

Cool topic... it's harder than it looks cause a good love song should have both the lyrics and the music to go with it. I therefore choose as my number one, Paul McDermont's cover of a Hunters & Collectors, Throw Your Arms Around Me. Of note, it was purely lyrics, sabra cadabra and 16th Floor would tie for first. Here then is my list in order I think of them...
Pau Kelly - 16th Floor Black Sabbath - Sabra Cadabra Paul McDermont - Throw Your Arms Around Me The Beatles - Hey You've Got To Hide Your Love Away Jeff Buckley - You Should've Come Over Bob Dylan - Tangled Up In Blue Smashing Pumpkins - Said Sadly Dire Straits - Water Of Love Dire Straits - Romeo And Juliet Hmmmm That'll do donkey, that'l do (If you get this joke, you have seen Shrek too many times and/or are a toonphile) |

Nirvana-Heart Shaped Box
Led Zeppelin-Whole Lotta Love Three Dog Night-One Iron Butterfly-In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida Something about a 8 minute drum solo is cool to me. Damn, reading this thread made me dig out the old vinyl. I'm listening to "Solsbury Hill" by Peter Gabriel right now, And I'll break out Zep 1, 2, 3, 4, and Iron Butterfly later. Anybody who tells you a CD sounds better than a LP that is cleaned properly and played on a good turntable needs to be shot. |
