I love the 80s: Music and Videos

Find and post a link/embed to some 80s music.

Minor Threat- Straight Edge

The Descendents- Hope

The 80's were a very good time for punk I'd say.

I completely agree! Since your link is broken, lets try this one because it needs to be in this thread! lol

I just found out that your video isn't broken, it just doesn't work in Canada so this video is for all the Canucks lol

i think this is one of the great political poems/tracks ever.

gil scott-heron: b-movie

he saw all of it.
all of it.
the record came out in 1981.
by the end of the decade, he wasn't on a record label any more.

fela saw it too, but from a different place, one where avoidance was harder to pull off.
this came out in 1977 but i only heard it in around 1983.

fela anikulapo kuti and afrika 70: colonial mentality (excerpt)

the cut-off is brutal.
but so's everything else.

art ensemble of chicago: theme de yoyo

this is from 1969, but again it only drifted into my world in the early 1980s.
i saw them in 1978.
that show altered everything--i've never been the same as i was before that.
i worked my way into their stuff bit by bit.
this is awesome.

not all dreamtime is retrograde tho.

chameleons uk.
monkeyland

don't fall (live)

meanwhile, somewhere else entirely:

model 500: night drive through babylon

And a sexy man, sexy riff:

Meditrina 08-05-2008 06:27 PM

There are way too many to choose from.
This one stands out in my mind.

here we go:

(hahaha...)

ngdawg 08-05-2008 07:18 PM

That one, along with "True" and "Sweet Dreams" had to be among the most inane tunes of the decade.

Queen FTW!

I knew it would provoke!

mixedmedia 08-06-2008 03:11 AM

some of my favorite '80s bands...some of the few I still listen to:

X

Violent Femmes

Gang of Four

ngdawg 08-06-2008 07:06 AM

Open the windows, crank up the speakers and keep it under 120 :)

Redlemon 08-06-2008 07:30 AM

I am quite impressed at the restraint of TFP members. This is a thread where one could legitimately post Rick Astley singing "Never Gonna Give You Up", and it wouldn't be a Rickroll. But no one has, and I thank you all for that.

Nothing says 80's to me like
Diamond Dave.

snowy 08-06-2008 09:14 AM

How about some of Neil Finn's work from the 80s:

From 1980:
Split Enz: "I Got You"

From 1984:
Split Enz: "Message to My Girl"

From 1986:
Crowded House: "Don't Dream Its Over"

From 1988:
Crowded House: "Better Be Home Soon" (my personal favorite)

Poppinjay 08-06-2008 09:23 AM

That reminded me of one of the more interesting vids of 1987. You can clearly see the band members are barely trying to mimic singing the lyrics.

The hair. I'd kill for that hair. I wouldn't style it like that, but I'd like to have it.

Hahaha...and they all look so HAPPY. How bizarre. But great pick nonetheless--I love that song.

ngdawg 08-06-2008 09:58 AM

Looks more like a music to visual synch problem, but a in lot of these videos, their lypsynching leaves something to be desired.

CinnamonGirl 08-06-2008 11:00 AM

How much do I love this thread? sooooo much. :D

And a little more bubblegum:

(never mind, got it to work.)

Somebody had to do it:

Beastie Boys - Brass Monkey

ngdawg 08-06-2008 03:58 PM

Is it my imagination or were the 80's the most prolific decade of music ever?
from 1980:

to 1989:

roachboy 08-06-2008 04:21 PM

george clinton:

do fries go with that shake?

some late 80s hip hop:

mixedmedia 08-06-2008 04:31 PM

These were fun:

The Specials

Madness

The English Beat

Nikilidstrom 08-06-2008 06:15 PM

I can't believe nobody posted the song that launched MTV

And here are a few of my favs:

Tom Petty

Simple Minds

Duran Duran

Nena

Men Without Hats

sorry if this is overkill, but this is the greatest freakin thread EVER :)

ngdawg 08-06-2008 06:58 PM

I was IN LOVE with Boy George

Love the make-up in this:

Check out "Edward Scissorhands" on guitar

mixedmedia 08-06-2008 07:01 PM

awww, they won't let you play the PE video, rb...

It's next to impossible to find embeddable PE videos on YouTube.

The '80s was also the heydey of the...Quiet Storm. :p

I know it's corny, but I love Luther Vandross...but whatever your own opinion of his music, he was a sophisticated master vocalist. A rarity in this day and age. As is evidenced by this live clip. So many people try to pretend, and make fools out of themselves.

I love Luther. :hearts:

I first saw the vid at a radio station I worked at in the early 90's. The band members were clearly talking smack to each other, for instance, when the bassist appears to be signing "something so strong" when he didn't even sing on that song, the drummer too.

This has to be one of my all-time favorite 80's tunes! Thanks! I'm about to wear this thing out (the video, I mean) :D

Poppinjay 08-07-2008 06:14 AM

Here's one for fans of M&M's. The The.

This was made three years before Avid was introduced, so that means they producers probably used time lapse photography for some scenes. It must have taken forever.

And another 80's song that made a comback, thanks to Listerine:

Sounds like the ad producers speeded up the music about 3.5.

ngdawg 08-07-2008 06:44 AM

Our introduction to Aimee Mann:

Too bad their follow-up didn't have the same impact:

Nice. Colin Hay's more recent accoustic version of that song is great too.

Poppinjay 08-07-2008 09:12 AM

Aimee Mann vids not available, booo. I was looking forward to getting my mann on.

That sounds gay.

CinnamonGirl 08-07-2008 09:47 AM

Grrr...never mind. Was trying to make Aimee Mann suddenly appear :(

Cynthetiq 08-07-2008 09:59 AM

actually it's a bug with youtube embedding. I don't know why or how to fix it, but it's on the youtube side.

you can click the vid to take you to youtube and it will play there.

CinnamonGirl 08-07-2008 10:28 AM

Seriously, I can't stay away from this. :D

the Cars - Tonight She Comes

Going to see these guys in a couple weeks:
