Oh, Cynthetiq, I'm so glad you posted this one. I still play McLaren's versions of Madame Butterfly and Carmen to my music appreciation classes each semester.
|
It's a personal favorite of mine. I even remember the first time I heard it and thought it was one of the most incredible pieces of music I had ever heard. He made the original mashup... I don't think I ever heard Carmen, I'll have to play that later today.

Oh by the way, this is good in all the ways that Peter Gabriel's Shock the Monkey & Sledgehammer sucked. How can Jeux sans Frontiers and those tunes come from the same person? |
Wow, what a great thread:
Warrreagle: Sledgehammer…Shock the Monkey , Rock me Amadeus, sigh Cynthetiq: Buffalo Stance, Life in a Northern Town , Jessie’s Girl, oh my GOSH…. Nydawg – WOW, It’s like we grew up together “musically’ LEG’S…. Bankok, All Night Long, et. al. Ahhhh, youth. Freman: COME ON EILEEN , I still love this one. Total Eclipse of the Heart, all the memories…. Jetee: Burning Down the House SSJTWIZTA: SAFETY DANCE!!! Awesome. Thanks for the trip ya’ll, and all the others too, I was so a lover of the original MTV as it seems were all of you. I will definitely be back to this thread again. :) A few more I loved: Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science Survivor – Eye of The Tiger (Our Marching Bands Theme Song) The Police - Roxanne Don't Stand So Close To Me - The Police Hell, anything by The Police, and Tom Petty…. Don’t Come Around Here No More I could go on and on and on…… I sure miss the good moments of my past, but I sure am glad the bad ones are just that, past. |
and I know it's the '70's but really the '80's in spirit: |
It happened one summer, it happened one time
It happened forever, for a short time A place for a moment, an end to dream Forever I loved you, forever it seemed One summer never ends, one summer never began It keeps me standing still, IT takes all my Will And then suddenly last summer Sometimes I never leave, but sometimes I would Sometimes I stay too long, sometimes I would Sometimes it frightens me, sometimes it would Sometimes I'm all alone and wish that I could One summer never ends, one summer never began It keeps me standing still, it takes all my will And then suddenly last summer Sometimes I never leave, but sometimes I would Sometimes I stay too long, sometimes I would Sometimes it frightens me, sometimes it would Sometimes I'm all alone and wish that I could And then suddenly last summer One summer never ends, one summer never began It keeps me standing still, it takes all my will And then suddenly last summer Sometimes I never leave, but sometimes I would Sometimes I stay too long, sometimes I would Sometimes it frightens me, sometimes it would Sometimes I'm all alone and wish that I could And then suddenly last summer Until suddenly last summer And then suddenly last summer Until suddenly last summer... |
This thread is not complete without Dan Hartman
And some Aussie Uncanny X-Men ---------- Post added at 05:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:54 PM ---------- Lastly for today. A live recording of Johnson's Aeroplane by INXS. This is probably my favourite INXS track and it is a shame I couldn't find the studio recording on youtube: and Don't Tear it Down by Spy VS Spy (Aussie 3 piece). I saw these guys live in the early nineties and they were fantastic, though this song is mid-80s: |
this thread is excellent for digging up those tunes that made such a great impact on pop culture with the advent of video. Great thread idea.
Everybody likes Tom Robinson eh? the albums TRB & TRB2 were great. And songs like War Baby & Atmospherics... Well, the following is a cover of Atmospherics, which really directed me back to the Tom Robinson Band to catch the original. It's done by a local Queen St W (Toronto) New Wave band back when the scene was running red hot. They had other tunes like Might As Well be on Mars, and Cherry Beach Express: |

can go past this aussie classic

Gotta love Men at Work. One of the very first videos that I ever saw, but y ou can't think of Men at Work without mentioning
Men Without Hats: |

|
How about Midnight Oil (I'm fairly sure I was at this concert):
Also, this might be more recognisable to non-Aussies: This song gives me chills. My dad is a vietnam vet and I'm just glad he came home in one piece: |
moe berg et als:
Can't write song about girls anymore. Gotta write song about WOMEN. No more boy meets girl, boy loses girl. More like Man tries to understand what the hell went wrong |
