Disaster Songs

What are the greatest all-time disaster songs? You know, songs like Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Teen Angel, New York City Mining Disaster. I'm thinking of compiling a cd of "Head in the Oven Music" and your input would be appreciated...

Definately "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam.
"Elevator" by Boxcar Racer is about a suicide jumper, and someone who watched it happen from the street, I don't know if that really counts.

That Pearl Jam cover of "Last Kiss" is wretched. Awful. Inexcusably bad. Put the original on there.

You sir, are wrong.

Where Did You Sleep Last Night covered by Nirvana would probably be a good one to put on the album as well. Or you could put the original song In The Pines by Ralph Stanley on there.

wow - fun topic! My first thoughts were "Edmund Fitzgerald" and "I Don't Like Mondays" but I'm hitting a wall after those...

hmmm...

Tool's "Aenema" could work... as an impending disaster

Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still."

No, I am right. Eddie Vedder couldn't sound worse if he was being choked with a dying cat.

what about the original?
then again, the original conveys almost no emotion and without the lyrics would sound downright peppy...
but ah well.

Last kiss wasn't originated by Pearl Jam, so I don't think they should get the credit. It was originated by a chick band in the sixties and I wish I could tell you their name. Someone out there HELP! But that's ok, alot of people think that Metallica originated "Whiskey in the Jar" It was actually done by Thin Lizzy in the 70's.

This one is so fucking easy.

Thom Parrott - The Aberfan Coal Tip Tragedy

Find a copy. Listen to it. There's no way in hell to disagree. It's one of the most heartbreaking songs ever written, if not THE most.

I might sound silly but "Spanish Train" by Chris DeBurgh is one of my favorite, just for the word and the idea of having the world lost over a check game.

Kinda depends on your genre of music. Lot's of country disaster songs exist.

Wreck of the Old 97 - Vernon Dalhart, 1924 (1st country song to sell a million records!)
Town Of The Living Dead - Ron Sowell

hmm what about that "Tell Laura I Love Her" song. Depressing.

How about "Big Bad John" by Jimmy Dean? That song always gave me the creeps as a child. The spooky background singers going <i>"Big John... Big John...."</i>
