I've been playing for...14 years now, and I very nearly bought a DW. Then I played a Tama Starclassic. I got that instead. Tama bass drums sound HUGE, and record very well.
The DW's are great drums, don't get me wrong...but the DW didn't sound 3 times better than the Starclassic I wound up getting, and it was 3 times more expensive. If you go to look at Starclassics, IMHO, look at the maple only. I personally dislike the sound of the birch "performer" series. One other nice thing about the Starclassics...since they sound bigger than they are, you can get smaller drums, which is easier on your back. I have a 10", 12", 14", 16" toms with a 20" kick. LOVE IT! MPEDrummer
