Opeth - Watershed

I'm practically shitting my pants in anticipation of their new album release. The stuff I've heard so far is nothing short of awesome.

You can download a track from their upcoming release for free here:

Sounds much different than their other stuff, maybe thats because everyone but Mikael Åkerfeldt and Martin Mendez left the band. I enjoyed the blast beats I heard on the drums, but I felt that they were a little overboard as they continued for too much of the song.

Over all pretty good, lets see how the rest of it is when it comes out.

An astounding 19,000 copies were sold in its first week in stores. Therefore, the verdict is definitely in. Sweden's Opeth have set and raised the bar with their latest album, Watershed.

Watershed debuted at #23 on the Billboard chart, the band's highest ever chart position and the biggest first week sales bow in its career. While the trend in today's climate finds many career bands having smaller initial weeks, Opeth, like their music, buck all trends and do their own thing, continuing to go against the grain, trending upwards and making progress.

Fresh off the hugely successful Progressive Nation Tour with labelmates Dream Theater, Opeth will return to US soil this fall for a headline run, bringing their unique blend of prog, death metal, hard rock and Swedish folk to the masses.
Now that's pretty fucking impressive for a progressive death metal band.

I was just listening to this album on my way to work today. I like it a lot. Not my favorite Opeth album, but definitely a good one.
I saw them at the first show of Progressive Nation 08, and they performed great.

I really loved the songs I have heard on Youtube.
I'm probably going to order it soon. I doubt I'll enjoy it as much as Morningrise (which I think is their crowning achievement), but it could be a second favorite

I have always liked Opeth, though I have to be in a certain mood to listen to it.

So it's actually different?

I like Opeth, I just don't think they're amazing. Amazing is usually reserved for bands who really change while still retaining good quality stuff. I just don't think Opeth changes that much. I won't deny that their mixture of genres was pretty original when they first did it, but it's just been more of the same. But I'm also not amazed by their musicianship. I like their guitar riffs but I'm sometimes bored by the drums.

But Ima check out Watershed because like I said, I like Opeth. They just aren't close to being on my top bands list.

Yeah, they don't seem to change all that much, but there are some differences. It might be just me, but I can hear the jazz influences more on this album.

Im slowly getting into the album, definitely a different sound from them but still with a wide range of sounds and influences that we have come to expect from Opeth.

Saw them a few days ago, and the show was bloody amazing.. surprising only 2 songs from the current album: Heir Apparent and Lotus Eater. But a nice mix from there catalog, heres the set list:

Heir Apparent
Master's Apprentices
The Baying of the Hounds
Serenity Painted Death
To Rid The Disease
The Lotus Eater
Bleak
The Night and the Silent Water
Deliverance
Demon of the Fall
(encore) The Drapery Falls.

Great stuff XD
