You come into Cleveland buy the most famous Rock station in the world WMMS 100.7 FM the home of rock and roll, Home of the Buzzard. The place where a dj as a lark put on Rod Stewart's Maggie May, stated the song would never sell and it became a classic instantly. The first station to play among others, Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell.

You buy them run them into the ground, then to just truly destroy one of Cleveland's most famous trademarks, the reason the Hall of Fame came to Cleveland, the station that made the North Coast Rock...... you change the call letters, get rid of any good DJ and put in bullshit Bob and Tom and other shit syndicated bullshit that we have on 25 other stations in the area and the internet and take the buzzard away??????

You just destroyed the heart of Cleveland, WMMS was Cleveland when there was nothing else there to root for.

Viacom shit canned all the people at the 50s 60s 70s Oldies stations CBS101FM a year or so ago, rebranding it JACKFM which was the ipod shuffle format.

Sucked hard core.

Then JACKFM couldn't sell advertising and they brought everyone back and reformatted it back to Oldies but changed to 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s.

Probably, one thing CC and others do to save costs is where they take stations along the same band like all their 96's become "FOX 96", then they can syndicate the shows and the only noticeable difference between the FOX 96 in say Dallas and the one in say Cleveland are the ads and maybe, maybe they use the AM news team for serious news, severe weather reports etc.

Once upon a time as a teen we listened to the radio because of the DJ's.... then it became "non-stop music and less talk" but you still had some type of DJ now...... now it's all AM if you want some hometown personality to talk and give some insight and even then it's rare.

The only 24 hour station where all the personalities are pretty much live at that station is the great WLW 700 in Cincinatti.... and even then the Truckin Bozo, Burbank, and a few other syndicate their shows but use WLW as their home station.

Pan, I was about to prematurely submit to your wife last night, when she hung up on me to take your call. I think such poor treatment entitles me to a free "patented Pan rant."

My Clear Channel rant is that since the 2006 election results they have been systematically dropping progressive radio talk programs. They are slowly returning, because even CC knows the value of the advertising dollar they were bringing in. It's hard to make a buck with Women's College Volleyball on the radio.

yeah, out here in vancouver, we had an awesome rock station, 104.9 xfm. then suddenly, one christmas, it became all christmas songs. still held out hope, thinking they'd be back after the holidays.

once they allowed mega companies like clear channel, cbs, cumulus, and others but more than one station on both the am and fm dials, this was bound to happen. it's all about the cash. that's why there is so much syndication out there! here in dallas, on the so called "alternative' rock station, there are a total of 4 live djs....it's all syndicated, as is the new/old eagle. it's just radio. i'm glad i got out a couple of years ago. just accept it and move on...nothing can be done because the companies are making a ton of cash. the days of wolfman jack are gone!!! DAMN IT!

CC owns three stations in my area, and I only listen to the one that plays football games. I think I'm too young for this discussion. As long as I've been aware, radio has been crap.

Really, though, It's all about CBC3 or MPR. They're clear channel free by definition.

A few years back, way out in this end of North Carolina, they got some stations and fucked them up real good, too. Now we've got Will FM in Myrtle Beach (SC) and Bob FM in Wilmington...

That being said, I haven't listened to radio for years (save one rock station which has "Drunk Bitch Friday", because that's just funny).

I *do* know that there's a pretty good college station back home, KEPC 89.7 in Colorado Springs. The DJs are painfully bad most days, but the music makes up for it.

Matter of fact, they stream online... I'm off to find them again.

RIP independant radio. Phoenix lost its last independent station about a year ago...funny that they kept the name ("The edge") and just lost the 'independant radio' tag. Quality seems to have gone down hill...they did let them keep some of their cooler shows, though.

The city has struck a deal with one of the largest outdoor advertising companies in Houston that calls for it to dismantle 831 billboards before the end of this year.

The agreement with Clear Channel Outdoor would take effect after the City Council approves it. The proposal is on Wednesday's agenda.

Under the settlement, Clear Channel would remove 831 small and medium-sized billboards from across the city, 51 of them from designated "scenic districts." That represents a two-thirds reduction of all the company's billboards that are less than 288 square feet in size

Many of those billboards were slated to come down by 2013, but some could have remained up permanently because they are located on federal roadways and are beyond the city's legal reach.

In return, Clear Channel would get an extension on 24 large billboards that would have come down between 2009 and 2013. Those will get to stay up 20 more years. The last ones will come down in 2033.

"I think that's worth it," Mayor Bill White said Monday. "It takes down more billboards faster."

Anti-billboard activists said they approved of the deal.

"We were very pleased," said Ed Wulfe, a board member with Scenic Houston. The nonprofit advocates for beautification of streets and public spaces. "For all practical purposes, it will mean no new billboards."

The group had blasted White for offering a "relocation" provision in its previous settlement offer last December. That would have given Clear Channel the right to move 466 medium billboards. That was the same as allowing new billboards to be built, the group contended.

Allows attrition to work
Attorneys for Clear Channel could not be reached Monday.

Wulfe said it was more palatable to extend the lifespan of 24 large billboards than to let 466 billboards move about the city.

"I'm OK with it because it was the trading chip that got, as far as we're concerned, the opportunity to limit relocations to almost nothing, and once and for all," Wulfe said.

Now, billboards can be relocated only if government condemns the property for a road widening or other project, Wulfe said.

Visual blight opponents say that was important because it allows attrition to work on the billboard population: They'll decrease over time from lease expirations, new development, market downturns and weather.

Michael "Mack" Fowler, on the steering committee of the Quality of Life Coalition, said he was pleased with the change.

"I think relocation was a complete and total non-starter," he said. "It was a horrible idea."

The 24 large billboards that would get extensions are scattered about the city. They measure 14 feet by 48 feet. But they represent just 2 percent of all billboards of that size in Houston, said Andy Icken, deputy director of the city's Department of Public Works and Engineering.

The deal accomplishes the city's goal of getting smaller billboards out of residential neighborhoods and scenic districts, Icken said.

"Some would argue the small boards are even more offensive than the large boards, because they're in underserved neighborhoods and advertise liquor and stuff like that," he said.

Wait, the advertisers are the customer? Shit. CC owns three stations in my area, and I only listen to the one that plays football games. I think I'm too young for this discussion. Now we've got Will FM in Myrtle Beach (SC) and Bob FM in Wilmington... FFS, are you buying radio stations, or goddamn puppies? And the commercials?!?! "Bob bought a radio station, so he can play what he wants... which is whatever YOU want." Yeah, bullshit, dude. My iPod smokes yours and is commercial-free, so how 'bout I just listen to mine instead, mmmkay? That being said, I haven't listened to radio for years (save one rock station which has "Drunk Bitch Friday", because that's just funny). I do know that there's a pretty good college station back home, KEPC 89.7 in Colorado Springs. The DJs are painfully bad most days, but the music makes up for it. Phoenix lost its last independent station about a year ago...funny that they kept the name ("The edge") and just lost the 'independant radio' tag. Quality seems to have gone down hill...they did let them keep some of their cooler shows, though. __________________ twisted no more
