I think the people that shred also enjoy the type of practice put into playing in such a way. Back in high school I practiced scales and arpeggios for 5-6 hours a day. In doing so, completely underdeveloped my melodical instinct. I only like shredding when its someone that has a good aural perception and stylish way of approaching the notes. Just playing fast neoclassical fusion might have been OK for a minute back in the 80s, but has become boring.

I like poeple like Marty Friedman and Jason Becker that offermore than just speed. SSJTWIZTA I dont know if you ever considered it, but learning slide (the blues verson-not stand up country music playing like a keyboard version) is fun and produces a cool sound.

A couple of masters: Eric Clapton, Eddie, Yngwie, and Slash redefine a new genre of skill and style.

If you havent heard him Paco De Lucia plays Spanish style and tears it up.

Ok now I know you're yanking my chain. The orchestra is ok, and Yngwie basically barfs shred scale runs all over it.

OK OK, did you listen to any of those videos? They all sound like shit. The truth is a comedian did an excellent dubbing job (the best I have seen ever) and made them all look . . . well judge for yourself) The guy must be a guitarist himself because the different noises he adds line up perfectly with the motions they are doing. In the case of Yngwie he has the choir and orchestra even sounding like shit. The Eirc Clapton one is classic with the keyboard, drums and sax making their noises.

Its one thing to have somene like Yngwie "barf" scales (thats all he seems to do anyway) but the playing is atrocious. Did you really think these guys were playing that bad. Watch them again. They are classic.

Whats really funny is when the guy adds a little hint of a tune in their like they are some oerson just learning and sounding like shit. He has Eddie playing Ironman, Eric playing Enter the Sandman, they videos gave me a good laugh. They are meant as a joke.

On a serious note this is one of my favorite guitarists ever. The news was so sad to me. I can only image where he would have taken his guitar playing. When I first heard him back in the late 80s I would have never thought this would be his fate.

The guy Elliot Fisk (classical guitarist) plays paganini better than anyone Ive heard.

What is interesting here is Paco is keeping up with Al and John picking classically while the other two are flat alternate picking.

Steve Morse another great

Another video from this guy, showing that he is pretty sloppy and his tone can't cover all of it up.

Two of the best, glad to hear someone mention them!

Quite possibly the best modern shredder, Michael Romeo of Symphony X.
He has great style, great technical proficiency, and he can write great songs too.
