not my kind of music but I did listen to the whole thing...

sounded good.

Plan9 01-12-2008 11:32 AM

I like this. Good job, bro.

I wanna rub it on my smooth spot.

Also: It's funny you used Will's name in the thread title and he somehow hasn't seen it... or at least commented.

Willravel 01-12-2008 12:03 PM

In My Mind - WHOA! The drums/fx are all over the place, and it really works. It's an innovative way to break up monotony (and trance can often be somewhat monotonous).
James Dean Cool - I'll admit that this song didn't remind me of James Dean, but at 13:53 it really hit a good stride. I almost found myself wising it had less percussion (though that's where my tastes in trance lie: I love trance that's really melodic and lighter on percussion).
Should Have Known- Is that you singing? Just kidding. At 20:30 this thing changes pace and I really think the crescendo was perfect. So often in electronica the crescendo is misused, and I wish more people would use it more like you did. It takes patience and an already well developed melody along with something that's a lot different preceding it. I have to admit that I loved the transition at the end of this piece.
We Wise - I like this one a lot. It's thick in the beginning, like trance gravy, and then it gets REALLY melodic with the use of electronic orchestration. Creating a contrast like that really gives the piece a good flavor, like when you combine sweet and savory in cooking. Why all the food references? I'm hungry.
Beautide - This seems more like traditional house/trance. I also think it's the best piece in the mix because it's well developed and has all around quality. You still remind me, stylistically, of Gabriel and Dresden. If you ever get the opportunity, you should work with them on a mix. I had a friend introduce us a few years ago when the "Perfect Lie" mix they had was really big and they really know their shit. If they thought my stuff was promising, they'd love yours.
Dark Side of the Moon - I dunno about the guitar in this one. Maybe I'm just a purest, but somehow guitar and trance are a tough combination.

All around great mix. Throw in something else, and you'd have a great album.

Hain 01-12-2008 12:37 PM

The perfect lie is amazing in my opinion. I can listen to that and really just feel terrible temptation in that voice. Perfectly used in Nip/Tuck (an OK soundtrack, starts off GREAT but then becomes... nothing of interest).

I bet you have heard their chillout mix of As the Rush Comes by Motorcycle- greatest song ever. If I recall correctly, Motorcycle was a collaboration between Gabriel, Dresden, and Jes. Jes is by far one of my favorite female vocalists for trance music. Fell in love with that voice from Tiesto's In Search of Sunrise vol 3. ...

Ah the music.

And I still think you should join artist server, if you can with mixes of other artists songs. Damn good stuff.

Shauk 01-12-2008 12:53 PM

I'm glad you guys like it, thanks for the comments :)

i feel like a challenge so if you guys have some particular tracks you want to hear mixed up, let me know :)

fair warning, i'm slow

I am a pretty big fan of G&D and I actually have "as the rush comes" on vinyl by Motorcycle (which is just G&D with a vocalist)

I like the chunk in my basslines.

so do you have something to generate that? I know it comes in handy for burning cd's and so on but I've never made one, I usually just had to edit the track number/time index myself in nero or whatever.

Hain 01-12-2008 02:10 PM

I did it by hand because I wasn't feeling like an engineer: spend three times the time it would normally take learning a clever way of doing it so I don't have to do as much work next time.

Some applications I know have these features, again I don't know how to work them, FooBar2000 (requires 3rd party plugins), CUE Tools... plenty more at Hydrogen Audio.

Shauk 01-12-2008 05:36 PM

will I just wanted to revist and thank you for your attention to detail in your review. It's refreshing to get a track by track analysis from a detail oriented listener. Nothing like an in depth review into your track selection to make you realize what makes good things good and bad things bad. :) I thank you for your effort.

Willravel 01-12-2008 05:41 PM

Not a problem. I don't get to do this with Tiesto or Oakenfold, so it's a treat.

Curious, by "your stuff" what did you mean? a mix? or original composition?

I still haven't heard anything from you so I just twiddle my thumbs and can't even imagine what to compare myself to stylistically in that regard.

Original stuff. I had Logic on my iMac back in 2000-2001, and 30 GB of music was deleted when my dad took my computer and sold it while I was visiting friends out of town. I managed to save maybe 3 pieces, and one of those was on the disc I had with me when I was in San Francisco.

My style is melodic, orchestral trance with elements of jazz and romantic period music. Think DJ Sasha meets someone who thinks that he's a classical composer.

Shauk 01-12-2008 07:47 PM

ach, yeah my original pieces aren't nearly as polished as what I put together in mixes. I tried messing around with Sonar, which is supposedly the PC equivalent of Logic.
I seriously have never felt so lost in my life.

Edit: I am trying out messing around with cubase now. again, I feel lost.

seems like if I can make heads or tails of reason (which btw... they just patched to 4.01 to support my midi controller) I'd be able to use anything but that's not the case.

Shauk 01-25-2008 01:22 PM

I hax.

but nah I haven't made any cue sheets anyway so.. Although, I'm thinking it may be time to re-do this mix and extend it a bit to a full 60-70 minutes and make a batch of professional looking cd's to hand out at work or something :p I feel like using as a fun lil social gig. Probably going to wait until May or so. I'm still working on a website 1st

Jadedfox 01-28-2008 04:33 AM

I love Pole Folder so any mix including a track by them is worth listening to!

I'd be cautious "handing-out" CDs with the songs you have on there. I haven't kept up with the laws of distribution, but some artists and lawyers of artists are real sticklers against people handing out their media, even if it is remixed into a new songs.

Still, if you happen to find stuff on it, I'd welcome getting back in the know.

Shauk 01-28-2008 08:39 AM

huh, I don't really know what the legality of mix cd's are, but that tempts me to just avoid listing the track names entirely. The average Joe wouldn't know up from down if I just handed them a completley free unlabeled stream of music I mixed together. :p

but... yeah...

who does know the legality of this? Like I know if I go and play in a club, they are already paying like a general licensing fee just to be able to play music (and thats why you pay a cover) so you're covered by that as a DJ. I just don't know where the variables "mixed" and "free" and "promotional showcase of one's technical skill" enter when figuring out this law :p

vanblah 01-28-2008 10:36 AM

It is illegal to distribute any copyrighted material without the express written permission of the copyright holder(s). Sometimes, especially in the case of electronic or dance music, permission may be implied--but not always. Check the original CD or record for the fine print. You have to keep in mind that a lot of times the artist is not actually the copyright holder; so he or she may be totally cool with you using their stuff on your mixCD; but the publisher may not be happy with it at all. It's an unnecessarily complex waste of paperwork, but that's the way it is.

Even if it's a "demo" of your skills as a DJ it is still illegal unless otherwise stated by the original copyright holder.

Still, you're pretty much small potatoes in the grand scheme of things and since you're handing them out for free it's not like they'd do much but send a stern cease-and-desist. You can't get blood from a turnip.

Shauk 01-28-2008 03:22 PM

hey, i resemble that remark :p

but yeah these are tracks I purchased from beatport.com, they supply directly from the labels (and thus have the zone restrictions on some releases, like there is a new ferry corsten track that is only out in the UK now but on beatport and they wont let me add it to my cart, so I cannot purchase it which actually cost them money cuz I downloaded it anyway from an alternative source) >:( I think the laws and practices of labels only serves to screw them over in the new "age" of music distrubution.

I dunno, I'll probably go ahead with doing what I plan on doing.

n0nsensical 01-28-2008 11:37 PM

Yeah it's "technically" illegal, but distributing free promo mixes is standard practice in the dance music industry. (not the kind of industry to be in if you're overly concerned with laws ) I wouldn't worry about it if you're not selling anything. These labels don't go around suing everybody. They're probably just happy for the publicity, and only the majors have the kind of cash to burn on lawyers anyway.

Shauk 01-29-2008 06:28 AM

yeah good point. These guys aren't exactly buddies with the RIAA, most of them are probably UK based anyway

n0nsensical 02-02-2008 04:55 PM

btw that Cosmic Gate track is really sick (love the addl work by Wippenberg). They are pretty much my favorite producers these days, though, for some reason I don't care much for their DJ sets Ive seen. They've just been hit machines for years, Exploration of Space, Analog Feel, Body of Conflict, lots of great remixes too.

I'm glad you did, the mix = awesome.

Now, if i can just get rid of the urge to go out and buy a few grams of MDMA and a duvet i'll be sorted.
