Oscar Peterson 1925-2007, RIP

For those who haven't yet heard, after a long illness Oscar Peterson passed away Sunday. He was 82 years old.

I don't really know what to say. The world has lost one of the greats; Peterson influenced many contemporary pianists, including Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock.

He will be missed.

I am not a big jazz fan but I have listened to Oscar Peterson and always enjoyed his music. From what I've read about him, he really was a charmingly nice guy and, as Martian points out, one of the greats.

I read about his death online and then in a local paper... Amazingly the obit in the local paper ran a picture of BB King instead of Peterson. I guess all large, black musicians look alike.

His torch will be carried, and it will be passed on.

Rest peacefully, Mr. Peterson.

Charlatan, that's just shameful. I suppose they get points for trying.

I was fortunate enough to have seen him perform at a jazz festival when he was in his sixties. Class act is right.

a really great pianist, the finest in the general style art tatum pioneered, who worked at an amazing level of countrapunctual invention (within a tightly circumscribed form no less) in his playing. i was never a particular fan of his style (i like folk who are more raggedy, like sun ra or jaki byard in their approach to oldschool materials).......but his playing: damn...

rip sir.
