OK, I will probably not be able to ever answer any of these questions (some fo them are real killers) so this may be my only chance.

What is the claim to fame of the Dire Straits album Brothers in Arms?

Sting did backing vocals on Money for Nothing. Same song had what may well have been the first computer animated video.

The title cut was featured in the West Wing.

Well, those are both right, but Google tells me that's not what you're looking for. So somebody else.

Tully Mars. It was the first album fully recorded digitally.
There are also a couple of other distinctions that go along with that, can you get them?

Wasn't it the first CD? Other then that I'd have to google it.

I know "Money for Nothing" was one of if not the most played video on MTV for a a long time.

Ha! Finally kickstarted my memory. Brothers In Arms wasn't the first cd, but (propelled largely by the success of Money For Nothing) it was the first cd to outsell it's lp equivalent. I think it broke a sales record too, but I'm not sure which. 100 000? 500 000? 1 000 000? One of those.

If I'm right, I bequeath the question to Tully Mars, who priovided the mental jolt necessary to bring all this crap to the surface anyway.

Martian is correct. It was the first album to outsell its LP equivalent.
It was also the first album to sell 1,000,000 in CD format.

Martian says Tully Mars goes next.

Alright.

Yngwie Malmsteen modifies his guitars in a particular way that makes it difficult or impossible for anyone other than him to play them. He claims that these modifications give him greater control over the sound and pitch of the instrument.

What does he do?

I have no idea, but I'll take a stab in the dark here.

I'm gonna guess he puts the strings on out of the standard EBGDAE order.

Nope.

Rules say that questions stay up for 24 hours. Since nobody seems to know, I'll give up the answer.

Yngwie scallops his fretboard. Thus, when he pushes down on a sting he doesn't push it all the way down to the wood. If a player used to a regular guitar tried to play on one of his, they would find it very difficult to play in tune.

'Nother question, this one in honour of the late, great Jeff Healey.

Mr. Healey was known for a distinctive technique of his own that he used when playing guitar. What was it? Bonus points if you can tell me why he played that way.

I've only ever seen Jeff Healy in videos and I don't know much about the guy. He plays his guitar with it laying in his lap and he doesn't hold the frets, he runs his hand across the board (if that makes any sense).

As fas as why he plays that way, I don't know for sure but I'll take yet another stab in the dark and guess that he's blind, and that ways easier for him.

He was blind, but what I heard is that he played that way because when he started on guitar he was so young that his arms were too short to do it the normal way. You're right about his technique, though. It was truly one of a kind.

Your question.

Crazy, even him being blind was a guess. Heh.

My question:

There are two bands that are believed to be side projects of Green Day. Billy Joe disclaims any involvement with one, and the other is a fairly new band and it is unconfirmed as to whether it is them or not, but the similarities are almost undeniable.

Name either of these bands. Bonus if you name both.

I know the new project (free online downloads ftw!), but I'm not going to post it yet, since I think it would be cool if this game was more than just me and Punk.of.Ages..

I will say that even though the band haven't actually claimed it per se, it's pretty frickin' obvious. A little bit of reverb doesn't mask Billy Joe's voice all that well. If they'd put Mike on vocals they may have been able to pass it off as something new (assuming they actually wanted to).

Yeah, I think we're the only music heads on right now Martian.

Yeah, there's no way it's not Green Day in the case of either band. The one they disclaim was a new wave band though. I'd disclaim a horrible decision like that too.

I actually really enjoy the new side project, though.

Yeah, it's pretty rockin'. It's like a whole 'return to your roots' type of deal, with none of the political crap that went along with American Idiot. Just good, solid garage rock.

I was not aware that Green Day had a new wave project. This may be because I generally avoid new wave on principle.

I wonder if they'll try to disown the new one too?

Yeah, you can only sing so many songs about hating Bush (yeah a punk rocker said it.)

The new stuff has a real whimsical, fun loving, poppy feel to it that is enjoyable. I hope they don't disclaim it later, it's definitely something to be owned.

I've decided that I'm going to answer this one, because I want to start a thread.

The new side project that is probably Green Day even though they haven't come right out and said so is the Foxboro Hot Tubs. Their big hit so far has been Mother Mary, but depending on how much longer Green Day can maintain plausible deniability, I would suspect that there's a few more to come.

Next question is a toss-up. Come on, folks, join in the fun!

I'm on the road for a bunch of the next few days, so I may not be able to be back to confirm this. I'll make it easy, and if you're sure of the answer, just go ahead and ask the next question.

Who wrote Patsy Cline's hit "Crazy"?

Dude, Tom Petty is like 50. He's at least as old as MJ, probably older. If it's not Elvis I'd have to go with Bob Dylan, but I still don't think that quite matches up.

Not Jesus is correct. He met him later at party in the Hollywood hills, but only after turning Black Sabbath on 78.

Elvis is correct your move Martian.

Before being known as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Fogerty et al went by two other names. Name one, or both for bonus points.

The names in question are the Golliwogs (which I personally think is a great name) and Tommy and the Blue Velvets.

Different question? How about this one?

Who did Dimebag Darrell cite as his hero and biggest influence?
