Ideas for roadtrip music??
At the end of this week, I'm going to be going on an 18 hour bus trip and I want to revamp my ipod before I leave.
I'm going to ideally look for a mixture of classic rock, mellow music (think Annie Lennox "Into the West", Imogen Heap, etc), and latest and greatest (chart toppers, etc). My musical tastes run all over the board, though I tend to stray from heavy metal and hard core hip hop. Lately I've been listening to The Ramones, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, KT Tunstall, Imogen Heap, The Killers, The Postal Service, Snow Patrol, Amy Winehouse, Cowboy Junkies, and the lastest Top 40 - just to name a few... Any ideas at all are extremely welcome! |
The Tragically Hip--especially Road Apples.

If only because I have grown quite fond of it in the last few days: Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
The exceptional detail, length, and imagery of the lyrics allows you to just sit back and enjoy 9 stories set to smooth strummings of the guitar. |
Here's an important question - where are you going, and from where are you departing?
|
Probably heavier than what you're looking for, but I love driving fast to this song.
Alice in Chains - Them Bones |

once i know, i'll let you know my best pics for music. |
If you like classic rock and top 40, you owe it to yourself to check out Q-Unit! One of my favorite driving Cd's, and it's free and legally available! It's Queen songs mixed with the G-Unit album by 50 Cent.
Mirror here: http://www.coletrain.org/qunit/ Deeelightful. Oh yeah, and all of the Weird Al Polka's. |
I'm not going anywhere too exciting - just travelling from vancouver to Calgary on the bus - so its just me and my ipod. I imagine the mood will be all over the place....
|
Podcasts. I find it easier to stay awake listening to people talk, rather than music. Try Sex is Fun, Radio Blowfish, Open Source Sex. And This American Life.
|
I've really taken a liking to Bob Dylan's Love and Theft while driving.
and, lately, Guero by Beck. |
Foghat - Slow Ride
Edgar Winter - Free Ride Fox On The Run - Sweet Tuesday's Gone - Lynyrd Skynyrd Highway Star - Deep Purple Led Zepplein - No Quarter Led Zeppelin - Dazed and Confused Alice Cooper - No More Mr Nice Guy Boston - More Than A Feeling Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son Heart - Crazy on You ZZ Top - Sharp Dressed Man Dr. John - Right Place Wrong Time Aerosmith - Sweet Emotions Allman Brothers Band - Ramblin' Man Allman Brothers Band - Jessica just an example of what i would put. from a recent cd I made last month. also, if you like, try some CCR. and possibly some super chill ambient music for when you want to sleep or just relax. |
i was always a fan of V.A.S.T. album Nude and their self titled album.
|
Travis's album "The Man Who" is my all-time favorite road trip music. It starts off with "Writing to Reach You", which has this very shuffly rhythm to it that matches perfectly with wheels turning. If someone else is doing the driving, I listen to this and let my mind wander. I also really love Crowded House's greatest hits album, "Recurring Dream", and Neil Finn's album "One All". Kind of quiet but with some upbeat tunes when you need them.
If I'm driving, I like to listen to Muse's "Absolution". It has a bunch of great driving songs, like "Stockholm Syndrome". |
The new Circa Survive album gets a lot of listening to when I'm driving at night or early in the morning.
|
Pearl Jam - vs.
Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever Those are the two that immediately come to mind. |
Check out David Lee Roth's 'Skyscraper' - Awesome
and Aerosmiths 'Big Ones' is a particular favourite of mine also. Have a nice trip. |
Roadtrips require the 70s, 80s and 90s.
Deee-lite - Groove is in the Heart George Michael - Monkey, Faith, and Freedom Smith - Baby, It's You radiohead - Subterranian Homesick Alien, Kill the President, Karma Police and optimistic Wham! - Everything She Wants Michael Jackson - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough Beasties - Brass Monkey (oooh and To the Five Boroughs is awesome!) Bjork - Unravel and Violently Happy Cake - Shut the Fuck Up, Short Skirt, Long Jacket, Love You Madly, and Comfort Eagle Divo - Whip It Men without Hats - Safety Dance Blondie - Heart of Glass Duran Duran - Reflex, Rio and Wild Boys I always toss in some Self, Gorillaz, Grand Masta Flash :D, Slipknot, Johnny Cash, Keller Williams, G.Love, Marvin Gaye or Barry White, Sex Pistols, Beethoven, Lily Allen, Massive Attack, Okkervil River, Phish, Radiohead and old U2 to mix it up. And there is no road trip complete without the 12 minute live version of Eric Johnson's Cliffs of Dover. All this keeps me from falling asleep. I have ADD. Go figure? |
So, fredweena, where we headed? :)
Dibs shotgun! Great list. |
I drive a lot for work doing home visits. When I'm not doing books on CD, I have to listen to music to keep from jumping out of the car and bustin' a cap in the q-tips.
You should hear my cardio mix for the gym. I entertain myself. Good luck on your road trip, randy! |
fredweena - I'd be very interested in hearing your cardio mix for the gym! - I'm always looking for new music to listen to while working out :)

Justice makes good workout music :D
podcasts are a pretty good idea, i recommend the soul and gospel shows on wfmu Black Devil - Disco Club is very cool. in spite of the name, it's actually rather subdued -- http://www.discogs.com/release/307518 if you like classic rock, you may enjoy Brian Eno's albums from around 1973 - 75 if you like Amy Winehouse, check out her producer Mark Ronson Boards of Canada are good for relaxing |
just before you're about to pass out on that road trip, put on something by Sigur Ros.
|
A sound recording of a previous road trip.
Cassette side A: Inside the car. (Highlights: randygirl farting, windsheild wiper activation, adjusting the airconditioner to just the right force.) Cassette side B: Outside the car. (Highlights: woooshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh) |
um, wtf??
|

Of course, there is no accounting for taste....mine included. :) Personally, I'm with Redlemon. I think podcasts are the way to go; that or sleeping. I can't imagine being awake for 18 hours on a road trip, especially if I'm not driving. I'd give out suggestions, but my tastes trend towards the geeky; tech-shows and classroom lectures, which isn't most folks' cup o' tea, I'm told. |
How was Steppenwolf - Born To be Wild not mentioned???
That's the ultimate driving song. Windows open, stereo blasting. Also, Pink Floyd - Money Stevie Ray Vaughan - Tin Pan Alley (for a more settled down, bluesy-cool mood) SRV - Cold Shot SRV - Riviera Paradise The Stones - paint it black (and Marie Laforet's cover is cool too) Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon is an amazing album for driving. The whole thing is a musical trip in itself. :) The Gorillaz have some great songs. November has Come with MF DOOM comes to mind. A relaxed, bluesy song. |
AC/DC. Period.
