Neko Case
The first time I ever heard this woman's voice was when a friend introduced me to The New Pornographers many years ago. Although I didn't mind it, I was more captulated by A.C. Newman's musical genius.
When I moved down to Melbourne, Australia, I managed to score a really sweet job with an online company, one of the guys there had very similar tastes in music and introduced me to Neko Case's solo work. This women has the voice of a Goddess. She's the first musician I've ever come across where I couldn't care less about what she sings, just that she sings it. Her voice is just amazing. And, for what it's worth, the music she sings is pretty damn good too. Can't get enough of her. P.S. She's also a red head which wins so many extra bonus points in my book it isn't funny!

To me, much of her appeal is her style. But, yes, her voice is the clincher: I too was enraptured by it.
...and I know what you're talking about... the red hair thing.

You absolutely need to hear her live. Or a live broadcast even *cough*KCRW*cough*
Or just get The Tigers Have Spoken album (live) You will be amazed at how good she sounds when in concert. I saw her as the opening act for Willie Nelson when he last visited the Hollywood Bowl. The only reasons I was there was to see Neko live, and to see a Legend at work while I still have the chance even though I'm not a fan.

I heart Neko.
Seeing her in concert literally gave me a visual and auditory orgasm. Her voice is nothing like all the tween poppers that are so popular now, plus has this amazing energy in her that exudes from the stage to the audience in concerts that just makes you swoon. She is amazing. |

Today is Neko Case Day! Her first new album out since I've started listening to her. Her entire album was streaming on NPR's site and on MSpace for the past couple weeks, and it was released on iTunes last night at midnight, but I'm holding out from listening to it until I buy it from the local record shop a couple miles from my house. I want the first time to be on headphones, in cd quality... not through the laptop in compressed streaming form. Her music demands no less than that, heh.

I've only heard a bit of her and I've always been dying to get more, but at the same time she always escapes my thoughts when I go to buy new music. I am under the impression that I will be completely and totally in love with this woman sooner or later, you know, whenever I get around to it.

If you like Neko Case's voice you should check out Amy Milan. She sings with Stars but also has solo work.
She has the voice of an angel.

her voice is amazing, and the lyrics are so evocative & usually dark: i love the line in "margaret vs. pauline" about a rivalry between 2 girls & how some people just seem cursed & some charmed......
two girls ride the blue line two girls walk down the same street one left her sweater sittin on the train and the other lost 3 fingers at the cannery
