I brought home my new guitar today!!

Alpine white Gibson Les Paul Studio. Plays pretty great, just needs a set-up. Lists for $1199 with case but I got it for $799, no case. Bought a used SBK case for it instead for $50.

Beats the shit out of my Epi. :woot:

Here's the MF blurb on it:

Quote:
The arrival of the Gibson Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar in 1983 offered guitarists all the essential elements of a Les Paul Standard, including a carved top and humbucking pickups. Its simple yet elegant design quickly helped it become the most popular model in the Les Paul Series. Cutting-yet-rich tone- the hallmark of the LP- pours out of the 490R and 498T alnico magnet humbucker pickups, which are mounted on a carved maple top with a mahogany back. Rosewood fretboard with trapezoid inlays makes for great looks while dual volume and tone controls provide complete command of your sound.

Gibson Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar Features:

Carved maple top and mahogany back
Mahogany neck, '59 Rounded Les Paul
Rosewood fingerboard
Tune-o-matic bridge with stopbar
Chrome or gold hardware
490R and 498T alnico magnet humbucker pickups
2 volume and 2 tone knobs, 3-way switch

That's about the classiest thing I've ever seen. Also, $800 is a steal! I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy my Roland.

Sounds great!! I'm playing it through a Crate tube amp, using the Pod XT as a pre-amp for effects. I'm loving it!!

i'm sure that les does beat the shit out your old epiphone...or at least it should. you getting it set up, or do you do all that yourself - or finding it doesn't need it? i concur; that's a perty guitar.

Nice, Pauls generally are great. I'm glad you got a good deal on it as Gibsons are typically very overpriced. I know because I've been playing Gibsons for the last 10 years haha.

Get a nice wide guitar strap to save yourself some trouble from "Les Paul" shoulder and you'll be set for life.

Haha, I am having a strap custom made for me. Bright white reinforced kid leather, decorated with gold and rhinestones, with black ends.

pigglet, I am not skilled as a luthier, so I am outsourcing the set-up. I'll drive it down to El Cajon today or tomorrow. The guy is pretty backlogged so it may be 2 weeks before i get it back.

that sucks. Doing set ups is not very difficult it just takes someone to show you how to do it and help guide you through it yourself. I used to be paranoid about doing anything with my guitars but now I only take it to a Techie when I want a really really top notch job or there is a major problem. I was lucky in that my tech back home offered to show me how to do it for free when I brought my main axe in and since then have brought it in once a year for a good professional overhaul. I keep her running, he gives her a tune up

Most "out of the box" guitars only really need action and intonation done for them, especially if you dislike whatever low-quality thin guage strings that came with it. For example I use such a heavy guage now that I don't even try out guitars in stores anymore because I just can't play on 10s or 9s at all and if I did purchase a guitar from a store then I would have to do a good deal of work with the trust rod, action, intonation, pickups etc etc. However the vast vast majority of people how play Electric play with 10s and not the phone wires I use hahaha

Just got back from getting it set up... the intonation problems went away for the most part once the bridge was lowered a bit. It was set higher than they usually are from the factory. Weird. After that, just a couple of string intonation tweaks and she was good to go.

Now I have to name her. Any ideas?

I dunno, every guitar I've owned got its name by the first name that came to my head when I first owned it.

God i've been through a lot of names. Yeesh. Stupid guitars, always wanting more!!

(looks at collection and things he could pay off a lot of debt)

i need a new one soon; but my first priority is getting a new banjo. its a great feeling getting that new guitar; but honestly there's no guitar i'd rather play than my big old gibson. after so much time; its just my guitar, no matter what else i pick up.

but that les is beautiful diva; i hope you get a lot of enjoyable time out of her.

as an aside, if you give gender specific pronouns to your instruments, do you typically cross gender as most guys do and imagine its a guy or do you stick with the feminine?

All instruments are girls.

My Taylor's name is Evie.

I called my Epi Jane... she was plain and a little wrecked.

It took me a month and a half to name Evie. Maybe the Gibson will tell me her name in time.

i've recently overhauled my telecaster for fun and have been playing it for the last few days. It's a fast neck, faster then my main Gibson and it has a very nice sound. Unfortunately the poor guy doesn't have that 'sound' that I get with my main axe. However it's easiler to play fast passages on it because she only has .11s on it compared to the .13s on my gig axe. It should make some of these lines I have to learn easier to pull off

And I second don't get rid of your old instruments. My teacher told me he was at a guit show in dallas and he has a guitar that would go for probably 30k easily despite getting it for 800 bucks back in the 60's.

I had a friend who bought a deep red colored Les Paul Studio when he was in the Air Force and had spare money. After he got out he pawned it for weed money. Possibly the worst decision I've ever heard of anyone ever making that didn't involve jail time.

That's a beautiful machine you've got there and I hope you have many long years of annoying neighbors with it.

She has a name!!!!

I picked her up to play her with my band at rehearsal for the first time last night.... and a sweet, light, silvery voice whispered in my head "Bianca."

Her name is Bianca.

I have to be totally honest on this one - I opened this thread, saw the ax and thought something very unflattering about divagrrrl. I'm massively jealous.

I'll just go jam on my Silvertone some more, thanks.

EDIT for this :

Damn straight they are. Billy Joe can have his Floyd, but my guitar is definately a Sofie, thanks.
