DOCUMENTARY FILM

Can you post your best documentary film from the artists you loved?
Or, Who are the late artists you want to have a documentary film about their lifes.

Let me start this thread:

I like the story of the late Elvis Presley :) no doubt about it..

I'm looking forward for the documentary film of the true to life story of Joe Strummer.

How about yours!

My two favorite REAL documentaries:

"Let's Get Lost" about Chet Baker by Bruce Weber

"Don't Look Back" about Bob Dylan by D.A. Pennebaker

These two are not technically documentaries, but they're close enough to be included in this thread:

"Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus"
about music in the deep south by Andrew Douglas.

"American Splendor"
about Harvey Pekar by Shari Springer Berman; although not a musician Pekar is a Jazz afficionado.

X: The Unheard Music...a great documentary about the seminal LA punk band X.
The Masters of American Music documentary on Louis Armstrong, entitled Satchmo.
Let It Be, directed by Michael Lindsey-Hogg...on The Beatles, of course.
The Beatles Anthology, 5-disc set...awesome! Would love to own it one day.
Ken Burns's Jazz: The Story of American Music...another 5-disc set I'd love to own.
The Decline of Western Civilization by Penelope Spheeris...about the LA punk scene.
The American Masters documentary about Hank Williams, entitled Honkytonk Blues.
No Direction Home by Martin Scorsese and (like vanblah) Don't Look Back by DA Pennebaker both on one of my favorite all-time subjects, Bob Dylan.
High Lonesome: The Story of Bluegrass Music...or something like that...not sure who directed it, but it is an excellently crafted documentary.

well first off there's this bbc television series that derek bailey put together on improvisation. its available online from ubu:

is great fun...

the devil and daniel johnson---while fanboys shouldn't make docs about those they more-than-admire, this film is still cool....

we jam econo--on that most excellent band the minutemen
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0446071/

pennebaker has made a number of fine films about music:

monterey pop (this is still my favorite of the rockdoc genre, mostly for the last half hour, which features an amazing raga played by ravi shankar and a tabla player of a highly refined level of excellence)

ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars. lovely lovely.

there's another dylan documentary too--i saw segments at a conference he was at last fall----check here:

more generally:

I only watched the Don't Look Back 1967 Documentary covering Bob Dylan's 1965 tour of England, which includes appearances by Joan Baez and Donovan
I am so glad of that documentary film because it won the award the "National Film Registry".

Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten is a dialogue-free. It has the floating camera of Joe Strummer's life just like Don't Look Back. And this documentary film has nominated for Grand Jury Prize.

I'm looking forward of this film.

Another State of Mind.

Its a documentary that follows Social Distortion, Youth Brigade, A Minor Threat and a few other punk bands while on tour. Its when they're first starting out so its pretty neat to watch how they get to shows. Sneaking in to play their own shows to avoid confrontation and such.

Of all the music docs I've seen, this one was the most moving......."The Teens Who Stole Pop Music" http://www.thebiographychannel.co.uk..._Pop_Music.htm

It's about the young writers of the Brill Building, churning out all the great early sixties pop hits. Total time travel..... another time, another place.

The TRex (Marc Bolan) documentary I saw on the Documentary Channel really sucked  ......it could have been so good!

^_^

"The Teens Who Stole Pop Music" that was narrated by John Turturro.
Yep, this music docs could be one of the most moving.

Lizra, so you like watching documentary films about music right?
You might get interest of Joe Strummer:The Future is Unwritten
a documentary film that rocks :). You'll be surprise if you see
Bono of U2 and Johnny Depp playing themselves in this film.

Are you curious about it? :)
