Greatest Covers Never Made
Driving to work today, Spandau Ballet's "True" came on, and I had a sudden epiphany, or at least the inklings of one. For some reason, it occured to me that that particular song would have been great covered by David Bowie. Well, maybe not early-ish Bowie so much, but you get the idea. I've also been impressed at the song "Woman" from Wolfmother. The first time I heard that I was confused as I could have sworn I was listening to a lost, early Zeppelin track.
However, I'm sure there are tons of great matchups of songs to artists that never were and may never be. So post your own opinions. Which songs happened to the wrong artist at the wrong time? Who should have performed it? What great songs deserve which great musicians? What bad or mediocre songs would be good or great with a different performer? What songs sound more like another artist than their own? This is pure speculation so there are no right or wrong answers of course, though some sort of rationale or explanation behind the choice would be interesting. Here are my initial "fantasy" picks: 1. Led Zeppelin - "Woman" (actually by Wolfmother) (sounds like) 2. David Bowie - "True" (actually by Spandau Ballet) (would have been an interesting rendition) 3. Sublime - "D'Yer Mak'er" (actually by Led Zeppelin) (would have been a great and appropriate cover) Oh, and if any of these happen to actually exist, please do tell me.
